I do believe global warming is a natural cycle of the world, and didn't just start to happen because of us.....

I do my part for the enviroment, we recycle among other things

and too a point it is a hippie mind set

Do you believe in Global Warming? Yes. Why or why not? This shouldn't even be a question. It goes along with common sense.
Do you do anything to help save our enviornment? Yes. Although I know I really should try harder. Why or why not? Again, common sense. I did even before the whole "green movement" hit the US.
Do you think saving our enviornment is just a hippie mindset? It shouldn't be. But if someone thinks it is then hand me my peace sign shirt and shackle me to a tree. Thanks.

Ditto. Even with the argument that global warming doesn't exist -- why wouldn't you want to make the earth cleaner, more energy efficient, etc? It kind of flies in the face of rational thought.

Yes, I believe in global warming. I do what I can for the environment (the 3 R's). I think that caring for our environment is more than a hippie mindset, its something critical that needs to be done now.

Do you believe in Global Warming? Why or why not?
I don't believe in global warming anymore than I do in the global cooling pattern predicted in the 70's. I DO believe in natural climate patterns, and I can't wait for the scientists to figure out which one we're in. I think we do have "footprints", and I do think that, although we can not affect the climate change so much on our globe, we CAN make ourselves sick with waste and pollution. We can also deplete our natural resources, and so we should come up with alternatives.

Do you do anything to help save our enviornment? Why or why not?

I recycle b/c I think our landfills are finite. We used public transit IRL before hubby deployed b/c I think that our natural resources are finite.... I also want to reduce oil dependency.

Do you think saving our enviornment is just a hippie mindset? why or why not?

No. I'm a Christian, and I understand that why we are stewards of this earth for as long as we inhabit it. I do think that some activist groups go a little overboard with it, and their meddling in turn disrupts the natural ecosystem sometimes....

yes, but I believe it's been happening for a long time now, thanks to the agricultural revolution and the death of Malthusian Checks.

I have been on the go-green bandwagon for a bit. Organic tees, buying recycled notebooks, using environmentally house cleaners & shampoos.

No, I think we should take responsibility for our environment. We need to take care of our living spaces.

i dont believe in the rapid state of global warming. such as seasonal changes are so dramatic from region to region- when we're suppose to be in a cooling period- that doesnt justify that global warming is being accelerated as some portray. the 2006 winter was one of the coldest ones on records, the more moisture we get helps recycle the water that helps keep the global temperature in control.
also most of the data is taken from highly industrialized mid- latitude areas & not all areas of the world.
the ice pack- the only time they really pronounce upon it is during the thaw season, but theres still the replenishment of it during the winter season... as long as the Hudson Bay and Baffin Bay freeze over every year, theres really no reason to be concerned. JMO

Except the ice forms later on the pole then it has in years past which greatly effects that eco system from the polar bears on down. I watched the wonderful docu that followed a polar bear and a walrus from birth it was very good, it covers the issue about the ice pack forming later and thawing sooner. Another good one is march of the penguins.

I don't consider it to be a belief, to me is something factual, but even if global warming was a myth, why not take take care of out planet? It's the only one we have.

Do you do anything to help save our environment? Why or why not?
I recycle, and try my best to lower my carbon footprint

Do you think saving our environment is just a hippie mindset? why or why not?

No, but I think we like to put "labels" on everything, usually when the word hippie is used it's meant in a condescending "look at that wacko" kind of way.

Personally I think it should be human mindset, as I said before, we only have one planet, how bad can it be to just take good care of it.

Everything we do affects the world we live in, not just humans, but plant life and animal life and ever the air with breathe in. If wanting to preserve those things, making sure that my future grandchildren get a chance to see a real whale or not go to bed hungry because out food supply is diminished. If that makes me a tree hugging hippie, I am ok with that.

I believe global warming is part of a natural climate pattern. I believe that the deterioration of our environment due to emissions and our way of life can assist in speeding up this pattern, but its natural nonetheless IMO.

I used to do a TON to save the environment but somehow, the habits went away. Sadly. I'm not proud of this at all. Right now, we have a roommate and call me lazy but I don't feel like digging through 2 guys worth of garbage to sort out the recyclables. When I have my own apartment in a few weeks, I will do more things to help the environment.

I believe doing our part to save the environment is a normal mindset. I don't think it should be associated with any one group of people. Besides, saving the environment is about more than just global warming. Its about saving trees so that the Amazon stays full and lush. Its about desalinization so that our water supply does not disappear as our world population increases, its about going local and organic for your health and the sake of reducing pollution caused by large-scale productions.

Totally agree! Well said. The only difference is the public transportation. We don't take that. I cut my trips down to what I need for the entire week and we do as little as possible. My DH rides bike to work a few days a week to save gas and the enviroment.

Our bad thing is recycling. We have a CRAPPY recycling program on base and you never know when they are coming. We recycle what we can but they only take a bit. We are now using plastic and paper bags for the food bank because they reuse them for giving out food.

Yes I believe in global warming, I took a few geology classes and while I know the earth goes through periods of warming and cooling, I also believe that man has speed up the warming and our emissions are harming the earth.
Right now I am not doing much to help the enviroment (like I said in a previous post I don't even want to know how many trees were cut down for us to move..) but once we get settled in to the new place we will start doing our part again.
And no I don't think it's a hippie mindset

Do you do anything to help save our enviornment? Why or why not? The things I do are more for money saving and personal reasons, but yes, we do "green" things such as using vinegar to clean and refilling water bottles with a Brita instead of buying cases
Do you think saving our enviornment is just a hippie mindset? why or why not? Yes, because it's arrogant of humans to think we can change the Earth's atmosphere. What it boils down to is "Can we survive a global climate change?" The thing is, the planet doesn't care what we do.

I don't like to say that I believe in global warming because that makes it seem like it is a take it or leave it kind of thing. Like it could be true but it could be untrue. It's happening, what is there to "believe" in?

I also think that the earth is going through natural changes and it is naive to think that humans are the ONLY thing effecting the earth, but it is also extremely naive to think that we aren't effecting it at all. We populate so much of the earth and pump so many toxins into it, how could we not be?

I do everything I can short of living in a mud hut and burying my own poop to lessen my personal impact on the planet. I think that it is my job as a resident of this planet to preserve it for future generations of people and animals. I try to be as unselfish as I can when it comes to how I take advantage of the privilege of living here. I understand that I am not the only one who needs this planet to survive and I am mindful of that in my actions.

I also want to know, what is wrong with being a hippy? :P Since when is hippy a 4 letter word?

Whether or not I believe in global warming is irrelevant to me. I do know the earth goes through cycles, and I know that humans don't treat the earth very well.

Is this just a cycle? is it just humans? is it a mix of both??

All I know is that it could be a cycle and humanity will be snuffed out much like dinosaurs and so forth because we may not be able to survive it, OR humans are destroying the planet and it might be too late or not too late....

either way I will or won't survive... so I just do the best I can... :D:D:D

I don't necessarily believe in global warming. I think the planet moves through natural climate change cycle. I don't think that means we have free reign to do whatever we want on the planet. We cohabitate with each other, plant life, animals and each being plays a part in our ecosystem. The waste of natural resources, excess land fills and garbage barges (say that 10x fast.. :lol) is a travesty and we do need to do our part to stop it.

We recycle, use reusable shopping bags, water filters and reusable water containers, leave lights off, minimize heating/cooling, take public transportation when we can. We plan on getting a hybrid for our next car.

Do you believe in Global Warming? Why or why not?
Do you do anything to help save our enviornment? Why or why not?
Do you think saving our enviornment is just a hippie mindset? why or why not?

I believe in global warming the same way that I believe that light travels faster than sound, that the world is round, and that the sun will rise in the morning.

I don't have direct proof of any of these, but I have far more than casual circumstantial evidence for all of them.

Global warming has been measured world wide, regardless of the urban heat island effect, since the 1970's by global satellites. These satellites have shown an increase in temperature over the past 40 years of about 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit (conservative estimate). When we consider that this 1.5 degree change has melted trillions of gallons of ice, we see that even a "minor" change can have a huge impact.

Before the satellites, ground based weather stations have also shown an increase in average global temperatures. Admittedly, these ground based stations are subject to urban sprawl, where development of an area increases the number of buildings, and therefor amount of heat, in a specific area, but even when taking the heat island effect into account, they still show a general warming trend.

Non-human indicators of weather, such as the rings of trees and layers of ice in permanent glaciers, have also shown the history of the global temperature, indicating that the temperature has been increasing for about 100 years, and that this increase in temperature has come at a faster rate in the last 40 years. While it may be coincidental, the times where the rate of increase has been the fastest match closely with the rate of increase of industry, as well as shows times when volcanoes have actively contributed to CO2 levels.

One common misconception about global warming is that if global warming were true, it would increase winter temperatures, making them milder. For this, people need to understand how the world regulates its temperatures. There is an incredibly huge, giant, mind-bogglingly global ocean current called the Thermohaline Circulation. This current takes warm water and moves it towards the poles, and takes cold water and moves it towards the equator, keeping global temperatures comfortable.

The Thermohaline Circulation requires the ice caps in order to work... The ice caps act as a water pump, driving cold water down towards the bottom of the ocean, pulling the warmer water along behind. Without the Thermohaline Circulation, England would be as bitter cold as Siberia, coastal Washington (currently a rain forest) would be an arctic tundra, California would be as lifeless as the Sahara Desert, Florida would see hurricanes year-round, most of them being class 5, and there would be a very narrow strip between the poles and equator that could hold human life comfortably.

If ocean temperatures rise another degree, the ice caps will melt, and the Thermohaline Circulation will take about 20 years to stop (It is hard to stop quadrillions of gallons of water, so it would take a long time). After that current stops, it would take 10 years for ice caps to re-form, then another 400 years for the current to start back up again. (If you thought that stopping quadrillions of gallons of water was hard, try making it all start moving again.)

On to the second question... Do I do anything to help save the environment?

Well, yes, I do. And, I save money while doing it.

I drive as little as possible, in a fuel efficient car. When I can, I walk. This saves gas, which effects both the environment and my pocket book.

I keep my air conditioner set high, and my heater set low. This saves electricity and natural gas, which again effects both the environment and my pocket book. Whenever I can, I open windows to heat or cool my home.

I turn lights off when I leave the room... Again, saving money and the environment. I also use compact florescent lights wherever I can.

I buy efficient appliances, because I can't afford to pay high utility bills. Again, being frugal effects the environment.

I recycle aluminum. I do not recycle paper. I do not recycle plastic. If facilities existed in my area, I would recycle glass. That is, I would recycle glass if I used any. This saves both the environment and my pocket book in very subtle ways. It is far less damaging to the environment to recycle metals and glass than to mine it from the earth. It uses far less energy to recycle metals and glass than it takes to smelt new metal and glass.

On the other hand, it is less damaging to the environment to create new paper, than it is to recycle paper, and it also takes less energy to create new paper than it takes to recycle it. Also, since wood products are a renewable resource, if we increase our demand for wood, more trees will be planted. The new trees, less than 20 years old, are the primary cleaners of our air, producing more oxygen and removing more carbon dioxide from the air than anything except for algae.

The same goes for plastic. Plastics can be produced from live plants as well as it can be produced from crude oil, so increasing the demand for new plastics increases the demand to have more plants grown.

This saves my pocket book as well... Governments subsidize recycling plants... That is, if a recycling plant is losing money, the government pays for it. This expense trickles down to the tax payers. Recycling plants make money by recycling metals and glasses, and lose money by recycling papers and plastics.

Everything else, I gladly throw into the land fills. I see landfills as carefully managed storage facilities for future recycling efforts and a wonderful potential source for alternative fuels. While food decays in landfills, part of it turns into methane, which can be harvested and used in power plants... This either lowers the cost of disposing of garbage, or lowers power production costs, so again, saving the environment is as easy as throwing food in the trash, rather than down the drain.

I eat chicken more often than beef, and I do not eat meat more than once per day.

How does that save the environment? Yeah, this part is complicated. By not eating much beef, I lower the demand for cows. Cows are the biggest producers of methane in the world (even more so than all of the factories and all of the land fills), and unless we attach a hose to every cow's butt, we can't harvest this methane and use it... Instead, it becomes a pollutant which is around 30 times worse for the greenhouse effect than CO2, which is not easily absorbed by plants, and which is poisonous to most life.

So, by lowering the demand for cows, I make it less profitable for dairy farmers, so fewer cows are born, and less methane is released into the atmosphere.

This doesn't even take into consideration the deforestation for dairy farms, the environmental impact of transporting, slaughtering, and processing cows, or any of the dozens of other factors that make the cow industry worse for the environment than outright strip mining for coal.

Now for the third question: Is saving the environment a hippie mindset?

Yes and no.

Yes, hippies like to save the environment.

However, it isn't just a hippie mindset... it makes excellent business sense as well, especially for companies that plan on being competitive for decades, rather than just looking at quarterly profits. I think every good republican should be environmentally conscious, because it takes a big-picture, trickle-down, economically hard-ball approach to the world around us.

I honestly have no idea why more Republicans aren't in it for the money side of environmentalism. Yes, it's all flowers and blue skies, but it is also all greenbacks and profit margins.

There is a new power plant in the works that will recycle garbage directly into energy (rather than just harvesting methane). Currently, New York spends $13 per ton on getting rid of garbage. With this new power plant, they would be making a profit of $22 per ton... Can we say, lower taxes and bigger spending? What Republican doesn't love that? Maybe if the federal government got in on this early, they could funnel the profits directly into the military... Instead of putting $5,000 per second into a war over oil (at the cost of my former friends), we can just throw things away and make money.

If we needed more money in a hurry, because Cheney wants a big dividend check from Haliburton, then we could just dig up a landfill on our own land, instead of worrying about whose oil we're going to steal next.

And, the best part is, after we turn the waste into energy, we can turn around and sell the by-products (clean water, raw hydrogen, raw oxygen, raw carbon... raw every element on the periodic tables... If it goes in as a chemical, it goes out as a raw element) with another profit... To think, in 20 years, your new Hummer could have once been in a land fill.

ooo we have this on my debate blog on my site, lol..

Do you believe in Global Warming? NO
Do you do anything to help save our enviornment? To a point
Do you think saving our enviornment is just a hippie mindset? Yes!

I think that the earth naturally goes through cycles...i.e. the ice age ect..I do believe that we are contributing to it, but one volcano eruption adds more CO to the atmosphere than 10 years of human activity.

I personally don't believe it. I have researched this on both sides! The earth goes through cycles. Environmetalists do a lot more harm than good. Example last year the California fires got so bad b/c they banned controled burning. It's a natural process for forests to re-new it's self.

I think we can be cleaner, and not waste, such as recycling. I personally don't like to clean w/ chemicals, they are bad for your health not b/c it helps the environment. I use natrual things b/c of my sinus's and my daughters asthmal.

We need to get off oil, too expensive. We need to think of better fuels. I don't like the idea of using the Food supply to gas our cars, etc.

while there's absolutely nothing wrong with respecting the earth, recycling, saving energy, etc.... i have to say, i do it for all the wrong reasons [lol]

we use energy star appliances, rarely have the lights on, wash in cold water, recycle, etc etc.. but we do it to save money.. we bought a ford focus instead of a pickup because gas prices were going up [IF WE ONLY KNEW THAT GAS WOULD BE ALMOST FOUR FREAKIN DOLLARS A GALLON!! WE WOULD NEVER HAVE BOUGHT A CAR!!] i use paper bags instead of plastic bags because imo the plastic bags are annoying and just clutter up my under-the-sink cabinet [the paper bags are easier to reuse]

i'd like to think that i'm "helping" the environment, but truth is, i'm helping myself. my elecricity bill is $70 a month, but then again the TV never shuts off. i grew my own vegetables only because the ones at the commissary taste gross [i grew up on a farm, i know what REAL veggies are supposed to taste like]

i also believe that even if humans continue to beat up the Earth like we are, it'll be a while before it all comes crashing down and i'll be long gone by then. maybe i'm selfish, but this day and age, nobody looks out for anyone else.. even if i do my part to help the Earth, i'm one in billions.. i don't have much of an impact.
