a herniated disc while pregnant and have a c-section? My midwife made me nervous yesterday.

She said she really wanted to know which vertebrae had the slipped disc because they don't tend to use epidurals during sections when there is a herniation involved. They want to use general anaesthetic! I shouldn't need a c-section, I haven't up until this pregnancy, but it still has me a little freaked out. I was looking at the midwife saying, "is there some reason I can not deliver naturally???" She assured me that she has absolute faith that I can birth this baby naturally but wanted me to be aware. Well now I am.

I've never had a c-sections, but my sister had 2 and she has a few herniated disks. They put her under and did not give her an epi for that reason. I think the herniated disks increase the risk of paralysis.

I have a herniated disc (not where the epi went in) - I had no problems. I had an epi for less than 15 min though...

I have three herniated disk and never have gotten an epi before.but that was by choice. I think it may be where the herniated disk is whether or not they can do it.

:sigh Well let's just hope I continue my history delivering vaginally and have no complications that would make me have to get a section. Thanks for your responses ladies.

DId they do an MRI first to make sure they wouldn't be placing the epi where your herniation was?

no... my herniation is in my lumbar spine, i believe they stuck it well above my lumbar area

When I had mine with DS it was much lower than that! But it's good to know that they can do them up there!

I think that's a walking epidural, from what I'm reading, they can do it lower, but of course you can't walk with it.
