Have you tried: http://www.afcrossroads.com/ yet? There's usually pretty good base info and housing info as well. Good luck!

I asked DH about it, he has a lot of friends there and his old boss just got sent there too. He said to live on base if you can, housing there is best the Air Force has, also said to get a brick warmer... to plug into your car overnight so your oil stays warm and your car will start... I guess its routinely cold, so bring warm clothing... Good luck!

PM Kiwijus. She and her husband are stationed there, and have been there awhile. They live on base. She should be able to answer a lot of your questions, and she's really cool too!

I'm from North Dakota and lived on the base for a few years. If you have any questions, let me know. Be ready for bug spray, drastic weather changes, and lots "ya betcha"

I'm from MT, so it is fairly the same. Yes the weather will change at a blink of an eye (last week we had 90 degrees and the next day it literally dropped to 40 and hasn't quit raining. Snow is also seen in all months, including July!) But horror stories set aside, it isn't a bad place. Lots of history and outdoors stuff to do. But someone mentioned the warmer for the car, it is a MUST. Most people don't even know you can "plug in" your car but you do, and it will save your cold butt on more then one occasion. Good luck!

One difference from Great Falls compared to Minot is the cold. You will need a block heater for your car. It is to keep your oil and gas line from freezing. also, there are 15 long miles from the base to town with only a small hub there. Wind chills are horrible and high temps in the negatives for days. Then you get to summer and the highs are in the 100's and you can't believe that 4 months prior it was a 200 degree difference.

There are good things about Minot too. You just need to look for them. They have many restuarants that give military discounts, you have the state fair, the Hostfest (go for the lefsa!!!), also lots of heritage. Go camping, to the lake, your going to be about 4 hours from Kenosee (water park in Canada), and the peace gardens. See a hockey game in the winter and head to Grand Forks to see the Souix play.

If you get to Bismark, they are expanded more then when we lived there. It is about 2 hours south of minot but go see the fts down there and also eat at Texas Roadhouse.

You will get stuck sometimes but you will find that no matter what, people will go and the roads DON'T close for anything. If you are to be at work at 7, you will be to work at 7 even if that means driving a snowmoble.

I know ND and MT have a little bit of difference in cold but we still need block heaters! Once it is below zero it doesn't matter how cold...it's just plain f'n cold! :D

I'm not dening it gets cold here but in the 2.5 year we lived here, maybe one weekend we needed to plug in. I agree that when it gets below zero it is cold, but when the high is -10 for days..weeks..that's cold.

I should tell you that it depends on the year. When I was growing up I remember highs in the -20's with wind chills in the -80's. They cancelled school for that. When my DH was stationed up there, the first year we got a warm snap. It was nice for Thanksgiving and we met in April. He learned cold the next year.

I'll take MT's wind compared to that bitter cold. Although, it's weird. I miss it sometimes.

WOW!!!! I'll be going from one extreme to another! I've lived with in 20 minutes of beaches my whole life! YIKES!!!! My DH and I are really worried about this cold weather! Yeah, I know we will be just fine, it's just the thought of it....I really appreciate all of your comments. We are looking to buy as soon as we get up there. I've been looking online at house, we would like to buy new construction, but it seems they are far and few. I'm worried about selling the house we have here too!!! So much to do in just a few months!!! :hairpull

Minot is growing. I'm thinking back into the history of it. If you are going to get a house in that area, go either to the south side (south of broadway and kinda west) or get it in the northern area around ING. If you go to east or town, you are getting more into the industrial area and the west you hit Burlington. Burlington is a nice place and you can take back roads to get to work. If you go towards more the south side, there is more developement and you are closer to SuperWalmart. Mom said that when she was up there the other day it was growing there. DON'T get a house along the souris river!! It is known to flood and it is due for that again. Granted it hasn't happened for about 10 to 15 years but it is due.

Selling wise, Minot is really bad about cycles. If it is a nice house in a good neighborhood, you should be ok. Remember, you probly will be selling to a baser. Many people who live in Minot have lived there for a LONG time. Look at the Minot Daily News. That is the local newspaper.

If you have anymore questions, please ask.
