View Full Version : Praying to other gods

This may sound ridiculous, but I have to throw it out there in case I am not the only one. :lol

Personally, I am not religious. I do believe in a higher power, but I don't know it/his/her name or where it/he/she came from or why.

When I see someone in pain, or a friend is going through something, though...I will pray to whichever god they believe in to ask for them to soothe my friend's heartache.

Does anyone else do this, and does that seem blasphemous since I don't necessarily believe in the god I'm speaking to? I simply believe in the possibility....so I feel that it can't hurt.

Feel free to discuss...or call me a weirdo. :lol

No I dont. I, like you am not religious. I do believe in a higher power but not a "god" persay. I have no idea what the higher power is. Male, female, a being, entity, etc. So I normally dont pray but just think good thoughts or pray to the higher power. But I dont pray to other peoples gods. Because if I dont believe in it I cant really pray to it kwim?

I think that it is good to believe in some sort of higher power, and I dont' think there is anything wrong with interceding to a god you don't necessarily believe in on a friend's behalf. (does that make sense?) If that god is a good and just god, he/she/it/they will take whatever prayers they recieve. I also believe that a god doesn't always answer, and that doesn't mean that he/she/it/they didn't recieve the prayer.

I agree. I believe there is "someone" out there. And I personally think as humans we almost need to beleive that or else our Moral judgement would be nil.

At first I thought this thread was talking about Paegan gods..and I was like "Hey that's sweet!"

:hugs back.

I personally think that people may have a problem because Westerner's in general are very Monotheistic.

Have you looked at the Shinto religion by any chance? I think that's something you'd be interested in Loretta. :yes

yeah it's a crazy religion. Very nature oriented and pure.

A lot of Buddhist and Confucian elements thrown in the mix :giggle

And I hear you about the stack of books..I'm still trying to get through one I started during Christmas, and I'm child-less. :blush

I don't pray at all, period.

Even when I was a practicing christian in my early 20's, I didn't believe in the power of prayer. I never have and never will.

When I say I'll pray for someone (rare because I usually say "sending good thoughts/vibes"), what I'm really doing is trying to send positive energy out into the universe on their behalf.

I think that we are all searching for God. We are all trying to find our palce in this world and why we are here. If you are unsure of who God is the only way to find Him is to search him out, so that is what you are doing. I belivie God hears all prayers, doesn't always anwser them as we expect, but hears them all. Good luck on your own spritiual journey:)

weirdo.

i think you probably know i only pray to God, but that's bc i know he listens. :lol
i'm definitely not going to project my beliefs on anyone else though and condemn you for doing w/e it is you do. like i wouldn't expect you to have a conversation with my imaginary friend, so why would i excpect you to pray to (my) God?

I think that you are wonderful. Not knowing who God really is to you, haven't stopped you from having faith. I actually think that its a GREAT thing. I think less emphasis should be placed on who you are praying to but the fact that you are a GREAT enough person to pray for them at all. Not everyone has faith but for you to unselfishly pray to the higher power they believe is awesome.

:edit
Just because you are praying to more than one name whose to say its not the same person...The mystery of our faith.

I believe in a higher being regardless of what religion...
I am muslim by birth and do believe in Allah. But at the same time I will go to a Pagoda(Buddhist temple) and ask for blessings in my life, Everytime I come home to Myanmar, I will go to the Pagoda and pray for my family and everyone close to me. DH is catholic and I will go to church for him to light a candle and pray for his safety. I do that also in buddhism and islam. Just so that I cover most bases when it comes to DH safety. There is nothing wrong with giving extra prayers here and there...Do I make sense...

I personally believe there is one god/divine creator and he represents himself to different cultures in different ways and thats how we come up with "different" gods and religions. i think the emphasis shoud be your personally spirtitual relationship with that creator and not the religion you follow. the way i view polytheistic religions is like how christians have different angels for different things but there is still one main dude. i pray to the christian idea of god just because thats who i grew up believing who was "up there" and thats how i am comfortable thinking of him. i dunno sorry if it doesn't make sense.. maybe it makes sense to someone else too!

For me personally, I cannot pray to any god accept the one true Christian God. It is a commandment and it doesn't matter what religion the other person is.

You are not alone. You described pretty much exactly how I feel and what I believe. I pray to someone... I have no idea who that is or what they are, but I pray to them. I don't believe in THE God, like the christian God, but I feel like I either have my own personal higher power that watches over me, or that there is some type of god or higher power that watches over all of us. I don't know how to explain it. I just believe that there is something there and I don't know who or what it is, but I do believe it's higher than my being, so I go to "it" for guidance and prayer.

My God tells me in his first commandment to only pray to Him..:wub

I do feel a little hypocritical when I "pray" (I don't even think thats what I am really doing), if I just want to send out good thoughts to someone who may need them because I don't believe in any one god, and I'd hate to go around saying that, and then turn to my imaginary god if I needed something, y'know? So, I just try to stay away from that all together. I do think there is something out there, but it is not in my mind a christian god, it could be nature, who knows? So, pray to whomever you want to, Loretta, and more power to ya.
