View Full Version : Question about deployments
Mindy 05-24-2006, 03:45 PM I know a lot of you have your SO's gone right now and I was kind of curious. How long and how often do y'all's men have to go? I don't know any sailors around Campbell and I was wondering. My husband's deployments can last anywhere from 12-18 months and he is usually gone every other year or so. How are navy deployments different? I'm not trying to start a debate or cause drama I'm actually curious :) .
My fiancee's forward deployed to Sasebo. He can be out for any length of time between a couple of weeks to 3-4 months, and then he'll be back in port for a week or so, and will have a day off during that period.
Chevy_Gurl 05-24-2006, 04:07 PM Trav's deployment schedule was for 6.5 months.
My friends whos hubbies are Marines go for aroun 7 months in country and 6/7 months when they go with the Navy.
KDMatthews 05-24-2006, 04:19 PM my dh is on a boomer, so he's out for approximately 3 months and then home for 4!!! I know that sounds great, but during the 3 months...hardly any communication (a few letters, maybe a call if lucky)
piggypunkinetta 05-24-2006, 04:48 PM Dh is suppose to go out every 18 months, but not lately. They have been waiting just over year. That doesn't include work-up and all the other underway periods. Some ships are better than others.
SubmarineWife 05-24-2006, 04:58 PM my dh is on a boomer, so he's out for approximately 3 months and then home for 4!!! I know that sounds great, but during the 3 months...hardly any communication (a few letters, maybe a call if lucky)
The above is the same as me, but without the phone calls :thinking damn i think im missing out :lol As it was said....communication is very little. Email is always getting turned off or they aren't in a location to send out emails. Maildrops are very few and far between. We can't just pack a care package and send it. With us it has to be a special size...gallon size ziplock baggy or a legal size letter.
MontanaSweetie 05-24-2006, 05:02 PM When my husband was on an Aircraft Carrier (USS John F. Kennedy), he did 2 deployments in the 4 years he was stationed on there. His first deployment was 7 1/2 months, the 2nd deployment was 6 months.
He did shore duty for 3 years.
Now he's on sea duty again with a squadron. He's on deployment right now, and its only supposed to be for 6 months.
My husband is not planning on staying in the military. If he were, the squadron he would deploy with would go on deployment 3 times in 4 years. In 2006, late 2007-2008, and in 2009...each for 6 months, but we all know how deployments get extended.
luvmysailor2001 05-24-2006, 05:35 PM For the navy it depends but typically a 6 month deployment will happen ever 14-16 months but when they are home they really arent' home. They are prepping for the next deployment with workups, exercises, certifications, approvals, etc...
Every sea duty we've been on my husband has averaged 9 out of 12 months gone each year - it's just not all in one chunk. It might be gone 3 months, home 1 month, gone 3 weeks, home 2 weeks, gone 6 weeks, home 2 weeks, etc all building up to the major deployment which is typically 6 months but lately have been known to be as long as 8 or longer
Mindy 05-24-2006, 10:48 PM Wow, I think that would actually be harder than a 12-18 month deployment. I know that for the year he's gone, he can't be here, but to have him gone for 6 months, home for 4-5 then gone again would suck majorly. Kudos to you ladies!
Laurie119 05-24-2006, 11:02 PM It all depended for us. For the first 7 years we were married, he went out for at most, 2 months a couple of times a year. While in Japan, it was 3 or 4 months out, 1 1/2-2 months home. Since being here, he's been on 2 6 month deployments, and 1 8 1/2 month deployment.
happygirl0486 05-25-2006, 12:00 AM my dh is a Marine and he can go for 6 to 12 months(I'm a little over half way done with 6 tour right now).
=Mrs.AiNokeA= 05-25-2006, 12:47 AM For my DH this is what is "supposed" to happen but you know the military lol. He's supposed to leave for 4 months then be back for 4 then leave again for 4 then back for 4 you get the point lol. But his deployment coming up they said to expect 4-6 months so we arent even really sure about that.
Frankie Lee 05-25-2006, 12:55 AM Usually he has been gone anywhere from 3-9 months!! He had one almost 10 month cruise in 2003!!
JustBeingGinger 05-25-2006, 09:21 AM Well my DF went back on Sea Duty last April and in over a year he has had a 3 month deployment and is now currently on his 6 month deployment, and he says that he is due to go back on a 6 month in the begining of 2008.
This does not include the "work up's". He was gone for a total of two months just doing his work up's for this 6 month deployment. Plus they are always taking a 2 week cruise here and a 3 week cruise there.
In my opinion they are out to sea more then they are on shore but then again that is why they call them Sailors and they are in the Navy.
BLBnJVB3 05-25-2006, 09:51 AM John did 3 deployments on the JFK and 1 on the Roosevelt (the 1st time he was in he was in a squadron in Jax and he did 1 on the JFK and 1 on the Roosevelt) each of them were 6 months. They also leave for underways, too. The length of those always changes. This past time he was on Sea Duty, combining the amount of time he was gone on deployment and all the underways, he was gone 2 out of the 4 years.
Britt 05-25-2006, 10:30 AM Now he's on sea duty again with a squadron. He's on deployment right now, and its only supposed to be for 6 months.
Have no fear! Iwakuni has a "get'um in, get'um out" mentality!
If he does get extended, it will be for days, maybe 2 weeks, but nothing more.
