View Full Version : Preeclampsia?
sara_ana101 05-24-2008, 03:02 AM I am 99% positive I have it but my doctor isn't checking for it. I have been haveing very high blood pressure for the past month or so. Sometimes almost at stage 2 hypertension. I have been haveing dizzy spells with pain under my right rib cage, confusion, and headaches. I told a nurse about this and she just said it was high blood pressure and nothing to worry about. They have even checked my blood pressure at every visit and over 3 times it has been high enough for them to have to retake it, and even then it is still no lower than on the high high normal side. I have been gaining about 3 lbs a week now and I am eating small amounts and of good food (no junk food more often then once every few weeks). I am almost 32 weeks along. My legs are swelling like balloons. Tonight they got sooo bad that they felt almost numb. They have doubled in size from the swelling in the past 24 hours. I have been laying on my left size and elevateing my feet but it doesn't help. I don't know what to do. I hurt sooo bad lately. My doctor keeps telling me all of this is fine...that I'm overreacting...that everything will be fine, and that all I need to do is cut back on my eating (even though I told him I am eating normal and healthy). Should I trust him against my own instincts?
P.S. sorry for seeming like such a whine baby. :sigh
VinnysGirl 05-24-2008, 03:04 AM You need to see someone else... get a second opinion, go to the ER or an urgent care facility. If your legs are going numb and you are getting dizzy it's not a good thing and it's not something you can just sweep under the rug!!!!
brandewijn 05-24-2008, 05:14 AM I would see another doctor. I had eclampsia and was induced due to signs of my kidneys failing among other things. Let's just say, better safe than sorry and if you do have it, you need to be closely monitored. Pre-E and E are no fun. Hope all turns out well and GL with another doctor if that is what you decide on.
Soldierslove08 05-24-2008, 05:28 AM I would also see another doctor! I have not had any issue with my doc office thank gosh but you should really see someone who is more about your needs then brushing you off. That would kinda piss me off. I am sorry hun. If you go into ER and tell them what is going on and who your doc is and also that he or she has not really been paying attention to what you are saying they will in most hospitals give you a recomindation to go some where else. I would go some where else ASAP if you are feeling like that.
Bryanna 05-24-2008, 06:22 AM you definitely sound like you need to get a second opinion from another doctor
fridayheather 05-24-2008, 08:46 AM I'm surprised your doctor is taking this so lightly, preeclampsia is nothing to mess with. And you are totally not being a whiny baby, you are having serious symptoms. I had pre-e with my first pregnancy and was in and out of the hospital because of my issues: swelling, hypertension, headaches, vision issues, numbness in my feet and my right arm. I even had Lydia emergency c-section because she went into distress because of the pre-e (my bp shot up to 177/107 and her heartrate dropped drastically twice), I came pretty close to having a stroke and losing my DD.
I would definitely see a different doctor, this is your life and your baby's life at risk here. :hugs I hope you get some better medical help soon!
Mommy2Bailey 05-24-2008, 11:06 AM go to the er!!
sandykay 05-24-2008, 11:10 AM go to the er or get an appointment with another doc
USCGBoxerMom 05-24-2008, 11:12 AM Go to the ER....don't waste your time trying to find another Dr. You need to be seen now.
airmanssweetie 05-24-2008, 11:15 AM I'm surprised your dr is so laid back. I was in and out every week with high bp (not even really high, IMO) for 7 weeks! It wasn't fun at all. Def. go to the ER. Sometimes with pre-e, it can be accompanied by HELLP and that is very very dangerous!!!! Get a 2nd opinion and ALWAYS trust your instincts!
sara_ana101 05-24-2008, 11:27 AM I'm not gonna go to the ER but I am going to look for another doctor this monday. I slept for 8 hours and my right leg is still swollen pretty big but my left one went down to just mild swelling.
airmanssweetie 05-24-2008, 11:32 AM Honestly, you need to go to the ER, especially if you are getting the pain in your side They ALWAYS told me to come RIGHT IN to L&D if i got blurry vision, headache that didnt go away after tylonel and laying down, pain in my side etc. This isn't something to mess around with sweetie, it can end up being a life and death situation if left untreated for both you and your unborn child. Not to mention the hidden things that could be going on that have no symptoms sometimes, like HELLP, which like i said, is very dangerous.
Swelling is also a normal part of pregnancy but you are still having the other symptoms of pre-e and it's best to go in and get monitored.
If it were me, i'd go to l&d and get monitored and have the pre-e panel done.
2123wife 05-24-2008, 02:15 PM You need a new doctor. Nuff said. I sure hope you get someone to listen to you soon.
fitmommyof4 05-24-2008, 03:53 PM I totally agree.. GO to the ER just to ease your mind.. it's not worth risking your life or the baby. I had it develp suddenly w/ my first son. I gained 8lbs in 1 week and 6 more in 3 days.. I had hte headache, blurry vision.. I went in and they induced me immediately. Please go get it checked.
sara_ana101 05-24-2008, 11:27 PM This is Evan, Sara's Navy man...
I brought her to Labor and Delivery today and right away the nurses got us into a room. A doctor came in that we even felt a lot more comfortable with than our regular doctor. He knew exactly what to do at that very moment. She was placed on monitors and blood was drawn. She started a twenty-four hour urine test. The doctor has her on a strict toxemia diet, being that she very well may have pre-eclampsia... She was transfered to a different room (with a better bed) and her mom got there around that time. So I got home to get some food and rest for work in the morning. I am going to run by the hospital to see her before work. They got her some food and a sleeping pill for the night (I just talked to her). Either she or I shall update you guys tomorrow on what happens.
Oh, by the way, when she was hooked up to the monitors, we got to here our baby's heartbeat the whole time. It was funny when she kicked the monitoring equipment attatched to Sara, and she would not stop attacking it.
Talk to you soon...
-Evan
2123wife 05-25-2008, 12:20 AM Thank you so much for posting Evan. I am glad that she went to the ER and got checked. It sounds like she is in much better hands then she was with her doctor and her doctor needs to get his a$$ handed to him about being so lax about eclampsia. It is NOT something to ignore. I hope you both are able to get some rest tonight and let her know that we are thinking of her and I will have you guys in my prayers tonight:)

airmanssweetie 05-25-2008, 12:29 AM I'm glad she in went! Thanks for updating us Evan! I had to do 3 of those 24hr urine test , 1 whilst being kept overnight and they suck! (As do the bp panel tests!) I wish her the best!
truzbabygirl 05-25-2008, 12:30 AM She had the same thing I did with Bradley! I hope she gets to feeling better soon!....
pennylayne 05-25-2008, 12:34 AM I had toxemia very badly with DD and I was in LnD everyday for 2 weeks unitl they decided Enoug was enough an delivered me at 37 weeks with a bp of 165/110. No salt!! my legs were like tree trunks and I had to be on magnisium sulfate all during the labor and for 24 hours afterwards. But the good news is you loose like 30lbs of water in the hospital. jus be safe!!! use common sense and don't hesistae to call the dr, thats wat they paid the big bucks for :)
fitmommyof4 05-25-2008, 09:30 AM So glad to hear she went to the hospital. I hope now she can get the care she needs. Praying.
instant_oatmeal 05-25-2008, 11:23 AM Go to the er! That is very serious and I'm surprised that any doctor would take it so lightly.
sara_ana101 05-25-2008, 02:44 PM Hey... Evan again.
She just told me she will probably be staying another night. She definitly has it, but they do not know severe it is untill the end of the 24-hour test. She is doing better though. She will probably be on pretty strict bedrest after this. That means I get to push her around in wheelchairs like I did at the zoo the other day. I love doing that for her...
Anywho, she got her breakfast, brunch, and lunch with no problem. I will be seeing her in a little bit, and I will update you guys.
Talk to you later,
Evan
ilovekale 05-25-2008, 03:29 PM oh wow, i hope that she is alright...i'm glad she got checked when she did. good instincts! that is so sweet that her hubby would post for her! keeping us all updated.. i'll be praying for ya'll. :hugs
sara_ana101 05-26-2008, 12:37 AM Hey everyone... Evan again...
She is staying another night and is going to talk to her doctor in the morning. Good news is, she did not even have enough protein in her urine to have Pre-Eclampsia. And I talked to the nurse about HELLP syndrome; she said no to that. However, we do think she may be having a bit of trouble with her thyroid. She has had trouble with it before and it got better, but we think the pregnancy may have started it back up again... So yeah, she is at the hospital watching Army Wives at the moment.
Talk to you guys later,
Evan
sailornwife 05-26-2008, 08:31 AM yerp i was told i didnt have it beacuse my proten wasnt high enough.. go to l &d and they will ask you to do a 24hr pee test to see your proten counts.. they said mine were low enough but there that i should be fine.. after i gave birth turns out i did have it.. go to l &d and get checked

Thanks for another update!!! I've been thinking about her a lot! You're such an awesome fiancé!!! Tell Sara we're thinking about her and hope she recovers soon and that baby remains safe!!!!!!!!!!! HUGS!!! :hugs
sara_ana101 05-26-2008, 03:58 PM Hey this is Sara'. I am finally back home. Thanks so much for the support through all of this.
I didn't have enough protein in the 24 hour urine test but they said that it doesn't mean I couldn't have alot of protein if I did it another day. So they have me on a very low sodium diet, bedrest, and are going to keep a close eye on my blood pressure. I also found out I was haveing contractions (I didn't even realize with everything else going on)...so bedrest is also to keep me from going into premature labor (which is a very high possibility if I don't stay off my feet. About the thyroid...that also is a very high possibility but I can't do anything about it until I have her. Btw...I also have to have laser treatment for stage 3 precancer cells soon after she is born. So right now I will be happy to make it through all of this. I also found out my due date is off...I should only have about 5 weeks left because I am 35 weeks along.
Firefly'sGirl 05-26-2008, 04:20 PM I"m glad that you went in. Take care of you and baby bean. :hugs
