View Full Version : Im frustrated
*Sarah* 05-26-2008, 11:40 AM I found out today that if the baby is a boy we can not give him DH's name like we were planning. We were going to have a jason jr, but it is against Italian law and even though we are americans, the baby is being born on italian soil and will have an italian birth certificate.... one of my friends has been fighting with everyone around here to try to do that for her son and they wont let her.
I am so irritated cause DH really wanted a JR. :(
HeatherNichole 05-26-2008, 11:41 AM Really?? Thats a law? How bizarre...What if you had his middle name be Jason and you could call him Jason?? Or could you name him Jason but give him a different middle name??
:hugs what a bummer
browneyedbeauty 05-26-2008, 11:42 AM could you find out and fly home to give birth on us soil?
brandewijn 05-26-2008, 11:42 AM Use your DH's name as the middle name. :) That way he still has something from his daddy but still has his OWN name and goes by Italian law.
*Sarah* 05-26-2008, 11:44 AM could you find out and fly home to give birth on us soil?
I am not allowed to fly after I start my 3rd trimester b/c of preterm labor and I dont want to spend the last 12 weeks away from DH and possibly have him not with me. This is his first baby, and I want him to be with us.
browneyedbeauty 05-26-2008, 11:47 AM Bummer.
I'm sorry Sarah.
AH64DWife 05-26-2008, 11:52 AM Use your hubby's name just do not add a "Jr" to the name until you return to the states...is that allowed? Probably not since it is too easy of an answer.
Loretta 05-26-2008, 11:56 AM I'm sorry, Sarah :hugs
Darushka 05-26-2008, 11:58 AM I'd research and see if you can change the birth certificate after you get back here. That's just lame.
Aplatel87 05-26-2008, 12:00 PM You can still call him that. It just can't be on paper Im guessing. Thats still dumb though.
*~*Cori*~* 05-26-2008, 12:02 PM Oh Sarah that is terrible! Im so sorry Sweetie! :(
I would just name him after your DH anyways and maybe add on the "Jr" if you want when you get to the states. Can you admend the BC after you get to the states? I did not know it would be an Italian birth certificate wow! I thought it would be an American since the baby would be born on US property at the base!

I mentioned that to DH so that may be an option, I just dont know how the process will go. I am just glad we are finding out now. My friend is due in 6 weeks and found out a few days ago. We dont even know the sex yet so this may not even be a concern for us:lol
Thanks ladies

:yes The Italian birth certificate is filed before the American is. It has to be sent to the Consulate to be signed and verified. My older two boys got their Italian birth certificates before the American Born Abroad Birth Certificates and passports came back.
Sarah - I have no idea about the restrictions about naming a child in Italy. I hope you can find something you like.

TOTALLY off subject but I'm just curious....will your child have dual citizenship? That would rock and I would SO keep that for my kids.
Jennifer 05-26-2008, 12:17 PM Does the Italian birth certificate apply even for those born at the base hospital?

I believe they have the option to be dual citizens but I'm not sure. We never looked into it. :dunno I think there is more paperwork to be filled out, but it might have needed to be done at birth.

:yes My boys were born at NAS Sigonella Naval Hospital and they both have Italian birth certificates. I think because they still need to list a city where they were born, ours say Catania.
ETA: If I remember correctly, we were told we needed to carry those Italian birth certificates with us until such time that the passports came in.

They no longer get dual citizenship. I believe that just changed, but the nurse informed us of that when we went for our orientation

Yes, b/c the base is Italian, we are renting it pretty much. :(

My son was born in Japan but wasn't given the option to have dual citizenship. Since both my husband and I are American, it wasn't possible. However, a guy that my hubby worked with there married a Japanese woman and they had a baby...so their baby has dual citizenship. She'll have it until she's 18 then has to decide if she wants to be an American citizen or Japanese citizen.
It could be different there though...I have no idea!
little.lili 05-26-2008, 12:26 PM second name?
ilovekale 05-26-2008, 12:31 PM oh wow, i've never heard of such a thing. so sorry! :(
brandewijn 05-26-2008, 12:36 PM They no longer get dual citizenship. I believe that just changed, but the nurse informed us of that when we went for our orientation
Awww! That stinks. :(
Caimbrie 05-26-2008, 01:00 PM That sucks
Shannon Marie 05-26-2008, 01:06 PM That is just weird. Why would that be a law? :thinking
I hope things work out. I'd go for dh's name as the middle like the other ladies were saying. Best of luck! :hugs
couldn't you name him _(different first name)__ Jason __(your last name here)___ ? and then call him jason?
see_jay_elle 05-26-2008, 11:05 PM Wow, that is a ridiculous rule. Is it possible to just add the Jr when he gets to the US? I'm so sorry, I know how important naming is :(
flangl18 05-26-2008, 11:08 PM Another suggestion is to give him the same name, but a second middle name as well so it is not technically a junior. Hope it all works out!
RunAwayLove 05-26-2008, 11:08 PM how strange! you can always have it changed when back on american soil cant you? like make his middle name be the first name and just flip flop them..?
PeppermintRei 05-26-2008, 11:16 PM Use your hubby's name just do not add a "Jr" to the name until you return to the states...is that allowed? Probably not since it is too easy of an answer.
Actually, Germany is the same way and we had some friends leave off the junior and what happened is they couldn't acquire a SSN for their baby. Their son is 14 months and he still has no SSN because they are still fighting about it with SS.
JKirstiH 05-26-2008, 11:33 PM That sucks, but you can do a name change over here. Through the court system:hugs What a pain in the butt though jeez
Jennifer 05-27-2008, 01:16 AM I was talking about this last night with DH and he reminded me that recently some of our friends had a little boy and he is a JR! I'll ask them about this
