what do you think?

yall all know i work at a tanning salon :D
we have a few ladies who tan while pregnant, i obviously have never had a child so im not sure what the "do's" and "dont's" are, but i think tanning would be a no no.
i know if you are pregnant and want to tan at our place you have to bring a doctors note so our mgr can keep it on file.

i was just curious what every once else thought.

I guess if you need a tan that bad... no different then being outside and getting tan. I guess if everyone says tanning beds are so safe why the doctors note?

I guess it would be no different than those that lay out in the actual sun day after day.

the doctors note...

if for some reason the child has a problem, or the pregnancy fails we dont want them to sue us.

I was always told NO NO NO. For some reason, baking your body while a precious baby is inside doesn't seem like the brightest idea. Personally, I wouldn't allow pregnant women to tan at a salon I owned strictly for liability reasons. Just because they got permission from their doctor doesn't mean they won't come back to bite you when something goes wrong...everyone is so sue happy now a days. I wouldn't trust it.

I'm seriously curious if tanning in a tanning bed is soo safe for regular non pregnant people why is it not safe while pregnant? I personally do not do tanning beds and wear sunscreen daily. i don't avoid the sun, but I attempt to protect my skin. I guess I just don't get why it is ok or 'safe' for non preggos but not while pregnant. why are the risks different? :dunno

no. not for me. i'm hot enough baking this kid as it is...if i need some rays, i'll sit outside in a beach chair...too risky for me.

Because there are selfish people in the world that only care about themselves! It's all about how they look! Forget what it may do to the baby!

I think you read my mind tonite...a girl I went to school with is about 3 mos preggo and still tanning...and her doctor said it was okay up until 6 mos...but I personally think its a no no...there are all kinds of warnings and you have to sign a waiver "just in case" I personally wouldn't risk my babies health for my vanity....

The same reason you're not supposed to bake in the sun and get sunburnt. Overheating can cause harm to the baby.

I was under the impression that it was much like the risks of being in a hot tub...that your body temperature just gets to high...I am not sure though...

as long as you tan responsibly there is nothing wrong with tanning in a tanning bed.
i tan 3 times a week (at the most) in a 12 minute tanning bed. that gives me a nice tan and im happy with it.

im not sure what the risks are... thats why i asked :D ive never been pregnant so i don tknow all the risk.

yes your body temp does raises while tanning, more so depending on which bed you use and how long you tan.

I wouldn't do it, but not because of the baby. At 7-9 months, the skin is stretched so taut, it would burn so easily. Plus, when on a bed and not pregnant, you're close to the bulbs as it is, but when the belly is bulging that much, it's right up there next to the bulbs. But honestly, going to a tanning bed while pregnant is no different than spending 3+ hours at the beach during the summer in the heat of the day in a bikini while pregnant.

Tanning is fine in moderation. But it wouldn't be a priority, or even a consideration, when pregnant for me. Not because of safety issues. Mainly logistics. How the eff am I supposed to haul my beach ball belly out of that bed?! It's hard enough for me to get in and out now :lmao

:yes I've done a little bit of my own research and learned that tanning about 3 times a week at 8-12 minutes is actually pretty healthy. It's the people who tan excessively (i.e. every other day for 20 min.) that end up with alligator skin and skin problems.

you should see some of the people that come in the tanning place.

they come in everyday... EVERYDAY! and if they miss a day they are highly upset, they always lay the full time, and their skin is sooo dark and leathery... ehhhh

i like to have a little bit of a tan, i dont want ppl to think im a different nationality than what i am...

Tanning is actually recommended for people that suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) to alleviate the symptoms of not getting enough light (i.e. vitamin d) I'd go once a week for 12 minutes and feel TONS better. But it was not specifically to get a tan. It was to keep from wanting to kill other people around me. :lol

Grody! No thank you!

Thinking about this makes me remember growing up. I used to spend my summers at the pool & there was always this woman there daily. She would slather butter/margarine on her skin every hours. It was horrid!

No one can mistake me for a whitey! They may mistake me for a ghost, though! I do everything in my power not to tan! :heehee

When I worked at a tanning salon, if we could tell the person was pregnant we would not let them tan. I dont know if I would feel right being pregnant and tanning. I would feel like I was frying my unborn child..?

I was thinking the same thing. I mean, I've never been preggo, but how could that possibly be remotely comfortable?

That is why I kept tanning longer than I intended to. It made me feel sooo much better.

You're at higher risk to burn while preg, and the lamps make the temp rise too much to be very safe for the baby. Preggos shouldn't be at a beach on a hot day sunning in a bikini for 3+ hrs either.

Nothing wrong with tanning occasionally as a nonpreggo, though. As T said it's fairly healthy to go one to two times a week for 15 mins or less.

FTCWifey

Devil's advocate here. Not that I would do it myself, but tanning in a bed isn't any more harmful to your baby than tanning outside. The only concern there is is raising the body temp, which is easily done outside baking in the sun. I would think that at least a bed minimizes your time exposed.
