View Full Version : yeast infection in small kids?
Brandi 05-28-2008, 04:36 PM I *think* Shelby has the start of a yeast infection going on. I haven't noticed any weird discharge or anything like that, but she's complained yesterday and today of it itching and it does look a little bit red down there. No complaints of pain, she just says it itches and the redness makes me think that she's irritating it from itching.
Do any of you mamas of girls have experience with this? Does a normal yeast infection require a doctor's visit or would I treat it the same way that I would with an adult yeast infection?
I did take hunter in once for a yeast infection on his butt that came from a diaper rash, and they told me to go to walgreens and buy monitstat or lotrimin and apply for about a week, until the rash was fully gone.
So, do I follow the same procedure for her? :confused
MomWifeMe 05-28-2008, 04:38 PM My girls haven't experienced it but my niece did and her pediatrician said to bring her in.
Heather 05-28-2008, 04:42 PM Lily gets like that now and then. I've never considered a yeast infection. I just give a little A&D and tell her to put it where it bothers her. Usually after a day or so shes not complaining anymore.
aelsass 05-28-2008, 04:43 PM I would bring her in honestly.

I think I'm only thinking about the possibilities b/c I just had one not too long ago and it was effing miserable! :lol Otherwise, I probably would have not even thought of it either, and just used some of the diaper rash cream on her. Is it normal for little girls to get tender or itchy down there without it being an actual yeast infection? What is the likelihood of it actually being an infection? We haven't done any swimming or anything lately and she hasn't been on any antibiotics or anything. I might try some diaper cream for her today and tonight, then make an appt for her tomorrow if she's still complaining about it. I didn't even think to try the A&D but that might work for her.

I think that's a good plan.

Allergies can also cause yeast infections..
TREATMENT
It is important to keep the area dry and clean. Specific treatment is given by antifungal agents. Alternative management is by taking probiotics, such as lactobacillus acidophillus or bifido bacteria which are considered ‘friendly bacteria’. They can be found in ‘live’ yoghurt and products like cottage cheese, or in a supplement form.
It is also good to adopt a low sugar diet
Berkley 05-28-2008, 05:09 PM Diaper Rash cream will make it worse. Ash had a nasty one a few years back. We got lotrimin the stuff for althete's foot and it cleared it up in one day. Take her in to be sure tho
aelsass 05-28-2008, 05:16 PM Has she been taking bubble baths? Maybe the soap? Annabelle I only use the Cetaphil cause of her skin sensitivity.
Mommy2Bailey 05-28-2008, 05:52 PM Bailey just got over a yeast infection. Her Dr said I could use over the counter medicine for her.

Oh crap, yes she has. We actually just switched a few nights ago also. I got that sesame street stuff b/c it's all they had at the little nex thingy. I didn't even think that could be it. Now I'm wondering if our regular bubble bath is the culprit of Hunter's irritation issues that he's been having. I'll stop using that stuff tonight and see if that helps. I didn't even think about that. :arg
Heather 05-28-2008, 06:19 PM I've always thought soap might be the cause of Lilys redness/itchiness when it happens. I think sometimes she washes a little to much and doesn't rinse well. Both my kids are very sensitive to soaps. Bubble baths are a huge no-no in our house. Baths in general don't even happen anymore and they both only shower every other day unless they have gotten dirty.
I've also thought Lily's redness/itchiness could be from her not wiping herself well enough. I have caught her several times doing her stuff and just hopping off the toilet and running off. Shes getting better about it now thats shes older.

Yeah the little girl I keep alot can't have regular bubble baths either much. And for Belle can have them as long as its the cetaphil. But I stay away from regular bubble bath stuff.
Callie 05-28-2008, 06:31 PM DD had one when she was taking antibiotics and the doctor said to get lotromin or just any antifungal cream. It should clear up in a day.
ilovekale 05-28-2008, 06:37 PM my neice had one when she was like two months old. poor thing. lol. they used antifungal cream on her too and it went away pretty fast.

See, this is a huge thing we're trying to work on right now also. She sometimes complains about it "hurting" down there and sure enough I'll look and it'll look inflamed b/c I can tell she hasn't wiped well enough. She does know how to wipe, we work on it constantly and she's *usually* good about it, but she gets lazy sometimes and just doesn't do it well enough. Then she ends up being irritated for a day or two. I never had this problem with Jaxon, obviously... potty training was SO much easier with him! :lol
We did skip the bubble bath tonight though, just in case it's related to that. Thank you so much to everyone who helped me out with this!
JKirstiH 05-28-2008, 08:27 PM At the pediatrics office I worked at it happened often with little girls in diapers/pull ups. Most moms gave their kids more yogurt daily and oatmeal baths. If it got really bad then meds from the doc:)
amazinggrace 05-28-2008, 08:33 PM Bubble bath can be a major culprit, it usually leads to UTI's not yeat infections. It starts out just being uncomfotable though. I hope she feels better soon:)
Lizim1981 05-28-2008, 08:37 PM Katie gets at least one a month. She is just insanely prone to them, has been since birth.
Keep her out of her diaper as long as possible.
No bubble baths.
Eat lots of yogurt
Try to cut down on sugar and NO MUSHROOMS!
You can put the monistat cream on her, but just the outer cream, not the stuff that goes in your vagina.
If it doesn't clear up in a day or two take her in.
Midge.T 05-28-2008, 08:42 PM Ditto on the wiping thing. A friend of mine with two girls, the youngest of which is now 4, said that they went through a time when they got irritated down there from not wiping correctly.
It could be a combo between this and the soap. Soap used to get me as a kid, too.
angies367 05-28-2008, 08:52 PM Honestly, I would take her in since it's the first one. If she gets more then you'll know how to treat it - direct instructions from the doctor.
But, Lizim's advice sounds pretty legit too. And, I agree with everyone's suggestions on the wiping. From front to back! Kids always are in a rush to play, but make sure they know to wipe until the TP is clean.
Potatocup 05-30-2008, 08:38 AM DD had one a little while ago and the doctor said we didn't have to take her in (we called) unless it didn't go away within a week. She advised us to use a mixture of Lotrimin, anti-itch cream and diaper rash cream. it cleared it up and it was really bad.
Brandi 05-30-2008, 08:43 AM Well, we stopped with the bubble bath and used a little cornstarch down there to keep her dry, and no complaints! She seems fine now. So, I don't know if it was the bubble bath or a combo of that and not wiping well enough, but it seems like it's all cleared up. Thanks for all of your advice. I feel like it's always SOMETHING! :lol
navypeach 05-30-2008, 09:02 AM My kids have had yeast infections before. Our doctor gave us a prescription for nystatin ointment to put on it. That cleared it up in a few days.
LeeLou 05-30-2008, 09:52 AM My daughter recently had one, and diaper rash cream did not work (btw, she did not have the discharge either). They gave her some antibotics for her and a cream that had a mild steroid in it
Rain. 05-30-2008, 09:54 AM When Lyric had one a few months ago Dr just told me to feed her yogurt. Cleared up in a day or so.
