View Full Version : adult food for babies?
Jennie 05-28-2008, 04:51 PM Madison refuses to eat cereal now, whether it's plain or a mix it with something else. I started giving her meats and she will only eat chicken and turkey and that's on a rare occasion when she does. I give her some Little Puffs. She loves her fruits and veggies, but I'm not sure if she's eating enough.
What kind of adult food do you give your kiddos when they don't have many teeth? I've given her mashed potatoes and I'm gonna get some jello when I go to the store, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank.
ETA: She's still getting her bottles of formula as well.
Jennygirl 05-28-2008, 04:53 PM She should still be getting most of her stuff from either breast milk or formula still...
I feed one table spoon of fruits or veggies three times a day with a bottle.
Jennygirl 05-28-2008, 04:53 PM I make his food and I only do fruits and veggies right now.
airmanssweetie 05-28-2008, 04:55 PM Hmm taters, smashed veggies... anything soft... have you tried the cereal in the jars? DS NEVER ate the boxed kind...

Yeah, she's still getting plenty of formula. I forgot to add that.
And I haven't tried the cereal in the jars yet - we got 3 boxes from WIC she won't eat.

airmanssweetie 05-28-2008, 05:00 PM def try the jar cereals! we only gave jack the cereal from the bag/box in his bottle at night for reflux.
Jennie 05-28-2008, 05:16 PM How old is she?
Almost 8 months and she has 2 teeth.
ellie is 9 months old. she is offered the breast until she stops drinking and then eats pretty much whatever we're having, only super mashed/chopped and unseasoned. she does not even have a full tooth yet but loves to "chew" with her gums. she absolutely refuses baby food or anything pureed, except for sweet potatoes and apples.

one tablespoon? that's not even a jar? :puzz
Jennygirl 05-28-2008, 05:21 PM Thats what I read a serving size is...If you read some of those containers, it says one container is more than one serving.
jm_joslin 05-28-2008, 05:23 PM Mashed Potatos are a good food for babies. Anything that can be blended is also a good alternative.
a tablespoon is like 2 bites for ellie. :rofl
Jennygirl 05-28-2008, 05:26 PM I am thinking about upping it...He usually gets full after that...Although when I give him peaches I give him two servings...
rosebud* 05-28-2008, 05:29 PM I used to have to mix the rice cereal with fruit, that was the only way the kids would eat it. and they hated the rice mainly they ate the oatmeal one.
Michelle 05-28-2008, 05:30 PM Cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, pasta.
yea, i don't really go by serving size - if she is still interested with the food and eating, i keep feeding her. babies know when they are full LOL
Cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, pasta.
pasta, yes. the other 4 are no-nos before age 1.
Mommy2Bailey 05-28-2008, 05:51 PM Bailey eats yogurt, jello, applesauce, taters, and tonight she ate spaghetti

They shouldn't be given cow's milk before age 1. But unless there's a history of allergies, they can have the other 4, from 8 mos on.
Heather 05-28-2008, 06:29 PM I always went by the rule if it can be easily smashed between two fingers then its ok to give to a baby. A baby thats old enough to eat of course.

but cottage cheese and cheese and yogurt have cow's milk? :puzz and i read something about not giving tofu to babies but i could be mistaken.

I think cottage cheese and yogurt are more broken down. There are several sites that say its ok to give babies yogurt and cottage cheese.

That's what I do. Sometimes it's a couple bites, but usually it's more, especially if it's pears or peaches.

Jennie 05-28-2008, 07:22 PM I was told nothing milk based before age 1, so no yogurt and the things of the like
Steph* 05-28-2008, 07:30 PM This might help.

As long as there are no known allergies you can totally do yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese etc. :yes

DakotaCowgirl 05-28-2008, 11:05 PM My DS was 10 months and eatting jumbalya. Our nurse on base told us to just make sure the food was soft and give it to them. DS wouldn't eat anything baby food except for some veggies and fruit. the rest was a nope.
They will gum the food if they want it. Small pieces and watch them.
Jennie 05-29-2008, 12:31 AM Well I bought her some of the Oatmeal cereal from WIC and she was all about that, without any extra food. Now she's eating some Ramen. (Actually, she's making a mess)
Thanks ladies!
Ashnbri 05-30-2008, 10:11 AM When bri was 8m and had teeth we gave him those steamed vegetables that we eat, bread sometimes with apple butter or cream cheese on it, some fruit in can's...like pear halves and pineapple chunks. Banana and cheerios. uhm..cheese cubes, plain pasta, plain burger..etc. she should be able to handle it well if it is in small enough pieces. And keep trying the foods that she has stopped or doesn't really seem to like because eventually they will take them. DS hated baby food for the longest time but after a few more tries he loves it.
