We used to have a member whose ex husband was/is stationed there. And they had a big 6.1 earthquake today. But that's all I have as far as info goes. :lmao

Wow, that's funny you posted this bc I was in my dry cleaner's today and they had Navy brochues out (random bc we're in N. Houston), and it mentioned living in Iceland. I was like "Wtf? A base in Iceland? I had no idea!" :teehee Yeah, I have nothing to add to this topic, I just thought that was ironic lol :P

They either closed the base or are in the process of closing it. Amy (sailorspride) could give you more info, she had neighbors that came from there when we were in MS.

My dh did a 6 month deployment there. One thing that sticks out is incredible winds they have there. All of the vehicles there have socks to tell you what direction to park. In my dh's short 6 months there he saw a guys hood get totally flipped backwards and another guy blew the door backwards on the duty van...with a huge orange wind sock on the van:dunno Navy didn't take too kindly to the "incident" either.

oh yeah and I can't remember but I think when my dh was there it was night for most of the time. They were only having a few hours of daylight a day. I will have to ask him again to be sure.

My DH was stationed there for 18 months. It is such a crap place, at least we think so. The wind is awful and the food is even worse. The Blue Lagoon is really nice though, if you don't mind the smell of sulfur. :)

Aundi, you are right about the daylight. 1/2 the year it is 18 hours of day and 1/2 the years its about 18 hours of night.

Windy there, etc. This is reminding me how in Alaska, you have to plug your car in when you run into a store, etc.

Honest comments. Thanks. I was just curious. Iceland was on the news today and got me thinking,,,,there's a base there?! than I wondered what it was like to life there. I'm familiar with The Blue Lagoon, didn't know it smelled like sulfur though. Did you go in??

That base has been closed for awhile for Navy, it used to be a NATO base but now only the AF has a few guys there (and planes.) I guess they patrol the area?

DH as been there several times as well, for deployments, prior to it's closing.

No problem! I will say that their crime rate is almost non existant. And that's a pretty big positive. We did go in the lagoon. It's kinda nifty. They give you this packet of lotion to put on before you get in, the lotion mixed with the water does amazing things for your skin. And it's wicked hot, but in a really nice, soothing way. You can get away from the really heavy sulfur smell if you move away from the rocks.

honey, there's probably no crime rate b/c of that drastic wind and short day time hours :teehee

I wanna go to the Blue Lagoon. Ohhhh someday........
