Okay so I was just introduced to this song about 20 min ago by a friend.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-8bar2homQ
There are so many vids. I choose this one because it's just the song and lyrics.

My friend says that this song is so valid and an eye opener.
To me it is sad and shows only bad view points and not good things that go on in our Country.
My mom listened and said that it sums up everything.
DB says he hates this song because "Bush has done so much good things"

Your view?

(Putting here because I am not sure how people will take this.. so best to be in a section where if a debate does happen it is safe)

I love the song. And even tho I am far from a Bush supporter I'm not sure I agree with her entirely.

I personally like this song a great deal. Please don't blast me for it. I guess that it just sums up what I think people in politics think- not just Bush. I think that sometimes we pass over the people who need our help. I've spent too many summers working on impoverished reservations and in slums to be ignorant to the poverty levels in some of these areas and the poor education systems that keep area kids in the same hell hole to repeat the circle. I'm not saying we give out money to every man, woman and child, but to those who are truly trying to make an honest living for themselves and their family.

"Dear Mr. President"
(feat. Indigo Girls)

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?

I like the song a lot but then again I listen to James McMurty and his stuff is a whole lot more in yo face then even this song.

I'm watching heroes right now (:P) but I read the lyrics Green~mammy put up... I really like the lyrics... no, it doesn't show the GOOD side to the president... but right now, our country wants CHANGE... our country isn't happy with the bad... and feels it outweighs the good.

I think any good Bush has done is far outweighed by all the crap he has put us through as a nation, and especially as military families. I believe a lot of it was unwarranted.

That being said, the song comes off like a junior high girl's journal entry...I think it's lame. :shrug

i think you just summed it up:agree

i personally think that govement needs to get of its high horse and turn this county of ours around... better our economy, healthcare, education, work force and get on board with alternative ways of "fueling" this nation and remove us from foreign depencany.

there are some many ways of proving america with the electicity and gas that we need... come on there is nothing wrong with supporting our nations farmers with proper wages and inturn use the surplus crop to turn it into use fuel to power many of our products we use daily... there is nothing wrong with finding techonolgy that will co-exist with the use of corn oil....

sorry i get flustured talking about policits:vent,... cuz to those big oil companies and shareholder its all about the MONEY!!!! they rather make a pretty buck than help our economy... its sad and :unlove

I really like the song, though I don't agree with every single line. For me, it's not specifically to Bush, it's just to our country's president, whomever he may be...I know she wrote it for Bush, but it's how it hits me I guess.
I think some of the words are perfect, but the fact that a pop start wrote it just doesn't really rub me right, especially at the end with the 'let me tell you 'bout hard work' babble, and the examples she uses.
She's 'speaking' for the country, I suppose...but idk. I have different opinions obviously LOL.

I like the song. I agree with it. I thought it was very well done and that it had some damn valid points. I think it's about time that some "mainstream" singers actually wrote something with a point.

And, for the record, I'm not fussy for Pink or her music in general.

ETA: And I'm with Wicked, only I'll go on to add, "What good side?"

I think its a great song the represents a lot of people feelings right now
I think the best part of this song is that it can be directed to ANY and EVERY President that has had to deal with poverty, unemployment, war, and education during their term.
and it asks some serious question; how does an policy maker come to terms with the fact that his actions have claimed more than 4,000 lives?
This questions that she is asking are not anything new. Citizens have been asking these questions since the birth of our country.
We want our Our President and Policy Makers to take responsibilities for their choices and actions.
This song address real issues within our society, Regardless of wether you like Bush or not, this song does create awareness of some of the problems with our government policy...

Hey folks. I'm home, and don't wanna threadjack, but I've never heard this song. Read those lyrics though. Just a question:

What do any of those lyrics have to do with the president? How is ANY of that "his" fault? How can he be blamed? Is it simply easier to roll up all the "injustice" in the world into a single political title?

Sounds to me like people are blaming the owner of McDonald's because some kid threw a french fry on the floor.

So let me get this straight:
1. The ghetto USED to have money, but now it doesn't and it's THIS presidents fault?
2. Single moms used to not have to work, but now they have to have two jobs and it's THIS presidents fault?
3. There were no convicts in prison before but now there are and it's THIS presidents fault?
4. Military VOLUNTEERS didn't die in combat before but now they do and it's THIS presidents fault?
5. Oil prices were always low and now they're not and it's THIS presidents fault?
6. America didn't look after it's own capitalist interests before but now they do and it's THIS presidents fault?
7. Every single child graduated school and now they don't and it's THIS presidents fault?
8. Religious factions used to not kill each other and now they do and it's THIS presidents fault?

This may come as a bit of a shock to the younger generations, but Americans have been doing this stuff for YEARS. We didn't just start going over to the Gulf to monitor oil trafficking - we've been doing that since the 70's (if not sooner covertly). The ghetto has always been poor, single moms have always worked two jobs, convicts have always been in prisons and gay has never been widely accepted.
Let's start pointing fingers in the direction that deserves it.

Where does the song blame him for all of that? I didn't see it say anywhere that he is the sole cause of it. The song just asks if he cares. I can tell you, from my point of view, it doesn't seem like he does... :dunno

His very public stance on gay marriage (which is consistent with his religious beliefs), the No Child Left Behind program, the deaths of servicemembers in a war that most people don't agree with.. sounds incredibly like a very recent and mostly unpopular president.

The song is asking if he would be capable of explaining the his actions and decisions in a one on one environment with a "concerned" party. I don't see the words asking for some direction with public services and welfare reform policies - I see the writer telling the President that he has failed and wants to know if he even cares about it.

ETA: Sounds to me that the writer wants the president to explain his actions or inactions.

Yes, exactly. She is telling him she thinks he has failed, not that every problem in America is his fault and things were perfect before him. That was my only point. ;)
