My fiance is saying that when they eventually get back from deployment they may "surge" a few months after. What does that mean???

It's an "unscheduled deployment".

They go back out for a "mini" deployment for about 4 months or so. That is what my DH is on right now. The Nimitz battle group had gotten home back in September I believe and they were home about 4 months before going on surge.

Last time my DH "surged" it was supposed to be 5 months and ended up being 6.

Well, our wedding is sometime in btw when they should be home from regular deployment and then when they could possibly surge. Is that bad?!?!?! Do they do underways and all that workup crap before a surge too???

They'll be home 4-6 months then go back out for 4 months...yes they'll be having work ups because I know something will have to be fixed on the boat so they'll have to go back out.

Oh god! Great!! I swear, I'm doing all this wedding planning shit for nothing! I have the strangest feeling that it's all gonna fall through in the end! :sadeyes

just make sure he puts his leave chit in for it right away when they get home if not when they hit their last port so that it won't.

It is a unplanned deployment, "normally" they are about 4 months. Dh did one after his first deployment and it turned into a 6 month deployment.

They treat it as if it is another deployment. So whatever you had to go through with the "real" deployment than you have to go through with the surge.

I guess I am learning something from this thread to, I know my SO is deployed right now, and then when they get back it will be "underways" and workups and then a surge. .............I just called it a mini deployment for aprox 4 months. It really is so hard to plan anything, i know because I am trying to plan a trip for us back to the UK and I am not even gonna bother untill prolly a month before they come home from this one.

But like the other ladies said, its best for him to get his leave sheet in as early as possible.

The surge my Dh's ship did last year was about 2 months long. I know that next year at some point they are gong on a 3 month surge.
