Have you ever seen this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YT9q4DIFNw
and what do you think of it and the method.

I have 3 kids and my two boys were fish at very young ages. We went to the pool today and I had Annabelle under the water and trying to float her on her back. I haven't so much taught her that way but I think its good for them cause if they ever fell into a pool or pond they would be able to at least respond to it.
Do you teach your kids to swim or do swim lessons for them? If so what age were your kids good swimmers?

i'm almost 27 years old & i cannot swim at all. if you had me in a pool like in the vid, i'd totally sink & die.

i've seen a few vids of small children swimming & it just boggles my mind how they can be taught survival swimming like that.

I saw the guy who teaches it on the Today show a while back, he had babies in the pool and they did really well. ( although I will say that he recommends not DYI but to go to someone trained to teach that says it takes sometimes as long as a month)

I can imagine it does. I'm thinking my daughter is almost to old to learn that method now. I am good at teaching my kids to swim and am a very confident swimmer but I think that method they do is good and with the clothes on like they show.

I don't know.. that video made me feel uncomfortable. :dunno

We did put Riley in swim lessons.. not sure what technique they used, but it wasn't that. :lol They have the kiddos swimming so early! Seeing an 18 month old swim across a pool is quite a sight! :lol

actually he had 2 year old learning it. But he was saying how helpful it was since the child could float on their back if they ever fell in the pool. If i had small babies I would probably look into doing something like that.

My DH can swim but he can't float like that either. Its funny cause I can be a klutz running and stuff and hes the opposite in the pool. When he has swimming for PT hes like I'd rather run a marathon than do pt swimming. Hes said he will leave the swim lessons for me teaching her how to swim.
My dad had me in the pool at 5 with a scuba tank in our pool so I just have grown up being in the water and so far all my kids are like that too. The lifeguard even said today that my daughter seemed very relaxed in the pool.

Wow I will have to see if they do that somewhere here. Actually I think the base taught something like that last year but we missed it. Will have to see again.

I will put my babies in those lessons where they teach them to float. If you watch those videos, those babies are fine, and more importantly - if they ever accidentally end up in water they'll be ALIVE.

I never took those kind of swim lessons but i did take them. I still have my certificates for completeing the superman float, the butterfly float, the tadpole, doggie paddle, and my graduation from the little squids swim class :teehee I starting taking at 4 years old and have always been an excellent swimmer.

DS takes lessons....She has DH take him around on his back for some of the class and he kicks and kicks...We wanted to start him early in lessons, there are some older kids in the class who can swim like the dickens...

My kids learned to swim when we moved to Hawaii. They were 3 and 7. They learned on their own from daily trips to the Hale Koa! :lol I am putting DD in lessons this summer though, so she can learn proper swim strokes and such.

those aren't really swimming lessons they are to make sure if a young child falls into a pool they don't drown and are able to stay above water and call for you so you can get to the child. :shrug. http://www.infantswim.com/company/index.html this is the website with the technique and where the classes are. My mom really wants us to do it since we have a pool at our new house but we are just going to put a fence up and have an alarm as well as have up high door locks so he can not get out without us and then have Dh teach him since he used to teach it.

I think it's a good method because if they fall in they can learn to flip themselves over to their backs until someone can come and get them. I haven't taught this to my kids, but I think it's a good idea. My kids will start swimming lessons at the YMCA this summer.

I can't see the video because I am at work and they banned you tube here :(

I probably won't put DD in swim lessons. Last year, right after she turned 2, she was doggy paddleing accross the pool on her own. She doesn't want any help. I think she will be fine on her own along with my help. She loves the water.
