My cat knocked over the fish tank Saturday. I soaked up the water and open the window so the carpet could dry. Today the whole downstairs STINKS. I used the steam cleaner with the pet odor control shampoo this morning. Now my carpet smells like a stinky lake.
What can I do?

I'm having a similar problem. My bathroom flooded & soaked some of my carpet. I sucked most of the water up with my carpet cleaner but it smells a little now. I hope I don't have to replace my carpet.

You can try some baking soda on it to soak up the odors. Put quite a lot on there and leave it until it's dry then vacuum it up. Repeat a second time if necessary
Unfortunately that may not work since the water has worked it's way down into the carpet pad. If that is the case then you may have to have the carpet pulled and replace the carpet underneath.

try one of those "pet fresh" carpet sprinkles that you let set & then vacuum up.

Just be aware that those Pet Fresh are basically baking soda with a very strong flowery or other type scent and can be very overpowering.

Go and get a carpet cleaner, some fabreeze fabric refresher and some of those lysol air freshner automatic spray things.
Our down stairs hallway got flooded a few weeks ago and that's what I did, smells all clean and dandy now.
