So we are going to Las Vegas, NV instead of what we were looking into San Antonio. We got a really sweet deal from a club we are part of and we will be staying here... http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/LASVSGV-Hilton-Grand-Vacations-Club-on-the-Las-Vegas-Strip-Nevada/index.do;jsessionid=D254228CAA122C50D47E12B2FF36A59F.etc42?brand_id=HI&brand_directory=/en/hi/&xch=214049445,TGKYTWNYSS1BKCSGBIYMVCQ

I've never been to Las Vegas so... What is the best time of the year to go there? I know it gets super hot and I think I would like to try to avoid the bad heat. Things to do? places to eat? must? don'ts?

Vegas is a blast! I've visited lots of times over the last 20 years and we even stayed at that same place last year for our 25th anniversary. It's a great suite...and you will LOVE the spa bathtub. :) I think I got the best pedicure of my life at the spa!

As far as eating and sites to see, all the casino/hotels along the strip have great buffets and/or restaurants. The buffets are the best, of course, but it's way too easy to eat too much. The buffets all used to be really cheap but prices have gone up in Vegas just like everywhere else but they're still worth the cost. For a pretty cheap but still decent breakfast/brunch buffet you can go to the Sahara. It's only about 2 blocks from the hotel and that's where we stayed when we took my daughter for her 21st birthday. We had a blast...and they still have the nickel slots and last year they still had the $2 blackjack table though we've heard it's a $5 table now.

Another relatively low cost buffet is at Palace Station. It's not directly on the strip but close to the Sahara on Sahara Blvd. Some of my favorite buffets/restaurants are in the Excalibur, Bally's, Horseshoe Binions on the old strip, Rio's & Treasure Island.

As far as sites to see you can pick any/all of the casinos along the strip and spend hours or even days in each. You have to see the watershow at the Bellagio at night, also the volcano at the Mirage...again at night, and the pirate show at Treasure Island. There are moving statues in the Forum Shops at Ceasars. The animals, etc in MGM Grand are wonderful, the art museums in the Wynn & the Venetian are pretty good, Paris Las Vegas has an indoor shopping area with cobblestone streets & wrought iron street lamps, and interesting characters doing little shows etc along the way. Shark Reef in Mandalay Bay is pretty cool too. If you're one of those that collects Hard Rock Cafe t-shirts from around the world you'll want to visit the Hard Rock in Vegas, though it's off the strip too. And there are a whole bunch of hotels along the strip I didn't even mention.

As for shows, you can pick among 3 or 4 different Cirque du Solei venues. They're always wonderful. I've seen Mystere twice and next visit I'm definitely gonna see O. My niece has been to Zumanity twice 'cause she enjoyed it so much...thought that's a bit too racy for this old lady. There's Blue Man Group, Phantom of the Opera, Criss Angel, Le Reve, Cher will be back at Ceasar's starting in August, Wayne Brady, Lance Burton, & tons more. We saw Carrot Top last year and his show was sooooo funny. My face hurt from laughing so hard!!

Thank you so much for all the info!! Lots of places that sound very neat to try!
I LOOOOVE Cirqu du Solei! but I've only visit the one in Orlando so that might be something neat to do since dh has never been to any and I know he would love it!

So you stayed at the same hotel? Was it nice?

Will I need to rent a car if we are only staying for about 4 days?
How far is it from the airport?

What is the best time of the year to go there? We've gone in the winter and in the summer. We have yet to find the perfect time of year.

Things to do? New York New York has a pub inside that looked like a lot of fun. We didn't get to go because we had other plans but when we go back the pub (I don't know the name) will be the first thing to do on my list.

Stratosphere is a must in my book.
Watching the water show at the Bellagio.

places to eat? The buffet at the Rio. Yummers!

Ohh... do I need to rent a car? The hotel is on the strip, whatever that it :dunno I'm guessing is the main street.

Oh gosh I just checked the current temperature there and at 5:25 AM it is 88 degrees :faint I definitely do NOT want to go while it's SOOOO HOT. When does the weather starts getting more comfortable there? nothing higher than low 80's

ily.mmw
06-17-2008, 07:46 AM
im not sure i've gone there several times & it varies as far as the weather goes. it can tend to get really cold there at times, my best experiences in regards to weather would be march through may & september through october, maybe not the very beginning of september because it's still pretty hot.

& as far as renting a car. mccarran airport is not THAT close you can either take a taxi or rent a car, if you're staying on the strip you don't really need a car, inner city traffic sucks anyway & it'll take 15-30 minutes to get anywhere.

Vegas is dry heat! I actually prefer it! It is AWESOME to go swimming when it's like 110° out side! I was there one time and it was 117° out. I don't think the dry heat is as bad as the East Coast with its humidity...LOL!

How far exactly is the airport then? cause most likely then we wont rent a car.

Would it be too bad of a drive?

ily.mmw

ily.mmw

wait scratch that.. i forget how the roads go over there.. so it may be 5-10 miles. MAYBE, shortest distance being about 5 miles but if theres no way and you have to go around then about 10

The airport is about 10 miles away, the time to get there depend on traffic. But you should be able to take a shuttle to and from your hotel. The hotel is actually like a block behind the strip. It's actually on the older side of the strip so you will be doing a lot of walking. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes. Have fun!! We lived there for 4 yrs so feel free to ask any more questions.

That would be a drive!!! My aunt and family live in Salt Lake. Las Vegas is half way between San Diego and Salt Lake.

The airport is close to the strip. There are LOTS of shuttles present. You can even rent a limo to take you to your hotel for like $20. :)

Vegas is fun, there is always something to do. Only takes me about 4 hours to drive there from my house :D, maybe you can visit ME :D LOL.

When you are there, check out Fat Tuesday inside the MGM Grand, they have the bombest jello shots and cherry bombs :yes

If you are a clubbing type of person then I suggest going to Jet at the Mirage (I think that's where it is) and Moon or Ghostbar at the Palms.

Park City is nice but it is a long drive. We just returned from Salt Lake City and came thru Nevada and its a long drive. The roads are fine but theres nothing to see really from the highway. Park City was cool. Really pretty. The main street and all the stores are fun to look at and theres a ride you can go on. Its on the bobsled run I beleive. You take a cart down it. Its a few bucks. I wouldn't spend no more then 2 days max there. Its a long drive for 2 days and with the cost of gas being so high its something to think about. We got gas in Nevada for 4.59 a gallon and in Utah got it at 3.85 but it went up 10cents while we were there..Good Luck.

Theres alot to see in Vegas. Like the Hoover Dam and theres even trips to the Grand Canyon. When DH and I were there for 4 days we didn't have enough time to see everything. Too many shows. Carrot Top is a must. And a fun restaurant is Dick's Last Resort in the Excalibur hotel. You leave all manners at the door LOL...Have fun.
