View Full Version : Passports
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:25 PM I want to get my passport. Just to have. I was looking at the government website and it says to bring proof of US citizenship (I assume a driver's license would work?) and two photos of yourself. Do they mean two photo ID's?
ETA: here's what I'm talking about:
[QUOTE]To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license.{/QUOTE]
RockinMama 06-16-2008, 10:25 PM SSN card, Licence, and BIrth certificate, just in case, i had all 3 when i got mine.
LindsayLin 06-16-2008, 10:28 PM No, they need pictures of you for the actual passport.
Do you have a Rite Aid near you? Go there and they will take the pictures for you. They have to be like 2x2 or some random size. I think they are around $7 for 2 of them. Much easier than trying to do it at home and crop them only to find out the clarity is not clear enough. Some post offices do it too, I believe. :tu
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:29 PM ahh okay. Thank ladies! I don't have my SS card, but I do have my birth certificate and license.
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:30 PM Oh, does anyone know how much it is to get your passport? Not the photo fees, just the passport.
BrittanyJo 06-16-2008, 10:30 PM Yeah, I went to Kinko's and got passport pics
Dani1409 06-16-2008, 10:30 PM I know the AAA office in my town does passport photos for free! If you have one you might wanna check it out. :)
Callie 06-16-2008, 10:31 PM Go to CVS or Rite aid and tell them that you need passport pictures made (also I think that Walmart does them too in their photo store) take those to the passport office along with your driver's license, SS card, and Birth certificate.
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:31 PM Sweet! I'll look into AAA.
Britt, you are amazing.
Callie 06-16-2008, 10:31 PM I think Dh and I paid around $90 a piece for ours
Dani1409 06-16-2008, 10:32 PM The fees when I got mine last year equaled about $90. I paid over $200, but that was because I paid to get it expedited.
Callie 06-16-2008, 10:33 PM We didn't get our expedited but the agent put a deadline on there for them and we got ours in about 2 weeks, but I don't think that's normal. Most people wait 13 weeks or so, I think
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:33 PM Thanks ladies!
Do you have to have your SS card? I need to order a new one if so.
Callie 06-16-2008, 10:34 PM I'm not sure if you have to have it, but you may. I would just go ahead and order one anyway
LindsayLin 06-16-2008, 10:35 PM Thanks ladies!

I didn't take mine because my last name is spelled wrong on it. They didn't need it. We just got our new passports this past weekend, it only took 10 days. :wowsers Just put on the form that you are leaving the country in a few weeks. It costs about $90, I believe.
OMG it's Andrea! 06-16-2008, 10:37 PM Thank you so much everyone! :yourock
navygf08 06-16-2008, 10:41 PM If you move to Washington you can get a special license that takes the place of a passport and can get you into Canada with just that. I'm just saying... :giggle

:lol you are awesome!
define 06-16-2008, 11:29 PM I just took the two photos of myself that I had taken at Costco, my birth certificate, and drivers license. It was around $90 and I got in about 2 weeks.
salerine 06-22-2008, 12:42 PM We just got ours in the mail a few days ago. It only took 10 days! The fees where $100. $75 for the passport fee and $25 went to the courthouse where I took my paperwork. Take your birth certificate. You will get it back in the mail. A drivers license does not prove proof of citizenship. Lots of places take passport pictures these days and it only takes a few minutes.
Are you going anywhere fun? We are going to Guam and then to the Azores next spring!

This is not exactly true.
Currently, you do not need a passport to drive into Canada. You would only require your BC and state or federal issued photo ID. So this special license isn't required. But if you fly, you do need a passport. The special license wouldn't suffice. July of 09 you will require a passport to get into Canada by any means of transportation.
Skip the 'special license' and just get your passport. It is always a good thing to have on hand anyway, you never know when you might need it.
sandykay 06-22-2008, 12:55 PM I don't actually know if they will accept ssn card and you licence really is just photo id because you don't have to be a citizen to have those. Your birth cirt will work though. Check out the website and see how much they are

I have my birth certificate but not my social security card, so opposite of what you said :)
flangl18 06-22-2008, 01:13 PM I got my passport at the post office and they did my pictures there. It was right at a $100 for the passport and photos. I had it within about 6-7 weeks.
~*Dawn*~ 07-08-2008, 10:29 PM I had to mail in the application and enclose my birth certificate (but they mailed it back to me with my passport) and the photos they need have to be identical and a certain size (I'd like to say 2x2 but I'm not sure on that!) but many pharmacies and grocery stores have passport photo machines (the one at my grocery store was endlessly broken so I ended up going to a photography store (an acquaintance works there so he charged me a buck, but I think the pics cost about $7 at walmart). Oddly enough, in Japan, they have those passport picture booths in the most random places--on the street wedged between vending machines, for instance...just a weird fact. Anyway, I ended up paying the rush fee so it was about $200 for mine, that's because I needed one asap for a trip to Japan. I think the normal rate is $90. So yeah, those pics, my birth certificate and my drivers license were all I needed.
You can also do the complete application at some of the larger post offices, and get the photos taken right there. You should probably plan to send off for them at least 8 weeks before you really need them, if you're going with regular service (not expedited).
ncampbell43 07-09-2008, 01:13 AM I was gonna recommend the Rite Aid/CVS for the passport pic.
