US Airways to charge $2 for soda, juice, water
http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/95048

Better get used to carrying lots of singles next time you fly. US Airlines is now terminating free drink service. No, not free mini bottles of Jim Beam and cheap Chardonnay, we're talking about all drinks, including soda, fruit juice, coffee, and bottled water, which will soon cost $2 each. Presumably tap water, which may or may not be contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria, will still be free.

The move is the latest way airlines are attempting to fight rapidly rising fuel prices in a disastrous economic climate. In recent months, the extra fees have come fast and furious. First came extra charges for your second piece of luggage, then came a charge for your first bag. That's not to mention extra fees for choosing your own seat, curbside check-in, booking using frequent flier miles, and the cost of the Santa Fe chicken sandwich.

The beverage fee is even more annoying than most, since you can no longer bring liquids through security at airports. You are really at the mercy of buying them on the plane, or at least buying them once you're in the terminal (which is doubtlessly no cheaper than on the plane). Alcoholic drinks will also go from $5 to $7. That's a lot for a can of Budweiser.

The fee goes into effect August 18, leaving plenty of time for the airlines to come up with other fees to nickel and dime their way to profitability. Can pay toilets be far behind?

See that's why I bring an empty bottle and fill it up with water at the airport. That's just crazy that now you have to pay for your drinks. :sigh

Df an I buy stuff before we board the plane. It's still expensive, but it's more than they offer.

We also buy snacks an pack them in our carry on's for the airport an the flight.

Yup I do the same thing. :) I usually have a ton of snacks in my carry on but now that you have to pay to check even one bag in it's going to be a real pain. :no I've seen people buy McDonalds at the airport and take it onto the plane... ooh it smelled yummy. :lol

Amen.

It's crap that you should have to pay for water. We need it to live... it's just crap to deny someone that.

That is crap and they are completely taking advantage of the fact that you can't carry a lot of things through security anymore.

I never thought of that! Now that you mention it I do feel a little taken advantage.

But there are some nice people who let things slide, Df accidently left a bottle of colone in his jacket pocket when we were coming back from MN an the screener let it go. I don't know if it was because Df's in the military, or the fact I called him my fiance...

Yeah I have a small brown backpack that is pretty much a purse and it can hold quite a bit of snacks and stuff in there. The next time DH and I go to HI I guess we will just take our one carry on each and he will take his laptop and I'll take my brown backpack purse thing. :no It sucks that we can't even take one checked bag for free. :sigh

AIRLINES SUCK!!!

Wow. With this on top of the $25-$50 per bag for regular carry on's, on top of ticket prices, I don't think we'll be able to afford to fly anymore than we would drive with the crazy gas prices! :nutts Yeesh.

I hope they at least give people the whole can of soda and not just the amount they pour into those little glasses. Doesn't matter to me I won't fly with them anymore, I refuse to be nickeled and dimed like that.

Oh my gosh...this is getting ridiculous! I am flying in October and thankfully bought my ticket before the baggage changes, but I will just buy something to eat and drink after I go through security and carry it on with me.

So yeah... won't be flying with them ever!!! With the way they are treating people they are going to start LOSING money.

Don't they HAVE to provide at least SOME kind of water for patrons to drink for certain lengths of flight times?

(not just to you; you're not the only one who expressed this)

Sooooo......... if US Airways' fare for a certain trip is $100 less than any other airline's fare for that trip, you'd still not fly with them just because they're going to charge you for a Coke in flight?

I suspect that all the airlines will move to this. Considering that most people purchased their tickets months or even weeks ago, when fuel was much less expensive, they need to cut corners wherever they can. Not saying it's good; frankly, it sucks, but I'd rather see them do this than slap an additional fee on me when I try to board.

I also think that airlines will start to work more closely with their codeshare airlines so that planes are flying full as much as possible. I think that we'll start seeing cancellations of flights when there are two or three different options for getting from Point A to Point B, and passengers will be re-seated on another flight. It benefits no one if three planes leave from and arrive at the same places, within a reasonable amount of time, and they're each less than half full.

Too bad for me I can't take a train to visit my family in HI. :teehee Though DH and I aren't planning on going back home for a couple years. We just got back last month so we are good for now. :)

Forget nickel and diming us--it's past that. The empty bottle is a good idea, but I'm leary of drinking fountains and their cleanliness. I hate U.S. Air as it is. I've had way too many bad things happen with them. Their staff has always been incredlibly rude. Sucks all the way around.

I just went to check the flight info as my hubby used them (I hate this airline and I thought I made that clear to hubby. I know he's tyring to save a buck, but never again.) So, here's what I found about bringing empties to fill up:

***
Pack your 3.4 oz. (100ml) containers in a single, clear, one-quart zip-top plastic bag. Empty containers (that could contain liquids) are not allowed; and neither are partially used larger containers.
Only one one-quart plastic bag is allowed per passenger, and the contents of the bag must fit comfortably inside.

*****

Fuckers.

I know other airlines are sure to follow but I specifically avoided US when I booked my parents trip out here for September. Greedy bastards.

I'll be the odd one out. I would rather pay for a beverage and get the whole can. I want the airline to furnish a safe, properly maintained airplane. If they have to cut corners it needs to be food, drink, etc. and not parts and service!

My sister is a FA for Delta, I know they do not do that. That is just out right stealing! lol.

Just one little comment about the sodas ...you can ask for the whole can. My husband and I do it when we fly and they give us the whole can. Usually I do it when its a cross country flight over three hours but yeah ...they give you the whole can if you ask .

I completely agree with this. The airlines are trying to stay in business. They didn't just up and decide, "let's find a way to fuck with our customers." They want fares to stay competitive and the only way they are going to keep costs down is by lowering expenses. It's no different than a household budget.

That really sucks. I'm about to book a flight for next month to see db at his graduation and right when we think we have all the money we need they raise the prices on stuff and we need more! So rediculous but he's paying for it :) haha but still
