Ever since we got Brownie, Dh has wanted to breed her because she would make beautiful puppies and we could sell the pups for a pretty penny. (She's a pure bred brindle pit bull) I always said no and this was my reasoning: There are so many dogs, especially pit bulls, sitting in shelters waiting for homes, so I'm not gonna add to it on purpose. We got her spayed a couple months ago and people are still giving me shit about not breeding her. Apparently people just don't understand how many pit bulls are out there that need good homes.

Am I wrong in my thinking?

You were absolutely not wrong. I'm glad you spayed her. You should tell them to take a trip through several of the local shelters. Most of the dogs are pit bulls or some mix of pit bull. Thank you for not contributing. These animals need to get homes first before they are euthanized because there isn't enough room in the shelters to keep them. It's so sad to look at all of their pictures online.

i don't think you are wrong. we have a pure bred champion line schnauzer people wanted us to breed her. Personally I am not able to handle financially the cost of it. Not to mention it would do no good to just breed her for the purpose of making money. I spayed her at 6 months. I tell people if you want to breed puppies get your own dog and do it. My dog my choice.

Thank you! I heard on the news awhile back that 75% of dogs in shelters are pit bulls in the San Francisco Bay area. I think they said more than half of them get euthanized. (It was a while ago, forgive me if my numbers aren't right). Once I saw that, there was absolutely no way I would breed her.

NO, you did the right thing... you're right about there already being enough dogs but the other issue is, you're not an experiences breeder.

Yup. It's still the same deal pretty much in any major city... even in minor cities. Sometimes I like to browse the shelter websites to see what cute dogs they have. Most of them are pit bull mixes and pure bread pit bulls. It's so sad.

You were absolutely RIGHT in your thinking. I only wish more people were able to be as thoughtful about the whole idea. I, for one, applaud your decision!

I just dont see the first point...Just because a dog looks like a certain way does not mean that the puppies will be as pretty or cute as they are...My aussie is a singleton puppy from two champion aussies who are tri colors and he is not show quality and is blue merele.

There is so much that goes into breeding, is she papered? Are her eyes and hips checked? Is the person willing to put the cost into it and the time?

Believe me, a lot of our friends are breeders and they do mostly show dogs, and they have yet to see a profit from it.

EXCELLENT point(s) - done correctly, breeding/raising a litter to weaning is not a profitable endeavor.
