I'm considering moving there end of July early August. My Dh is currently there for AIT, and I think the best thing for our family is to spend as much time togehter as possible. We would have alittle time in the evenings during the week and we would have all day on saturday & sundays with my husband. I'm scared about moving there, but I think it's for the best.
I was just wondering if anyone lives near the area and could give me some pointers on where to look for an apartment or a house. I don't plan on taking all of our stuff out there...just the basic things we need..clothes, toys, kitchen stuff. I'm hoping to find a furnished place, but if I don't we will make due with what we take. We will probably only live out there 4 months at the longest, so I'm hoping by putting my hubby on the lease with the military clause and all that we will be able to get out of it after the 4 months.

I'm trying to look for a place in the Grovetown, GA area. It seems like it would be a good place and is close to the base. Can anyone help me out? Tell me about any certain areas to avoid?

Thanks!

i moved with my DH during AIT, the drill SGT are not nice to you and they are harder on them. Another thing is that when you all are ready to PCS you have to pay the mileage difference from home on record to your current location, you can call you local transportation office to help explain it better. Other than those to thing it was totally worth seeing him!!!!! good luck

I moved to Ft. Gordon area while my DH was in AIT. Because he was prior service (AF to Army), he didn't have the same rules as the new soldiers in AIT. He was able to live with us while in AIT.

We lived in a furnished "suite" outside Gate 5 in Hephzibah. It was a one bedroom, one bath, with full kitchen and living room. We had two teenagers living in the living room and pregnant me was in the bedroom with DH. It was crowded, the furniture was old and broken and we were paying $700 a month to rent it, on a month to month basis. I wouldn't recommend the place to ANYONE.

I have other friends here that also moved to the area while their husbands were in AIT. They only saw there husbands for an hour week day evenings (and they couldn't leave the barracks area during the visit) and sometimes they were given weekends, but not always. I think they actually had little time with their families...but I think they were happy that they got any time.

Two of them lived in unfurnished townhomes in Hephzibah...they were in a not so great part of town. Had their kids of been school aged, they probably wouldn't have moved there because the schools are HORRIBLE. The townhouses were spacious and in decent condition. I visited them a few times. I'm not sure what they paid a month to rent though.

Another friend lived in unfurnished apartments near the mall. She loved the place and it was in a better part of town. Again, I don't know what she paid to rent.

I think the bottom line is are you willing to live in stressed, tight, and maybe unfavorable conditions for 4 months just to have a little time with the hubby? I was, and so we did.

In retrospect, I wished I had at least rented a small uhaul and moved bedroom furniture and at least a couch and TV and just rented an unfurnished 2 bedroom apartment so we'd of not of been so cramped.

When AIT finished and we got orders, we drove back to our home of record (Texas) and did a DITY move. We made money doing a DITY move. We weren't paid anything for driving ourselves back to our home of record, but we did get paid to move from Texas to Ft. Gordon (we ended up permanent party at Ft. Gordon after AIT at Ft. Gordon...LAME).

Grovetown is a good area to look in. It's close, not too pricey I don't think, and a nice area. I don't know anything about rentals in that area though...but I'm sure you could search online and find some stuff.

i dont know what everyone else said cause for once i didnt read all the replies before i answered. haha BUt.
i moved to augusta when my husband was in AIT too. He had been there for about..2 months when i moved out there. How long has he been in AIT? you can send me a message if you dont wanna post it. I made the choice to move there because i was pregnant with our first baby. It was the best choice i ever made. I, on the other hand, brought ALL our stuff to our apartment i got. Then when he got PCS'd (which. sadly for us...meant staying at fort gordon. BLEH haha) they payed for us to move all of our stuff to where they were moving us. Yes...in the end..they ended up paying me back for moving there on my own basically. haha good luck with everything. We lived at marks church commons and i LOVED it!!!! its an amazing complex.

haha ok ill add more cause christy mentioned me in her post above mine! HAHA thanks christy :D
she is very right. the only time we got to spend together, AFTER HE WAS PHASE 5 PLUS (thats VERY important to keep in mind. theres phase 4--cant do ANYTHING pretty much. phase 5--they can wear civis and can go off base on the weekends but cant stay overnight. and then phase 5 plus which means they can go off base from friday until sunday night.) but again..like she said..they dont always give them the weekends off. if their sgt is mad about somethin all they have to do is say "nop.e everyone stays here" and thats it. theres no argument. so its very off and on about being ablet o see them or not. you can come see them but they still cant leave and they still have formations. Its rough but..like i said...i thought it was completely worth it. Oh. and he cant drive. most of the companies wont let their soldiers drive anyways thanks to an incident that happened when my husband was in AIT. BUT. it was worth it :D

oh yeah. and the apartment was, again, marks church commons. we payed 550 a month. you dont have to pay a deposit since your military and they will let you do a 6 month lease and your able to break it as long as you have orders. they even let us break our lease even though we were still gunna be living in georgia. haha it was pretty awesome!

thanks for the info, i actually sent you a pm. as far as the phase thing goes, i know about that, he should be phasing up to a phase 5 next wednesday! and he also said that a kernel just signed to get rid of the phasing process. As soon as all that paperwork goes through they will have Black & Gold phase...that's it..they just have to be there 4 weeks then they are phased up and get the same freedoms that a +5 phase would get now.

My hubby went to AIT at fort gordon and I think it would be a waste of time and money because AIT isn't that long and he is not gurentee to be about to leave post on weekends and they had random times like basic that they would wake them up and they would have to go in the field for days....I would wait and save the money and enegry until he has his duty station

thanks, but i actually posted this back in June.
I didn't move there, I just went out and stayed in a hotel for 3 weeks and then came back home. If the soliders are phase 5 or 5+ they do get to leave post every weekend unless for some reason they get their phase badge taken away.

He has never had that happen (the text i bolded)
