View Full Version : Rabies Shot Question
Caimbrie 06-24-2008, 10:21 AM We didn't realize until yesterday that Emmie is due for her rabies shot by the 27th. We just got the card form her vet in Maine yesterday about it. We are going to try to get her in today to get it, but if we can't today then it wont be until next week... If she goes over a few days past the date it's due, will they make a big deal out of it?
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 10:35 AM Nope they shouldnt!!
If you take her to a banfield they probably will because they do that if you are a day late...Thats my experience with working with clients that have gone there.

Bleh, that's where Tony wants to take her because they have the cheap shot workshop things on tuesdays. I really hope he's done with school early enough today to bring her. I'd do it, but I don't want to load up all 3 kids and the dog and drive a half hour just to go sit there in line for a damn rabies shot.
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 10:51 AM She should be ok! just have him take her reminder card with him!
If she is due for that vax, what about her distemper?

That's all it says she's due for :shrug How often do they need the distemper?
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 10:58 AM it should be every year until they have had three, and usually after three some vets will go eveyr three years, but that depends on the vet and the area you live in. Just like some states make rabies an every year shot.
Caimbrie 06-24-2008, 11:00 AM Maybe Maine doesn't requite it yearly, I'll have to look at when she got it last year. What age do they give the distemper to a puppy? Emmie got her rabies shot right at 16 weeks.
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 12:18 PM It was a series, it can be started at 8 weeks, the last one of the series is usually given at 16 weeks and that one is always good for a year (the first one).

I asked Tony about it and he said she got a different kind of distemper that is supposed to last longer? I have no idea :lol
mrsfaller 06-24-2008, 12:23 PM just don't tell the banfield people its up. just say she's due for a new one. but i personally wouldn't advise anyone go to banfield. i've worked next to them in a couple of different locations, and there is no way i will ever take my pets there again. i had poodle neutered there and his sac filled with infectious blood and they gave him antibiotics that he was allergic to and i told them what was happening, and they didn't care! someone else old me he was allergic to the antibiotics! his little sac was all swollen and tender for weeks. poor baby! so yeah, i hate them!
rosebud* 06-24-2008, 12:31 PM I wouldn't say she is overdue, just say she needs her rabies shot.
amazinggrace 06-24-2008, 12:47 PM Just so you know...this is SC law for dogs:
VETERINARY CARE
A PUPPY NEEDS:
Medicine to deworm it starting at 6 weeks
DHLPPC shot against Distemper, Parvo, etc. at 6-8, 10-12, and 12-15 weeks (at least twice)
Rabies shot at 13 weeks (SC State Law)
Spay/neuter surgery – ask veterinarian to do this surgery on your pet at the earliest age possible
Heartworm prevention tablets monthly starting at 6-8 weeks
Lyme disease prevention shot (optional)
Bordatella (optional; for dogs being boarded or in other group settings)
Regular applications of flea/tick prevention medicines
AN ADULT DOG NEEDS A YEARLY TRIP TO THE VET FOR:
Annual shots - Rabies (SC State Law) and DHLPPC (“Distemper”)
Fecal check for worms and deworming if necessary
Heartworm check
Lyme disease prevention and Bordatella shots in special circumstances
Regular applications of flea/tick prevention medicine
Aundi 06-24-2008, 12:50 PM In VA and ME the only thing required by law is the rabies. I have never had a vet make any sort of big deal or give me any problems for it being a little late.
Our vet here does 3 year rabies shots as long as your don't let it lapse. If you let it lapse like we did last year we had to have it yearly........this October we should finally be able to get the three year license:D

oh thanks :)
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 01:14 PM Distemper Ive never known to be something you need to have...The only vax that is required is Rabies...
Since emme is so small, do you get them with lepto (distemper)? We didnt give the small dogs lepto, and I dont get my dogs lepto either and they are big dogs...
I think banfield is a total rip off...They make people redo their vax series if someone is like a day late, they give vax for things that dont really work, like lymes.
We had a client that spent over 200 bucks for their dogs because they gave them all of this bull and when they came to our place they were like they really only need two shots?

I have no idea about the lepto. Tony always takes the dogs and gets whatever shots they need. We pass up the optional ones that we don't think the dogs need. Emmie and Lilah did get the kennel cough since some groomers require it, but it was a spray at the vet in Maine. How often do they need that for it to be surrent?
He said he'll be able to get Emmie in today for her Rabies so I'm happy :lol
rosebud* 06-24-2008, 01:24 PM does the base have a vet? it is usually way cheaper to get shots there if that is all they need.
Jennygirl 06-24-2008, 01:27 PM I think that the nasal bordatella should maybe be done every 6 months and the injection can be done yearly...
Aundi 06-24-2008, 01:33 PM We're in SC now and I don't know the law here :lol
Yeah I knew you were in SC. I mainly want to point out that most states only require rabies to be forcible by law. GA and FL are that way also, just to add...

The airforce base does.. but Banfeild has them really cheap during thier worshop. It'll be $15 to get her rabies shot.
