So anything that is a $50 or bigger I put in a box. And brand new bills. Last year I saved $750 this way before lending it out, and when I got paid back I ended up spending it :( This year I have currently just under $400 but Ill be using it towards DH's bday present. I just cant get myself to spend these on just anything.

So whats an unusual way you save money??

We put all of my secret shopper and LejeuneYardsales.com(where we sell stuff we don't want to locals) money in a "piggy bank" container that my husband wrote "Highfill's Travel Money" on.

I have a savings connected to our checking and whatever we have left right before payday goes into it. Most of my paycheck goes into it as well. Then when that savings is up to about 1000 bucks it gets transfered to a high yield savings acct. So far that is what works for me.

I cannot have money around the house, because i end up spending it faster then a check card.

It doesn't add up quickly, but it is a way to gain at least $20 a month.....
When we use our checking account, I round up to the nearest dollar. So like my van payment is $229.03, I sent the correct payment, but I subtract $230 from my ledger. I do it when we go to the store too...so pretty quick, I can gain at least $30 a paycheck.....its no huge savings, but its hidden from us!
Once every couple of months, I deposit $100-$150 into savings, because we've gained that much from doing it.
I also am building up to putting 10% of our check into savings the day we get it. I started at 1% (so yeah....it would be like $14.22 or something, but it was something) and once we paid off a debt, I raised it to 2%....once the next debt gets paid off, we'll move up to 3% (and the rest of the previous debt payment goes to the debt after that)
Yes....it's a big detailed thing, but I enjoy planning it all out and seeing stuff in our savings account.

I have a good ol' blue piggy bank (it is a blue pig!) that all our change goes into. Andrew doesn't notice, but I DO steal his change to put into it. There has to be at LEAST 40 bucks in it... DEFINITELY 30 dollars that I know of for a fact.

It is slow.. but I like weighing my piggy :D

We also have savings accounts that automatically pay themselves from our checking as well.

400bux a month gets put into our thrift savings plan. but thats the only real savings we have. :/ I don't have a steady enough income yet to save money, and my husband is anti savings.

The only way i save money is by not spending it.
I work at marshall's, which is a bad bad thing for me.

I do the same thing I round everything up to the nearest dollar then dump it into savings. ( my own version of keep the change) the big trick i found for us is to have a different bank for savings. It takes at least 3 days for us to get the money so I really have to want/need something that bad to transfer it. I opened an ING account and we put an allotment going there. We also have another savings account that we can't immediately access. and while this is not quirky at all, we do save all our change in a huge water jug.
I also found that having a bills account and a household account is much better for us to save. since we over estimate how much we spend in bills the left over just goes into savings.

I actually just did this. I bank with NFCU and just opened an USAA acct. I am hoping that this will help us a little with all the extra money that we spend. I also have a jar of coins. Its not going to add up to huge amounts of money. I did cash it in one month. It was about a 100 bucks in that jar.

I bank online too, so I just keep an excel spreadsheet going. It works really well for us!

a few ways - i do the large bills in a box thing... but that is more for emergency cash. i don't have that much in there, maybe $200 at this point. i have an automatic transfer into my savings account at the beginning of every month, and at the end if there is anything left over in checking i'll transfer that as well. i save up the change in a bowl, but that is a slow process. when db was still around he used to unload his pockets when he got home before he sat down, so we had change piles all over the house, and i got in the habit of consolidating them! :lol

I like the idea of emptying out the checking account into savings just before pay day.

Right now we have an automatic transfer once a month to our savings from our checking. We also have the Keep the Change program with Bank of America which I really like. We have a container for change as well. We try to throw small bills in there too (anything less than a $20 bill) but we've kind of gotten behind on that. And we rarely use cash.

I put 25% of my income into my savings account, and never spend change. You'd be surprised how quickly quarters and dimes add up :)
