Can yall tell me some GOOD things about Ft Bragg please? And also random need to know info. Do they have new spouse classes?

My SIL is getting married in November :wow and hoping to move to Ft Bragg by December. So anything you can tell me to ease my overprotective big sister mind would be appreciated. I would like to be able to give her a ton of info. They are trying to get on base housing (just her, the dude, and her dog). Umm she will also be transferring to the University of North Carolina at Fayetteville.

Thank you!

I don't like it very much..too much crime for me! We live off base so that part isn't so bad, its a really nice condo. On a side note..I didn't know there was a UNC-Fayetteville?

I don't think there is a UNC-Fay. I know there is Fayetteville State, which is part of the UNC system just like NC-State and what not.

It's a good school, my friend just graduated from nursing school there. :)

Tell her that Raleigh is a gorgeous area, and Raeford, Hope Mills and surrounding areas are pretty nice.

Downtown Fayetteville is :tu

There is a GREAT sushi place near the Reilly Rd. Gate called Sapporo that is NOT busy at all for dinner unlike places on Skibo. And they even give you free Bonsai trees :D!

Well Berk and Loretta are right there so that is a big :tu right there. :D But also there is a lot to do- most chain stuff but stuff none the less- around post and if you can't find what you are looking for in Fayetteville then Raleigh/Durham is only and hour give or take 15 away. The beach is close enough to go without a mileage pass and the mountains aren't to much further away. There are some good parks nearby also. I don't know to much since we live 30 min. north and I work in Durham but those are what I can think of off the top of my head.

I know! I was at State this past year and one of my friends told me we were in the same "UNC system" and that was why we had like basically the same breaks and what not.

I do believe they are going to be putting up a UNC-Hickory in Burke County. That's what I had last heard.

I don't like it here either. The offbase apts prices are rising. We've been here at carlson bay for 2 years and they upped the price on us. If we could, we'd move on base.

It's not bad, downtown Fayetteville is nice and is revitalizing. There are small shops and a lot more pedestrian friendly. Sapparo is great! :) They have a new pedestrian/biking trail near the soccer complex, so that's a nice thing to check out or exercise on. It's also patrolled by police :tu

And FWIW, I live off-post and haven't had any security problems.

SOME GOOD THINGS ABOUT BRAGG/FAY.....I have to think. I have lived here all of 15 yrs. And hubby all his life. So here goes...

Fayetteville....Fayetteville State is a great college for certain programs like nursing, sociology, psychology. Most of the others kinda suck. There are tons of restaurants, but usually pretty crowded. Apartments are priced great....2bdrm security system etc is about $650 and its a gated community. Shopping isnt the best. But it will do. It isn't far from the beach, mountains, or Raleigh. So you can always get away. Traffic does kinda suck. There are some really great gated communities in Fayetteville, but like any other city, there are some really bad areas. But if you want to avoid this, just go to the courthouse and get a crime report for the area you are interested in....then you will know if it is safe or not. Several walmarts, TONS of fast food. Several movie theaters. Not sure what else you are interested in.

Fort Bragg....new housing/remodeled housing is very nice!! They also have GREAT OFF POST Govt housing! It is a crowded post...what do you expect with THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people lol. Two PX's, two commisaries (but do not go on payday). Tons of schools. Several parks, including a Bark park. Skating rink, bowling, tons of gyms. Anything in particular?

I loved it in Fayetteville. You can't go to questionable places at night by yourself though, kind of like any other area with a large-ish population...

Anywhere near the methodist college is a decent place to live, quiet and safe neighborhoods. We loved where we lived, near McArthur and Andrews Commons.

I think they do have a major in something like that. I know they were cancelling some programs. NO JACK IN THE BOX!!! SORRY. Everyone asks me that. Oh, the wait list for bragg...they say it can be a while but a lot of ppl get in anywhere from 1 day-3months. depending on what she likes (bc you can always reject, but go to the bottom of the list) and what she needs (number of bedrooms) or what they offer her.

It depends really for housing. SOmetimes you will be waiting a long time other times they will fit you in sooner. There is about to be a big influx of people moving here which will effect how many will be moving here. BUT that being said Bragg is building ON base apts for single guys. So like barracks only you pay for it..LOL Anyway that will open up alot apts out in town. Our base is cracking down big time on housing and alot are being booted which will open up housing on our base as well.
Schaele- Some of the housing is bad but you should see what they have renovated. It's flipping gorgeous! Plus they now have an off base housing community (gated) which has a kick ass pool. Bragg for sure has better housing now then Pope.

Tell her to try Methodist College too! Or Fayetteville Tech. They have that as well. I'm trying to think of others..

OH OH OH CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY!! UNC-Pembrook is not far at all. It's a straight shot down 90 to Lumberton, about a half hour commute.

He can call now and say he is getting married in Nov. and if shes not moving down there till Dec it wouldn't matter because they would be married by then. You don't want her to live off post but you are saying the info I gave you doesn't matter. Please just trust me on this ,he can call and tell housing what's going on . If one of them doesn't call now they will end up living off post and I don't think they want that and you already said that you don't.

That's what I figured. He is already there but they are married and wont be for 4 more months. I thought she would have to be in DEERs and on his page 2 before hand. I have never lived in housing though. I know I had to be added in order to get the increase in BAH though.

They told me that as long as you're within 90 days of getting orders they can put you on the list. As for the being married thing I'm not 100% sure about all of that. That's why I say its prolly best to call, I know that nobody but spouses can live on post but other than that I'm not sure what they do if you're about to get married. She is supposed to come out here in August then go see him so maybe if there is a long wait they will get married then. I wont get into my feeling on that though lol

Is there anything else yall can think of for the area?

rentrentrent.com is good for rental houses in case she can't get on the list for housing before then. AAIMS is a good company, and they'd save a lot of money living off base if they went for a cheapish house in a good neighborhood. :D Either way good luck to them!
