View Full Version : I have braces! Eww. :)
jenbaby 07-01-2008, 01:55 PM Yay for me! Yay for DH for giving them to me! I'm soooooooooo excited to finally have them, but I have one of those bite risers. Ugh. Luckily, I'm told this strange deformation of my smile will move on pretty quickly.
:yay

rcwant2be 07-01-2008, 04:31 PM Oooh! Care to post more details? I am getting braces in 2009 and know little about it aside from my dentist said he'd refer me to an ortho. My insurance pays for adult braces less a $1500 copay so I'm putting the money in my health savings account for 09 and doing it.
I have a crowded tooth at the center of my bottom jaw that's been pushed back so that its front is flush with the backs of the teeth on either side. I've still got my wisdom teeth too. I'm really afraid ill need things pull.
Any info you care to share about your experience thus far would be helpful. Pm me if you'd like. Thanks.

What do you mean with a strange deformation? Is it something not common or just crocked teeth?

It depends on what needs to be done. Everyone is different. For me, I had to have a RPE, Rapid Palatal Expander. It was a device that was attached to my upper teeth and took up the entire roof of my mouth. It was activated every night by a key that turned a mechanism in it and expanded my upper jaw, making room for my canines to fall into place.
Then I had my braces put on and depending on how they wanted my teeth to move, made me wear rubber bands. Sometimes I had 4 bands in my mouth at a time and other times it was two (which you can learn to shoot at people using your tongue :giggle).
There's a million things they can do in there that cause you to wear head and neck braces at night and corkscrews, etc.
rcwant2be 07-01-2008, 05:07 PM I honestly have no idea what I need done but I don't think I need anything done to my upper jaw because all those teeth seem just fine. All straight and nice. I'm just wondering what they'll need to do to make room for the crowded one on the bottom. Seems easier to pull it and close a small gap than to force open the space, but then I'd not have the right # of teeth. That makes me curious on the pain level. I'm a wuss. Pretty sure that if I need the wisom teeth pulled (and I prolly do) that ill need to be sedated.

fridayheather 07-01-2008, 05:52 PM :yay for braces! I'm a two time braces survivor (once in jr high and once a few years ago) and I had to have extensive corrective jaw surgery for a severe overbite/overjet, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me!
The best advice I can give you: invest in wax and a Waterpik :yes. I'm excited for you though, braces are so worth it! (especially when you are done with them and have a beautiful smile :D)

That's sweet!!! I had braces for four freaking years. They hurt when you get them tightened but otherwise they're just a pain in the ass when you get food stuck in them. Enjoy fixing your smile! :D

Based on what you said, they might pull your wisdom teeth and then break your jaw and move it.
BrittanyJo 07-01-2008, 06:26 PM :woot Your smile while be ever more beautiful!
CoffeeGirl 07-01-2008, 06:30 PM I have braces too & have had them now for almost 3 yrs:D

My best friend at the time had to have that done in high school. Same issue you had as well. (Crowding on the bottom.)

but i just have one crowded tooth. just one. it's (the tooth & my vanity) not worth a broken jaw.
jenbaby 07-02-2008, 04:09 AM RC, I have crowding in the top teeth. Prolly more substantial than yours. I already had my wisdom teeth taken out, which was prolly causing the crowding to begin with, but had 4 more teeth pulled. They decided I needed some of my bicuspids pulled, which are the ones you tend not to see when someone smiles. The teeth pulling was done 2 weeks before banding (the brackets) and 1 week before separators. Wisdom teeth removal was heaven to me b/c they were going thru cycles of 2-3 months cutting in/dormant. Theresa is right though, it does depend on what kind of situation you have. I have to wear these babies for the next 27 months.
BrittanyJo, thank you gorgeous! :D
I am quickly discovering that wax IS my best friend. My job is in a call center, and the talking today just about rubbed my lips raw. :(

Breaking your jaw often has more to do with jaw deformities that cause your jaw line not to line up. My sis has a severe underbite and was always told that they would have to break her jaw and reset it to correct it.

:wow That's a LONG time. My ortho told me 27+ months, plus retainers. Fun? :no

Thank you! I hate flossing. It's tedious to me...and just got worse. But the ortho ppl told me that they WILL give me a hard time if I don't take proper care of my teeth. I just wish my boss would lay off my back. I talk like I have a lisp now and can't say "s" without sounding funny. I told him he's going you-know-where...:giggle

Oh, I definitely have questions, but I don't know what they are. Like, I learned today that I should have taken the first day with braces off from work...or taken my wax with me. :no I could use a cumulative list of all the instances of pain that I'm going to encounter. Make no mistake, I'm excited to have them--but I wanna know the hell coming.
The best advice I can give you: invest in wax and a Waterpik :yes. I'm excited for you though, braces are so worth it! (especially when you are done with them and have a beautiful smile :D)
I'm so glad you said that. I don't know why the WaterPik is so helpful yet, but my DH got me one for Christmas. What does it do for someone with braces?
What do you mean with a strange deformation? Is it something not common or just crocked teeth?
Shakira, I just meant that my bite risers are forcing my front teeth apart. I have a crossbite, so my top teeth were going to be sitting on my bottom brackets if they didn't put these contraptions in here. I hate them b/c they make a hole in my smile big enough to poke my tongue out. :sad
butterflykiss 07-02-2008, 04:35 AM Woot, used to have bracers also. :-P
nisa81 07-02-2008, 12:49 PM I had them for 3 years and hated the tightening as well! Trying to keep food out of them is ridiculous...so get used to trying to suck food out of the gaps...But my smile is flippin awesome now! :D

I completely agree with this since I had orthognathic surgery in 2002 to correct a severe jaw deformation.
And the Waterpik is just awesome for cleaning all around the brackets and wires, especially in the back. If you use it after you brush your teeth, you'll be surprised at how much gunk comes out. It's kinda messy, best to use it while leaning over the sink but I loved mine and passed it on to my younger sister when she got braces.
Allie 07-03-2008, 09:21 PM :woot i use to have braces, now i have really straight teeth! :teehee
I Heart My LT 07-03-2008, 09:29 PM :D :D :D
rcwant2be 07-03-2008, 09:33 PM i don't think there's anything wrong with my jaw. my one tooth just didn't have enuf space. i had to push my next dentist app't back 3 weeks, but i'd like to get the referral then & get my consultation w/ an ortho in aug or sep, because if i'm gonna do the brace thing, i have to set up the medical savings account in oct or nov. i have soooooooooooooooooooo many questions for the ortho, like how long will this take. it's gonna be my project while db is deployed, for starters.
