Auto zone does free engine diagnostics. I'm not sure if Pep BOys does or not. Call both of them to make sure.
DO NOT take it to a mom and pop place to have an engine diagnostic.. wether it be NC, NJ, PA or anywhere.... they're going to charge somewhere between $50 and $125 to have it done.
Once you have an engine diagnostic done, ask them the CODE and write it down. DO NOT let them talk you into getting it repaired right there before you do your research.
Things to check before you take your car in for diagnostic:
1 - if you recently got gas, make sure your gas cap is on very tight
2 - check your anti-freeze/coolant level to make sure it's ok. if you are low, your check engine light will turn on. if it is low, DO NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANYWHERE UNTIL YOU FILL IT UP.
3 - Check your oil level in your vehicle, make sure it's not too low. Some cars have oil lights, some use the check engine light as an oil light. If it is low, DO NOT drive the vehicle anywhere until you get oil in it.
There is nothing on your car that will make it explode because your check engine light is on. Alot of mechanics will scare a customer into getting something repaired right away, making them think they wont make it home. Trust me, I've driven around with a check engine light on for months before.

I went to Decker's on Pamalee and they were very nice when my car had to be towed. I'm not a car person, but the price wasn't outrageous.
