This might gross some of you out, but I'm curious.

If you and your family (including pets: cats, dogs, horses, etc.) were stranded and had no food left, would you consume your animals?

---

I love my doggers, and I love my horse. But if it came down to me and my family starving, I'd BBQ those suckers up quick. Eddie is a little plump, he'd make a good dog burger.

If it was me starving bymyself no I don't think I could do it. If it was my children starving. Sorry pups I love ya but a meal you will be.

it would depend. I would think if we were that starving our animals wouldn't be much left to eat. or I would try and find other means if possible. If we were like the donner party just stuck then probably.

Without a doubt. If me and my family was starving I would eat a dog, cat, whatever. Even a horse. My mom has a big fat pony that would feed all of us for a long while.

My skinny lil pup wouldn't provide an appetizer. But I think in the case of an emergency, you do what you have to do.

Like Berk said, if it were just me, I don't think I could do it. If it was my child starving, I'd be making doggy-ka-bobs in a heartbeat.

If it was just me by myself and my chances of survival (ultimately) were slim to none, I probably wouldn't even bother with it.

If I knew I would have more of a chance to survive/escape from whatever situation I was in if I ate him, yes I would.

If my kids were with me, I would absolutely do whatever necessary to keep them alive as long as possible, including bbqing Yogi.

As I said in the horse thread.. never get emotionally attached to something you might have to eat one day.

In this house we'd take awhile to starve... there'd be Escargot, Fish sticks, Turtle Tart, Catsoup, Hot Dogs and Rabbit Ribs. :lol

Nah. My only pet is a betta fish. And I'm not really big on seafood :lol

I agree with cc.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but I'd like to put it here as well.

I will say for the record that if the economy goes down the shitter, and I mean to the point of people standing in soup kitchen lines for miles, I will take anyone's horses off their hands. I may not be able to bring myself to eat Arizona, but I'll sure as hell let DF put a bullet in a horse's head to feed my family. A horse would fill up a deep freezer for months. Just sayin'.

Well, if we are starving so is the pet so, in a way, it would be kinder to kill the animal anyway, right? And what is the point of killing them (to spare them further stravation/suffering) only to let them go to waste?

I'd rather eat DH... he has a lot of extra meat! I could live forever! :rofl

I would go fishing, shoot squirrel, raccoon adn other wildlife that's right outside before I turn on my pet.

If I was without access to wildlife I would starve to death and my dog and cats can eat em if they desire.

without a doubt I would eat my pets for survival. I have 3 so I have a bit to choose from. If it was just me alone I could never eat my cat Cody. He's my everything and we would just die together but like I said, I have 2 others to eat. Now if it was my kids then I would do whatever I had to do to feed them.

Depends, have I invented fire yet in my doomed location? I wouldn't eat my animal raw, but if I have a means of cooking my dog or cat, definitely. I'd also go for the cat first, he's a fatass. :lol

Same here. My family consists of myself, my husband, and our two dogs. We don't have, nor do we want children. My pets are my family, and I would rather hunt wild animals, than eat my family members.

I agree for me no for my kids yes. I won't allow my children to starve to death if there is ANY WAY I can avoid it.

:yes my husband is a hunter and would kill whatever wild meat necessary to ensure our survival. Now, me, on the other hand, I don't hunt b/c I have no idea how to shoot a shotgun  but he would make sure our freezer was stocked.

I would be screwed my husband is far far away. I know how to shoot but I don't know how to hunt or prepare what I caught (although it can't be much different then taking apart a whole chicken right? except for the actually killing it part). I actually worry/think about this shit from time to time because I feel we are sliding towards dictatorship. But then I remind myself that is just the paranoia talking and snap out of it.

I have no problem with eating what ever you can get that is edible in times of extreme circumstances.

Besides my birds barely have any meat on their bones

Disturbing as the thought is, I actually was wondering this about myself about a month ago. I don't remember what brought it on. I don't have kids so I can't say what I would do about them. But me... I really don't think I could do it. I love my kitty with everything I've got and I just couldn't eat him. I assume that if I were that desperate, I would be likely to die anyway, so I just couldn't extend my life by eating my kitty cat. I might kill him to stop his suffering, though. I couldn't bear to watch him suffer.

Since its just me, no way. My cats are my kids for the time being. If I had children however, cats would be gone in a heartbeat.

I would actually go hunting before I'd eat my pets... or eat leaves, but if all else failed then sure. Dog stew FTW.

To be honest I have no clue what I would do. But Ordie's skinny a$$ would not provide much food at all so I am thinking it would not be worth the trouble. A worm would be more filling than my dog who looks like he is on crack.:D

emotionally attatched....bring back memories. I grew up on a farm and my uncle told me "Never name the animals!!!" obviously because we had to send them off to get slaughtered. I got really sad when Sunny went away (yes, I named her) and my dad tried to be cute and when the meat came back wrapped in brown paper, he wrote Sunny on one of them. At first I freaked out but then disassociated my cow Sunny with the lump of meat. It actually helped a lot and from then on, I named everything and it didn't bother me when I saw Patrick, Crazy Steve, or LuLu in the freezer. If you grow up on a farm, you just gotta deal with it.

But I'd make DB go hunt squirrels or something before I ate my kitten and our dogs. But as many of you said, if I had kids, I'd be cookin kitten-ka-bobs and doggie sammiches.

I don't have kids, so I cannot speak to that situation. But as for myself, I would never intentionally kill and eat my pets, I would rather starve to death.

I learned the hard way about naming 'food' when we were raising lambs for Easter dinner. And then we had a hutch of ooooodles of bunnies. One afternoon Brownie was eating out of my hand, then I was eating his leg. When you grow up on a farm, it is what it is. You raise what you eat, you eat what you raise.

I agree. I honestly just couldn't do it. Just the thought makes me physically ill. But I know there are a lot of people who see their pets as just that... pets. My pets are my babies and I don't think I would even want to survive alone without them anyway.

It's kind of hard to imagine eating Sammy-dog and it's hard to imagine there being absolutely no options anywhere. We would have to absolutely desperate with absolutely no options, then my children would have to come first.
