How long has it been since you were in school?
Why did you decide to go back?
What are your plans?

Years ago I dropped out of school because I was pregnant, we married, had 2 kids, and then divorced. I worked for my GED but didn't go further than that. I was hired on as a employee at a craft store - and then as an assistant manager at a fabric store, and an assistant manager at a theater and then onto another craft store as a department manager (Hobby Lobby) where I met my husband.

I ALWAYS had plans of managing a store but HL ended up screwing my hours and I couldn't afford to pay for childcare for 2 weeks with the hours they shafted me with and I had to quit.

Then my husband and I had more kids - and then more. LOL
And so then I eventually decided to try to get to college and flopped miserably on my SAT - so I went to a community college which was OK but at that time I had to pay out of pocket and I couldn't afford to keep going.

So here I am, finally, all these years later - the youngest is 2 and he's a rowdy sucker and would benifit from daycare. I have no worries about him going, he'll be the troublemaker in time out all day :lol All the other kids will be in school starting next month so I figured this year would be a good year to finally head back.

So I took my ACT, scored OK - and today I'm calling the school to find out if I'm actually *in* - I'm going to become a Pharmacist for a variety of reasons. Job security and the other benifits is one main thing.
My husband will be retiring from the military in about 7 years so I figure that by then I'll be done with college (I don't expect to be able to attend full time until the youngest is in Pre-k)
And there you go.

I haven't been in school for 11 years! A long freaking time, if you ask me.

BUT- in the years past I really don't think I could have handled it. It took me a while to mature into motherhood. For quite a while I didn't really take care of the kids, my parents did all that and i just came home from worked and lived like a teenager.
But now I'm sure I can handle it - life's dealt me alot. If I can make it through deployment and all this other junk then I can make it through college. LOL

:hi

That is awesome that you are finally going back! That will be great for you and for your family.

I have only been out for about 4 years. My husband and I were talking the other day and he decided to buy me a laptop and get me all ready. Depending on the school that I go to I can start at the end of this month. I would be going for Criminal Justice. I have enrolled before and always found a fantastic reason to not continue with it. Now DH will be out of the Navy before we know it and I need to go ahead and get my degree.

10 years for me. I've always wanted to go to college but the money was never there. SZo I bounced around from one job to the next trying to figure out what I wanted to do. Finally I decided I NEEDED to go to school. I couldn't handle being the muck monkey on horse farms anymore...even as a manager or foreman I was still treated like an idiot. I don't handle that well.

I applied at a community college and began taking classes last fall. I'm now in an online program to be a certified Vet Assistant and from there I'll go on and take courses to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Should I feel confident enough then and I have the means then I may pursue Vet school, which is something I wanted to do when I was 12.

I had a really good scholarship right out of high school, but I gave it all up to get married :duh Here I am, 7 years later, and I am filling out scholarship paperwork today, in fact. Since I also recently found out that I will be able to use DH's GI bill, I will probably be going back as soon as this spring. I am currently taking online classes though.

I think the use of the GI bill for spouses and dependants won't be available for at least a year, at least that was what I read on Military.com.

That said though, I am waiting on it too so I can go back to college, it will have been a 5 year break by then. What is with us women who give up college to get married? I had scholarships and grants too.

Me, I'm going back in August! Guess that is next month, wow!

It has been 9+ years since I was in school. Little nervous.

I have wanted to go back for years, but I finally decided with T going full-day to school that I really just needed to do it.

My plan (short-term) is to become an L & D nurse. I hope someday to become an MD and do Doctors without Borders, but I won't even apply to Med School until my kids are grown, so that is long-term.

i say go back hon and get the most out of it! my girls did not even want to think about college until i went back to school and now they are all excited about the idea of attending after highschool.

Thanks for that info! I hadn't really checked into it yet, so that's good to know.

How long has it been since you were in school? It's been about 4 years. Health issues made me stop for a bit. All in all I have about 30 credits so far.
Why did you decide to go back? I am going to school online so that will be easier for me with medical issues. My kids are getting older and I always said I want my degree no matter if I work or not.
What are your plans? I was a nursing major at first but because of my medical issues it is way to much for me to do. I can't keep up with that so I have been thinking of something I can do with the final goal being a business from home. I choose Hotel and Resturant Management to get me started. My overall goal is to add event planning, travel and tourism among other things to that and be able to start my own bussiness. Next fall I plan on working at some resort in Williamsburg part time to get some experience while in school. So far that's the plan.:) Not sure how it will go but I have a plan.:D

How long has it been since you were in school?

About 8 years.

Why did you decide to go back?

After working full time, and most of the time keeping a part time job at night, for about 8 years, my husband and I decided that if I wanted to go to school, we had enough in savings to do so. It was something I never thought I was going to be able to do, after leaving my mother's abusive home at 16. I am so glad to be able to do this now.

What are your plans?

For now I am in a Biology transfer program at the local community college. After I get the Associates of Science to transfer, I am going to transfer to a 4 year university, and hopefully graduate with my Bachelor's of Science in Biology, and a minor in Forest Science. I would love to work for the National Parks Service in the future. :)

Have you got an idea where you'd like to do your pharm work? Do you know about the 6-year programs (generally only accepting to high school seniors), 5-year programs, and 4-year programs?

Right now some students are getting accepted into PharmD programs without bachelor's degrees, including those who have community college credits. However, the general feeling is that in the next few years, almost all pharmacy schools will require a bachelor's degree before beginning a PharmD program. So realistically, you're looking at 4 years of school beyond whatever time it takes for you to finish an undergrad degree (or get very close to finishing).

I'm asking because some pharm programs have extra pre-reqs. For example, Auburn (where my #2 kid is getting her PharmD) requires two biochem credits and an immunology credit, neither of which are standard in the typical undrergrad degrees. Shen ended up taking a year after receiving her undergrad (in Pre-professional Science, no less!) to take the remaining pre-reqs required by Auburn. If she had chosen to go to VCU she could have gotten in right after her undergrad degree, and she'd have been in-state too! But noooooo...... So if you know where you want to do your professional work, you can gear your undergrad degree toward that.

Anyhow, I've gotten pretty knowledgeable about Pharmacy school entrance requirements, so if you want some info, feel free to ask. If you haven't discovered the Pharmacy section of Student Doctor Network, that's another great source of information.

Good luck!

Me! I'm going back. I've been taking classes here and there for years. I graduated high school in 1997 and have a bunch of credits from community college that don't amount to anything. I need one more year of community college before I can transfer to a university where I will be getting a computer science degree. I will be taking out school loans to pay for childcare while I'm attending.

How long has it been since you were in school? 12 long years although I had plenty of navy/military courses in between then and now.

Why did you decide to go back? I need a neew career as my old one kicked me too the curb so I went through the VA and got into the vocrehab program.

What are your plans? 2 years community college then transfer to complete with my BA at a four year university.

Me! I went to a semester of college, dropped out (more like failed b/c I stopped going to class :duh), and moved to Cali!

Here I am now, after 7 yrs, going to school for court reporting. I have been wanting to get a degree for a long time. Not only to have a career when the kids are in school, but to have a personal achievement for myself.

It will take me 3-4 yrs to finish, then after that I will either do judicial or possibly CART (the captioning you see on tv). Not sure.
