bugs the crap out of me. I watched this when it actually happened and even then I thought it was awful she could of lost the ability to walk but she stuck the landing.
What are your thoughts on teenagers competing on injuries that can greatly change the rest of their lives if it goes wrong?
rosebud* 07-10-2008, 02:47 PM Actually i kinda like that commercial, she could have walked away, but she wanted it just as much as everyone else. and technically Keri Strug was an adult since she was 18 at the time.
BAMF Army Wife 07-10-2008, 02:47 PM its a risk i would take. i think she is amazing for doing that.
cceribit 07-10-2008, 02:48 PM Unfortunately I think it's up to them to decide how far they go when it comes to the competitions. If my son was driven to do something... I'd give him my advice, but essentially it would be his decision. I do not think a parent should push them above and beyond their own personal expectations though. Support them yes, push them, no.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 02:49 PM I think I would have big ole pussy who was laying on the sidelines in the fetal position while I had honking bag of ice on my ankle.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 02:50 PM would have BEEN a big ole pussy. Not have big ole pussy. Just saying. :suspect
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 02:51 PM Actually i kinda like that commercial, she could have walked away, but she wanted it just as much as everyone else. and technically Keri Strug was an adult since she was 18 at the time.
I know she is an adult but as an 18 (18 is still a teenager) year old her body is still growing. If she had damaged it she may have become handicapped.
I understand the drive and desire to get that medal but I think it sends a very bad message that even when you are injured you have to keep on going. The girls that look up to her see that and think they too need to follow that example.
As a parent I have to think of my kids future I would not want them to play on an injury that could cause them life long complications.
I guess while I think she is an amazing athlete I don't think what she did was something to use as a teaching tool of what to do if you injure yourself.
cceribit 07-10-2008, 02:51 PM would have BEEN a big ole pussy. Not have big ole pussy. Just saying. :suspect
:lmao
Theresa has big ol' pussy....
:lmao
Theresa 07-10-2008, 02:51 PM The only thing my body has done since 18 is get fatter. :lol I've been this size (height) since 7th grade.
Berkley 07-10-2008, 02:51 PM I love that commercial. It was up to her to continue on she choose to.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 02:52 PM I think I would have big ole pussy who was laying on the sidelines in the fetal position while I had honking bag of ice on my ankle.
LOL me too I don't think I could of had the drive to do that AND stick the landing it was an amazing thing I just don't agree with it. I mean the pressure on her to finish HAD to of been massive, all the money spent getting her there, her coaches esteem in her etc. She had the whole world on her that day I feel like. That is a lot for a teen to deal with.
cceribit 07-10-2008, 02:53 PM I don't think she felt it as a teaching tool... I think she felt she WAS the best and damn she WAS going to prove it. Damned the consequences, she was a winner.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 02:53 PM :lmao

I could tell you what my gyno said during my first pap...but that would be embarrassing. :suspect

actually you can use that as an opportunity to talk to your kids and say she didn't have to keep going she could have sat out and it would have been ok. I don't think it is any different then the other commercial with the runner.
I would hope that my kids look up to people who have drive and desire to finish what they start. over come hurt to make it to the end. Otherwise they end up like me writhing in pain at the first sign of discomfort. :lol
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 02:53 PM The only thing my body has done since 18 is get fatter. :lol I've been this size (height) since 7th grade.
LOL your height may not change BUT you are still growing/developing at 18.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 02:55 PM I don't think she felt it as a teaching tool... I think she felt she WAS the best and damn she WAS going to prove it. Damned the consequences, she was a winner.
I don't think she did either BUT the little girls watching her (then and now) and the coaches that use her as an example DO.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 02:55 PM LOL me too I don't think I could of had the drive to do that AND stick the landing it was an amazing thing I just don't agree with it. Very true, but if you're born and raised gymnastics AND your efforts got you onto the Olympic team AND you're competing at the Olympics...your will is going to supercede your pain. The only way she was able to run and stick that landing is because she WANTED it. SHE had to want it, regardless of the surrounding pressures.
cceribit 07-10-2008, 02:55 PM The same can be said for our Soldiers... they trudge through, regardless of the hurt. They have a mission and it will be completed, one way or another.
rosebud* 07-10-2008, 02:56 PM I think when you do a sport that you ultimately have a goal of going to the Olympics you have more drive and desire then coaches and parents can put upon you.
Amberly 07-10-2008, 02:58 PM I mean honestly she was doing severe damage to her body her entire career. I think it's worse some of the things these athletes go through when they are just children.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 02:59 PM I mean honestly she was doing severe damage to her body her entire career. I think it's worse some of the things these athletes go through when they are just children.
I agree with that as well.
cceribit 07-10-2008, 02:59 PM I've also found myself included, when I have a goal... the pain doesn't matter.
The consequences don't matter. The end GOAL and achieving that goal superceded everything else. No coach or parent could sway me. And it was fully my decision.
If the commercial teaches anything, as well as the one with the injured runner, it teaches that human's endure for themselves and what they can achieve. If you believe you can, you will. If you never try, you'll never know.
And I don't believe that any of these people injure themselves throughout their career. I never was put in a position or put myself in the position to be in danger of physical injury.
I don't think anyone will make anyone happy on this site this week... if you're fat you suck, if you're overly thin b/c of sports you suck, if you're slaughtered you suck...*sigh*
Can't anyone just watch this commercial and be like OMG she's fantastic and she DESERVED that damned medal?? No, we have to have a debate about it and find controversy in it.

no offense but what career does a gymnast really have? :dunno there isn't like a huge league of pro gymnast that rake in oodles of money.
Amberly 07-10-2008, 03:03 PM no offense but what career does a gymnast really have? :dunno there isn't like a huge league of pro gymnast that rake in oodles of money.
Well...if they get commercials like this I am assuming she is doing pretty well for herself.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 03:04 PM no offense but what career does a gymnast really have? :dunno there isn't like a huge league of pro gymnast that rake in oodles of money.
Well most people that get into gymnastics have some hope in the back of their minds to make it to the big O. It is a career and they do shows just like the ice skaters do shows as well. Just because they don't make the money basket ball players or football players, or baseball players make doesn't make it less of a career. Often if a gymnast is good they will go on to become coaches and there is BIG money in that.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 03:04 PM It's footage from years ago, how is that a career for Keri Strug or making her any kind of money?
*Christy6* 07-10-2008, 03:05 PM This is the Olympics. Of course all athletes are going to try to keep going.. It is an once in a lifetime event..
Donna 07-10-2008, 03:05 PM I played volleyball with a torn ACL:dunno Back then my goal was the Sydney Olympic team. Yea, I am paying the price now for that choice, but if I had to do it over again, I would still do it the same way.

but usually you are done with performing by your teens. rarely does anyone over 20 join the olympic team.
I was just stating that aside from being a coach there isn't much of a career for gymnasts.. after the olympics. and getting sponsorship doesn't really require your gymnastic abilities since they usually are looking for your name and face.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 03:06 PM It's footage from years ago, how is that a career for Keri Strug or making her any kind of money?
She gets paid for public appearances and she gets paid royalties for the commercial.
I don't know if she has a gymnastic school with her name on it but a lot of the famous ones do that sort of thing. It is a career for some gymnasts.
USMCSGTsGirl1239 07-10-2008, 03:07 PM Actually i kinda like that commercial, she could have walked away, but she wanted it just as much as everyone else. and technically Keri Strug was an adult since she was 18 at the time.

:agree to all of the above.
no offense but what career does a gymnast really have? :dunno there isn't like a huge league of pro gymnast that rake in oodles of money.
And well, not a career per se, but, their career as a gymnast is pretty limited due to age, and any injuries, wear and tear etc. While their may not be a "huge pro league of gymnasts" there still are competitions, far and away beyond the Olympics, and any high dollar endorsement deals that come from being "that person who won that medal or championship"
The shelf life on those endorsements is limited too, based on their place in their career. At some point they will stop, unless, you end up like Dorothy Hamil, Mary Lou Retton or several of the other "big ones" who scored medical endorsements in their later years. :dunno It's just how you look at it, I suppose.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 03:07 PM Here is the Kerri Strug website: http://www.strug.org/ She is also a member of the Presidential Prayer Team.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 03:08 PM I think it depends on whether or not she receives royalties for that. The Olympics are broadcast Worldwide, they might have had to sign away their rights to be paid royalties for such usage.
Amberly 07-10-2008, 03:11 PM I think it depends on whether or not she receives royalties for that. The Olympics are broadcast Worldwide, they might have had to sign away their rights to be paid royalties for such usage.
Honestly I doubt that. I mean tons of things are broadcast worldwide...it's not like they aren't still copywrited. Also they used her name. She has to be getting something for that.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 03:13 PM I dunno, I'm not in the biz, just speculating other scenarios. :lol
cceribit 07-10-2008, 03:14 PM Well...if they get commercials like this I am assuming she is doing pretty well for herself.
That was footage from past olympics and she gets paid nothing for that appearance. They are not paid like SAG. They don't get 500$ a day for an appearance.
She gets paid for public appearances and she gets paid royalties for the commercial.
I don't know if she has a gymnastic school with her name on it but a lot of the famous ones do that sort of thing. It is a career for some gymnasts.
The only way she would get paid would be from Nike or the company whose clothing she would be wearing, and that's a limited contractual agreement when she's in active competition.
Or if she found herself on a box of wheaties.
I think it depends on whether or not she receives royalties for that. The Olympics are broadcast Worldwide, they might have had to sign away their rights to be paid royalties for such usage.
It's a sporting event... they don't get royalities. It's like the NFL, none of the players see a dime just b/c they're shown during the game.
rosebud* 07-10-2008, 03:14 PM Honestly I doubt that. I mean tons of things are broadcast worldwide...it's not like they aren't still copywrited. Also they used her name. She has to be getting something for that.
not necessarily. They probably paid the olympics or NBC or whoever broadcast it but not necessarily her. Kinda like when you sign up for a reality tv you sign a contract that allows them the right to use your image/footage taken of you during the time of the show at their discretion. Just because they used your name doesn't mean you get paid for it. They didn't ask her for new footage but used old footage. there is a difference.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 03:16 PM Can I use my smug face now? :giggle

I'm sure she is... and she should. She earned the right to through hard work and determination of her own endurance and drive.
However I'm sure she has a 'backup' plan like a degree in something, or is furthering her education.
I dated an Olympic swimmer... swimming was not all he did. He was attending Law School and is now a professor at a college as well as being a swim coach and an Olympics broadcaster.
Theresa 07-10-2008, 03:26 PM It talks about her backup plan. :yes
Today Kerri is 30 and she works in Washington, D.C. She earned an undergraduate and a graduate degree from Stanford University. In her free time, Kerri enjoys running marathons, working with charities, giving motivational speeches, and cheering on young gymnasts as they go after their own dreams.
Green~Mammy 07-10-2008, 03:28 PM It talks about her backup plan. :yes
LOL CC I never said she didn't I have already looked at the site so I know she works in DC, she wanted a break from the gym can't say I blame her. All I said was that for SOME gymnasts it is a career and they follow up their gymnastics with becoming a coach. I used her as an example because I was not sure what she was doing, then I googled and found out what she is doing. :)
Berkley 07-10-2008, 03:31 PM I've also found myself included, when I have a goal... the pain doesn't matter.

Jennygirl 07-10-2008, 03:33 PM I love these commericals, espically the one about the dad and son
cceribit 07-10-2008, 03:33 PM It's fine. I guess I'm just so frustrated that everything... and I mean EVERYTHING has a debate attached. I could say that Theresa has a huge vajayjay... and she admitted it. And someone somewhere would post a debate that no, in fact, her vajayjay is not huge.
This commerical is inspirational. It's trying to show the thrill of the win, the agony of defeat... the purpose of the Olympics. It's not a public service message of the disaster of training too hard. A warning that parents are training their children too hard, pushing too far. It's not an ad for anorexics anonymous. It's simply showing the purpose behind the Olympics.

I totally agree it is about showing what you are made of how hard you worked to get to the Olympics and damn it you aren't going to waste it.
and T's vajayjay isn't huge.. it's giant. duhhhh there is a difference
Jennygirl 07-10-2008, 03:36 PM I think its more that its about the olympics in china that anything else.

well this years, not the ones they are showing, so to me that isn't a valid argument. :lol feel free to debate that though.

Well its the debate section it would be a sort of boring section if we didn't ever debate anything in it. :) It would also be boring if we all agreed with everything here in this section.
Jennygirl 07-10-2008, 03:39 PM i espically love the one with the father finishing the race with his son

I could not justifiably debate the physical SIZE of your vajayjay... I can only go on your own post. That it may in fact be huge :teehee

I need to not answer is all. But... it's .... so.... hard!!!! :duh:duh:duh

I used the commercial as an example the question was under it but no one really answered that. :dunno

cceribit 07-10-2008, 03:52 PM What are your thoughts on teenagers competing on injuries that can greatly change the rest of their lives if it goes wrong?

Aunt Sponge 07-10-2008, 03:57 PM Atheletes - to each their own and especially for special occasions like the olypics.
However, I don't believe it should be used to advertise ANYTHING. Injuries shouldn't be praised and paraded like THAT's the goal of the game.

Midge.T 07-10-2008, 09:44 PM I think if she wasn't caught up in that pivotal moment there's no way she would have done another vault. There was so much riding on her performance and those girls aren't taught to let people down.
I'm curious if put in the same situation, if she'd do it again now knowing the risks to mobility should things go wrong.
LittleMsSunshine 07-11-2008, 01:35 AM I think it's freaking stupid.
But, I have no respect for ANYONE who risks further injuring themselves by continuing to compete. I don't think it's something to applaud.... I think it's fucking stupid.
Why do you think so many highschool football players end up with all these fucked up injuries? They "take one for the team".... a team that only lasts four years.... and end up being fucked up the rest of their life because of it. :rolleyes
