View Full Version : Are "Tattoos - an unholy desecration of your body"
Aunt Sponge 07-11-2008, 04:03 PM Sounds funny but that's EXACTLY what my Mom said.
Word for word. :lol (therein lies the mystery to how I turned out)
HOWEVER - while believing that tattoos are sinful she DOESN'T believe that ear-piercings ARE (though they are essentially the same - altering and "improving" your appearance to be more appealing, etc)
Yes - this means she thinks my husband's a horrible person :rolleyes and she believes this about me though she doesn't YET know i have a tattoo! :lol
So - those of you who are religious or not - what are you views on that thought process?
WGs_Grrl 07-11-2008, 04:05 PM In the Jewish faith, it is. You are to leave this world the same way you came in (although I do need to ask exDB about piercings...Hm :thinking)
But, I don't believe so personally...Guess I'll be a bad Jew!
Aunt Sponge 07-11-2008, 04:06 PM :lol Ok - cheesy religious joke time!
*ahem*
That means you will just be Jewish
CarLooSHoo 07-11-2008, 04:09 PM :lol Ok - cheesy religious joke time!

hahaha I get it!
WGs_Grrl 07-11-2008, 04:10 PM :lmao
So I've heard! :D
jen1982 07-11-2008, 04:11 PM I think it's all the same. I am an Atheist, so the religious aspect does not come into play with me. But, someone telling me that it's a desecration to have the tattoos I have, while they have ears pierced, hair dyed, or other changes to their body other than the way they were brought into this world, is a bit hypocritical.
I don't care one way or the other as long as people don't approach me and say something along those lines about my tattoos. It has been done before, and at those moments I am not against bringing to the attention of the accuser that they are not as righteous as they believe themselves to be.
I don't see anything wrong with someone believing it to be wrong, but it's the approaching others and informing them of how wrong they believe them to be, that really bugs me. To me, what you do with your own body, is your business. The same goes for my own. :)
square bear 07-11-2008, 04:12 PM Boy I hope not. I got one 2 days ago :rofl
Oh well.
browneyedbeauty 07-11-2008, 04:12 PM No. It is an unholy desecration of my peace of mind to have that spouted at me repeatedly.
carmel11725 07-11-2008, 04:13 PM theres a verse in Leviticus that says not to make cuts to your body or markings. Thats in the OT, though. some people say that doesnt apply to us now.
i personally am not convicted about it...i have piercings and a tattoo.
J_Conk 07-11-2008, 04:14 PM My grandpa wouldn't let my mom get her ears pierced when she was younger, she had to wait until she was an adult... lol
He also told my sister she's going to hell for her tattoos/piercings. He doesn't know about mine :giggle
redhd21 07-11-2008, 04:18 PM My step mom feels the same way... which is why she doesn't know that I have one!
Mine's of a cross though... so that either a) cancels out the desecration..... or b) means that God is going to smite me for desecrating the cross and being blasphemous!
I don't think it is a desecration at all... hence the fact that I have one!
lemc81 07-11-2008, 04:20 PM Nah, I'm a Christian and don't have a problem with tats.

Yeah that! I have many family members who feel that way!
My first tattoo was a Celtic Cross. On my TRAMP STAMP! How's that one for you? I will leave it at that! ;)
Of course I have my ears pierced & 5 tattoos with plans of a couple more. If God feels I should rot in hell because of my tattoos & piercings, then I guess I will serve my time in hell well! That rhymes! :teehee
anmiller86 07-11-2008, 04:24 PM if we went by the standard that we are supposed to exit the world the way we came in, then shouldn't we be naked bloody and screaming?? hmm...
also maybe we should all stop shaving our pits legs and bikini areas too, by that philosophy.
i don't wanna go to hell, so i think i need to reconsider all these piercings and my dyed hair. guess i can't get a tattoo either. :giggle

Mine is a celtic cross with a clover in the middle of it! I love it! It is on my lower back, but on the right side and not in the middle.

all the rules in leviticus are supposedly of equal importance. there is another passage that says you are not supposed to cut your hair (lev 19:27:""'You shall not cut the hair on the sides of your heads, neither shall you clip off the edge of your beard.". so i guess 99.9999999999% of people are horrible sinners.
kt*hed 07-11-2008, 04:42 PM Nah, I'm a Christian and don't have a problem with tats.
:agree I feel the same way......I actually got a tattoo to remind myself to continue to have faith in myself and my religious beliefs

Mine's is a huge cross as well.

yeah, but that is all under the Old testament Law. some christians believe that when Jesus died on the cross for us, He put an end to the OT law. and He, himself, became the perfect example of the law. There are some verses in the NT that say that, too. but i guess it all depends on how you interpret it.

Ah - ok, see that sums up some things that I never got.
Now some people make perfect sense!
And what about circumcision - per the Jewish faith part of this desecration belief - isn't that changing how you are?
Ellen 07-11-2008, 04:45 PM I guess it would depend on the tattoo.......;)
Caimbrie 07-11-2008, 05:20 PM I'm not religious... but for years when I wanted my ears pierced my dad always said "if god wanted extra holes in your body he would ahve put them there" :lol Luckily my mom is portuguese and it's part of the portuguese culture so I got them pierced finally at 12 and a second set at 16 :lol
Green~Mammy 07-11-2008, 05:27 PM Guess I'll be a bad Jew!
Me too I have one tattoo.

I don't agree with that at all...I do however believe that yes the bible says we shouldn't mark up our bodies, BUT we're all sinners and yes I have 3 as well as 3 piercings in each ear.
