View Full Version : Can someone be both fat AND pretty?
[poll]
i dont mean the word "fat" to be offensive either... just overweight.
i am curious because of something that was said to me yesterday
WGs_Grrl 07-13-2008, 07:42 PM WHA?!?! :wow
Of course!!!

i am glad the ladies on here aren't of hte same school of thought as one of my exes :lol
livelaughlove87 07-13-2008, 07:45 PM yes! i am considered "overweight" by today's standards(although I may not look it sometimes) and I think I am pretty and db says the same thing.
DakotaCowgirl 07-13-2008, 07:46 PM Pretty is more then just looks. Someone can be a size 2, drop dead beautiful and her attitude is so bad it makes her look like....crap.
Another person can be a size 20, average looking, but her attitude makes her so pretty.
RnS1112 07-13-2008, 07:46 PM absolutely!!!!!!!
Mrs.Trouble 07-13-2008, 07:48 PM Absolutely.
There are some seriously sexy "fat" chicks.
RunAwayLove 07-13-2008, 07:48 PM id like to think so in my own case...and yes definately!
sdshorty 07-13-2008, 07:49 PM Of course, whoever says otherwise is just an idiot
BLBnJVB3 07-13-2008, 07:49 PM Absolutely.
I'm very happy to see, so far at least, nobody has said no.
Also, and I'm really hoping this doesn't come out wrong or get taken the wrong way, but I've seen some people who had some weight, go on and lose it, and I thought they looked better with it. Maybe they just lost too much but I thought they looked better before losing it.
Christine 07-13-2008, 07:50 PM Absolutely!
thejibstah 07-13-2008, 07:53 PM Most certainly!
Victoria 07-13-2008, 07:54 PM DEFINITELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bryanna 07-13-2008, 07:54 PM THERE ARE NO NOS!!! :D
Navywife85 07-13-2008, 07:54 PM yes there are tons of voluptuous ladies...:cp
thejibstah 07-13-2008, 07:55 PM Absolutely.

I agree with you. Some people really look better with more 'meat on the bones' for lack of better term.

:hail
~Jules~ 07-13-2008, 07:56 PM i think anyone can be beautiful no matter what size or shape they are, its all about how someone carries themselves and how they take care of themselves as well.
Larissa 07-13-2008, 07:56 PM Yes,without a doubt.
Lckychrmzz 07-13-2008, 07:56 PM absolutely!!!!!!!!!
mossey2000 07-13-2008, 07:57 PM i like to think im decent looking even with the extra baggage.
CrankyDiva 07-13-2008, 07:57 PM What do you mean by fat? There are many different ways to define it. Some define it as having too much flabbiness; well, I have met bigger girls that were pretty solid. Others define it as being plump; but at what size does that make one plump versus obese?
I think fat is too subjective of a term to take seriously. Medically speaking, I am overweight because I weigh just a wee bit more than someone my height should. But, I am not sure if I have too much flabbiness as I have a flat stomach, a defined waist, firm thighs but slightly flabby arms.
Are you fat when your weight creates medical issues? Or, are you fat because you don't wear a size 6?
instant_oatmeal 07-13-2008, 07:57 PM Absolutely! I've seen a lot of really pretty heavier girls!
Sweetest*Agony 07-13-2008, 08:00 PM Yes.. most deff.
I am overweight by societys views and yet I have guys telling me that I am pretty all the time.
Many guys have told me that mature guys mostly look at the face of the girl. If she has a pretty face and a great personality and is overweight or skinny then they will ask her out. But if she is skinny with an ugly face then they won't ask her out.
Granted.. self absurbed men don't act like that.. because well we know why ;)

I couldn't have said it better.
Absolutely! Need proof? Queen Latifah. Camryn Mannheim. Jordyn Sparks. Emme. KIWIJUS!!!!! Chloe Marshall. My friend Michelle M. HEATHER/mossey is absolutely stunning (no joke).
MrsDarland 07-13-2008, 08:01 PM Hell yeah!

I fall in love with you a little more each day :D
My gosh woman! You're absolutely gorgeous, you have a hot husband (shhhhh, don't tell him I said that, grin), your boys are just adorable..... seriously, if you start feeling down about yourself, PM me and I'll remind you how beautiful you are.
(but I still have a girl-crush on Berk)
SnarphBlat 07-13-2008, 08:16 PM OF COURSE!!!

kt*hed 07-13-2008, 08:18 PM Yes of course!
Miss B Hav'n 07-13-2008, 08:20 PM Of course they can.
andrews_wifey 07-13-2008, 08:26 PM hmmm, let's see if I can word this correctly this time... lol
YES I do believe someone can be overweight and pretty. I honestly feel it depends on how you hold yourself. I know this may go off topic, but I don't look at "looks" when I decide if someone is pretty or not. I don't think true beauty is in looks as much as it is in personality and how you hold yourself.
Kaymara 07-13-2008, 08:27 PM Definatly

soulfyre 07-13-2008, 08:59 PM I definitely think so..I'm overweight for my frame, but not fat...at least my BF says so, lol...I'd like to think I'm pretty....
HeatherNichole 07-13-2008, 09:00 PM umm yes....skinny does NOT equal pretty!!!
leftover 07-13-2008, 09:05 PM (but I still have a girl-crush on Berk)
For real, me too.. :teehee Berk is a babe.. :blush

TallBlondie82 07-13-2008, 09:13 PM 100% YES
ilovekale 07-13-2008, 09:14 PM most definitely!!
spacecasey4 07-13-2008, 09:20 PM Most Def! :D
Well, atleast my Hubby says I pretty (and not fat) but I not in denial like him. :screwy
Exactly
KennyB65 07-13-2008, 09:27 PM i am glad the ladies on here aren't of hte same school of thought as one of my exes :lol
one of your exes is an idiot! I love me some big girls!! My DW was in the Miss Teen pageant in HS and had people tell her she would be SO PRETTY if she wasnt fat..... its comments like that that ruins women self esteem. There are some beautiful big girls on this site, but I'm only here for the posts.:wowsers
Yes! Look at Sophie Dahl (not exactly fat, but you get my point!), Adele, Queen Latifah and Kelly Osbourne. Even the gorgeous Marilyn Monroe was a 12 (again, not fat but not thin either). Just as 'skinny' does not necessarily mean pretty, 'fat' does not necessarily mean ugly.
leftover 07-13-2008, 09:52 PM Most Def! :D
Well, atleast my Hubby says I pretty (and not fat) but I not in denial like him. :screwy
Mine says I have a big fat mouth.. :whatever Whatever.. I'm in denial over that one.

I do want to join the boobie club, but I gave DD my camera and she won't be back for a week or two. Can I add the thingy and then post a pic of my cleavage when I get the camera?:D
WGs_Grrl 07-13-2008, 10:24 PM Hmm. We have a sole "no" vote...Would that person care to express their reasons why?
Miss ♥ 07-13-2008, 10:27 PM Of course!! Beauty comes in all shapes, colors, and sizes.
Lckychrmzz 07-13-2008, 10:38 PM Hmm. We have a sole "no" vote...Would that person care to express their reasons why?
I was wondering the same thing.
*Samantha* 07-13-2008, 10:44 PM Uh yes!!! I am overweight and I KNOW I am pretty! LOL but seriously yes you can
KennyB65 07-13-2008, 10:48 PM probably someone wanting to be different..... like the audience members on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. When the question is "what do you put on a hamburger bun" , someone always has to say soup or something else to be different. But maybe they really do feel that way though....
marinegirl85 07-13-2008, 10:50 PM yes, i think so
LovinHerSailor 07-13-2008, 10:53 PM I was wondering the same thing.
Hmm. We have a sole "no" vote...Would that person care to express their reasons why?
Yeah I wanna know why too. Why do you think bigger girls cannot be pretty?? If you are going to participate in the vote at least have the balls to state your reasoning behind it. :grumpy:bringit
I am a bigger girl myself. And my boyfriend tells me everyday how beautiful, and sexy I am. Its people that say "You'd be soo pretty, if you weren't fat" that ruin girl's self esteems. It's people like that need to realize that all women come in every shape, size, color. One of my favorite quotes is "Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes straight to the bone" Some of the most beautiful women are plus sized.
Queen Latifa
America Ferrara
Jordan Sparks
Anna Nicole Smith (in her plus size days)
Kirstie Alley
Delta Burke
Monique
To this person that voted no, do u even realize that plus size is for a size 12 and up which makes up about half of the population of the world. WE ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL, NO MATTER WHAT SIZE WE ARE!!!!:cp
Mrs.Highfill 07-13-2008, 11:19 PM I said yes and I definitely think so! With the one exception being myself. I was "thick" and drop dead gorgeous in highschool and a year afterwards, but now that I've gained 80 lbs I am so ugly. I can tell too by how I don't get hit on anymore. I look wretched fat. BUT I have overweight friends that I find absolutely stunning.
mrsfaller 07-13-2008, 11:20 PM some of the most beautiful people i know are overweight
truzbabygirl 07-13-2008, 11:20 PM yes they can
WAITING WIFE 07-13-2008, 11:22 PM DUH I hate to hear people say You have such a pretty face if you would only lose weight wtf kind of shit is that to say???????????? beauty is so inside the person hell watch Shallow hal and they cn learn something
AnAopps 07-13-2008, 11:23 PM I have to say MOST DEF! :yes
silent_earth 07-13-2008, 11:24 PM Are there ugly skinny people? You bet.
Fat does not mean you can't be pretty.
Green~Mammy 07-13-2008, 11:32 PM Yes I mean Jennifer Hudson is not exactly a size 2, America Ferrera, Queen Latifiah, countless other regular people.
Devinn 07-13-2008, 11:33 PM I'm fat and proud yo! :mrgreen
Hell yes women can be fat and pretty. I personally think women are more attractive with a little softness to them. Most men I know can not stand bony women.
sandykay 07-13-2008, 11:33 PM absolutly
MelissaMc424 07-13-2008, 11:34 PM There are TONS of gorgeous "fat" women. I don't think size has anything to do with beauty. There are some very thin women who are most definately not "beautiful" by modern standards..
Loretta 07-13-2008, 11:35 PM Beauty isn't dictated by size. In my opinion, it's usually the ehalthiest people who are pretty, regardless of their size! Healthy hair, skin and teeth are the first things people notice. :yes
MelissaMc424 07-13-2008, 11:36 PM I'm fat and proud yo! :mrgreen
Hell yes women can be fat and pretty. I personally think women are more attractive with a little softness to them. Most men I know can not stand bony women.
Amen... I had a conversation with my dad recently, because he was wondering what my brother saw in his GF... he called her Olive Oyl, because she's so thin.. I had to then explain that a lot of younger men these days don't like curvy women..
Lucky for me, my husband loves my big T&A.. :hehe
Tiffykins30 07-13-2008, 11:38 PM Definitely Yes ! ! !
I am not trying to be pompous or arrogant, but I truly believe I'm a very attractive woman. I don't care what my pant size is, I'm gorgeous, and my husband seems to agree. . .
Loretta 07-13-2008, 11:38 PM I have always been a proud stick, because that's just how I am made:lol I am really enjoying these pregnancy boobs, though! It annoys me when anyone feels they can comment on my size simply because I'm smaller than them. It doesn't matter WHAT size someone is, does it?
IMO, I think health dictates "pretty" in most cases, regardless of size. Skin, teeth, and hair are the first things most people notice. I always notice a beautiful complexion way before I would think twice about someone's weight!

You're gorgeous, and I agree.. I also think confidence says a lot about a person... a lot can be percieved just from how a person carrys themselves.
Navgirl 07-13-2008, 11:48 PM Yes!
harrisonsdream 07-13-2008, 11:52 PM yes absolutely
Mrs.Highfill 07-13-2008, 11:53 PM Definitely Yes ! ! !

mrspollak 07-14-2008, 12:47 AM Yes! Real girls have curves!
:agree
Tiffykins30 07-14-2008, 01:02 AM Yes you are GORGEOUS!!

SezzySue 07-14-2008, 01:15 AM 100% yes they can
sierramist87 07-14-2008, 01:24 AM of course they can! Its all about personality that makes a person pretty sometimes. Being beautiful on the inside makes the beauty on the outside shine so much more!
missjenn00 07-14-2008, 01:24 AM yes
Purpur 07-14-2008, 02:04 AM and the 2 chickens who voted no? Why not comment?
Bryanna 07-14-2008, 02:05 AM and the 2 chickens who voted no? Why not comment?
they know they will be jumped. and they will be.
especially after the recent fiasco with andrews wifey
HollyJay 07-14-2008, 02:35 AM I would totally love to hear from the two "no" voters, but alas! We never will. DH likes only two body types: full-figured, and sporty. He's ridiculously athletic and built, and I'm full-figured, and we're an insanely hot couple, and we made a gorgeous baby. So there. ;)
WGs_Grrl 07-14-2008, 09:57 AM probably someone wanting to be different..... like the audience members on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. When the question is "what do you put on a hamburger bun" , someone always has to say soup or something else to be different. But maybe they really do feel that way though....
Wait....you DON'T put soup on a hamburger bun!!?!? :confuzzle
CRAP! That's explains ALL my life's woes :suspect
:lol
Berkley 07-14-2008, 10:15 AM My gosh woman! You're absolutely gorgeous, you have a hot husband (shhhhh, don't tell him I said that, grin), your boys are just adorable..... seriously, if you start feeling down about yourself, PM me and I'll remind you how beautiful you are.

Ohhhhh yes they will be. I voted yes but for sure if I voted no. NO WAY would I comment
*Sarah* 07-14-2008, 10:25 AM definalty, just like skinny girls can be ugly
LaneyBug 07-14-2008, 10:35 AM Yeah, one lady who I think is one of the prettiest women I have ever seen is the lady who played Suki on Gilmore Girls, Melissa McCarthy.
little.lili 07-14-2008, 10:37 AM definalty, just like skinny girls can be ugly
LOLLLLL I was writing my post... looked up... and damn it... you said it 1st :lmao
I've seen MANY beautiful women who are by no means "skinny"
Christy 07-14-2008, 10:37 AM Yes, most definitely!!!:yes
mpicky 07-14-2008, 11:28 AM Yes, of course!
anmiller86 07-14-2008, 11:45 AM fat skinny green or furry, how beautiful you are depends more on who you are than what you look like. skinny people can be hideous if they are not a kind and loving person. fat people are gorgeous if their heart is in the right spot. but i'm not a shallow person. i used to be, but now i see that looks will only get you so far in life. who you are as a person should be what defines you, not what you appear to be from the outside.
(and BTW curves are soo sexy ;) )
Antonia 07-14-2008, 12:34 PM I voted yes. There are hideous fat women and hideous skinny women. There are gorgeous fat women and gorgeous skinny women.
*Samantha* 07-14-2008, 12:38 PM 3 people voted no! WTF! You can vote but not fess up! You know what that means WUSS!!!! Afraid of how all us curvier woman will react!!! LOL
rosebud* 07-14-2008, 12:46 PM people can vote how they want they don't need to fess up ( and no I didn't vote no) they may not feel the need to 'defend' themselves if that is how they feel. no need for everyone to try and beat them down.
Personally i think size has zero to do with how 'pretty' you are. I think that most women sell themselves short simply because of a number on a tag in some jeans. I'm no size 2 ( and never will be just not in the genes for me) and I think i'm pretty done cute looking.
njngwife 07-14-2008, 12:48 PM absolutly
Those saying it is inner beauty that matters, are you saying essentially, then, that overweight people are not as OUTWARDLY pretty as those that are thin, in general?
I really think of pretty as a word to describe physical traits, not inward ones.
Chelly 07-14-2008, 12:54 PM Yes! Some of the prettiest women to me have meat on their bones/are healthy.
WGs_Grrl 07-14-2008, 12:57 PM Those saying it is inner beauty that matters, are you saying essentially, then, that overweight people are not as OUTWARDLY pretty as those that are thin, in general?
I really think of pretty as a word to describe physical traits, not inward ones.
Pretty refers to someone's facial features, not their figure. So, if you're asking about someone's FIGURE, you need another word...

Midge.T 07-14-2008, 01:23 PM If someone truly feels that simply being overweight makes a person ugly and is afraid to stand up for it, how whole-heartedly could they possibly believe it?
monkeyinabarrel 07-14-2008, 04:09 PM yes, i consider pretty more of a facial description
*FCZsGirl* 07-14-2008, 04:22 PM hell yeah
Jillove27 07-14-2008, 04:27 PM Yup, they are beautiful no matter how much they weight.
SIMMYBABEZ 07-14-2008, 04:32 PM Absolutely!
SIMMYBABEZ 07-14-2008, 04:33 PM yes, i consider pretty more of a facial description
Me too!
Your body has nothing to do with how pretty you are.
cerau2 07-14-2008, 04:33 PM totally!
Pretty refers to someone's facial features, not their figure. So, if you're asking about someone's FIGURE, you need another word...
how do you get that?
from dictionary.com...
1. pleasing or attractive to the eye, as by delicacy or gracefulness

the board froze when i was going to respond to this. lol so i'm back
Personally i believe in lots of things and i vote accordingly i don't have to back up my belief especially if people are going to do nothing but berate me for my choice or thought. So you can believe in things without having to give why you believe it.

I agree with you on this. People get so mean on here sometimes when someone isn't part of the popular opinion. If I was one of the girls who voted no I wouldn't say shit either. A lot of the time I vote in polls and don't leave a comment. :shrug I may not agree with those who voted no but they have every right to feel that way and if they don't want to respond because they know people on here will probably get outright cruel to them then I don't blame them at all. :)
I hate it when people ask me to explain why I feel the way I do. Sometimes I just feel that way and it's hard to explain exactly why I do.

Why would anyone? I see an awful lot of teeth being bared (and not just Berk's shark).

It's more about the vernacular in which it is used than a dictionary definition.. You don't typically hear people describe another person's body as "pretty". Gorgeous, sure. Shapely, sure. When you hear someone say, "She's pretty", it's common knowledge and an automatic assumption that they're referring to her face.
Midge.T 07-14-2008, 05:36 PM I 100% agree that if you're in the minority opinion, you're going to get run over a cheese grater regardless of how serious the topic at hand is. I'm not saying people don't have the right to feel the way they do if it's contrary to popular belief, only that if it's something you believe to the bone it's worth defending.
At the very least, it's worth admitting to. There are tactful ways of saying things and people are easy enough to ignore if they get ignorant towards you.
If there's no way to explain it without insulting someone, perhaps it's time to reevaluate the way you're thinking. KWIM?
Aunt Sponge 07-14-2008, 05:44 PM Diving right on in without reading any replies, of course!
:lol Of course! Beauty is NOT related to body-fat percentage.
Just the same way there are a LOT of butt ugly skinny arsed people in the world :yes
Regardless of HOW you look, how fat or skinny you are or how much or little makeup you wear, muffin top and all.
SOME people will think you're OK looking.
SOME people will think you're ugly as hell.
And SOME people will think you're freaking awesome!
And SOME people just won't give a crap because looks don't mean anything to them.
proudofmysailor 07-14-2008, 06:08 PM Absolutely!!

based on some of the comments in this thread ( ie why are they chicken to post) i think their answers would be considered insulting period.
I don't get why we have to make those people show themselves, they obviously believe what they believe and no explanation will change how i feel..... So it's a moot point.

I look at it a little differently- sometimes, when people don't feel like they HAVE to defend themselves or their position, they're more honest. I'll always trust the results of an anonymous poll more than one where you can track down the person's response. That's why pollsters make such a big deal of telling everyone how anonymous their results are going to be, so they can get more honest, open answers.
Nickelknack 07-14-2008, 06:16 PM Yes. :D Pretty/gorgeous/good looks come in ALL shapes and sizes. ;)

I guess I just think you are wrong.
I think when someone is "pretty" you are describing the whole package, otherwise, you'd say they have a "pretty face"
Berkley 07-14-2008, 06:38 PM I agree with you on this.
:hail I love you!
If I was a 'no' voter, I wouldn't come in here to admit it.
Why would anyone? I see an awful lot of teeth being bared (and not just Berk's shark).
Bruce is the bomb!! He's a vegetarian I promise :D :D

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ChewiesBaby 07-14-2008, 07:50 PM CAN they? of course...
Are they always? not necessarily... depends on personal preference I suppose.
My husband finds me madly appealing and sometimes I wonder how but he loves every inch of me. He doesn't find thin women attractive at all. That's not to say that thin women CAN'T be attractive, just not to him. Does that make sense? I mean, he doesn't demean them or belittle them, he just wouldn't be physically attracted to them personally. I think to say that they CAN'T be pretty is very judgmental because it implies that just because it's one person's view, doesn't make it EVERYONE'S view, kwim?
USNIwife 07-14-2008, 07:51 PM of course!
mccutched 07-14-2008, 08:19 PM yes , anyone who think otherwise in my thoughts are kind of shallow... i belive there are some larger women who are more beautiful then the twiggy women.
( no offense meant to anyone )
WGs_Grrl 07-14-2008, 08:24 PM I guess I just think you are wrong.

We can agree to disagree. How about that? ;) Everyone has different experiences that contribute to why they may think something, right?
Green~Mammy 07-14-2008, 08:33 PM This is why I dislike anon polls we have a rule on another board all polls must show who votes what. If you feel strongly enough to vote a certain way then you should be able to own your thoughts regardless of the heat they might incur.
CrankyDiva 07-14-2008, 08:33 PM I wouldn't be surprised if two or three of the three votes were actually cast by three guys in the age range of 18-25.

It's not a matter of making them show themselves in order to be able to burn them at the stake. It just seems strange to me to go as far as to vote only to be afraid to stand behind it. I've seen people give their opinions on whether someone should be pregnant, marrying or dating, moving, working, etc. Sometimes it's a tact, enlightening and helpful response and sometimes no, but I fail to see why speaking your mind on this particular subject would be taboo.
I also agree anonymous polls yield more honest results, but I also feel if someone believes something but hides their identity to avoid what others may think of it, it negates that honesty. Why go so far as to vote, then?
I'm not demanding these people get outed. I understand why it's probably better they aren't known. Heck, it could have been an error or a male vote or any number of things and it's not worth arguing over. I do think it brings up an interesting point about controversial polls/issues, though.
Bryanna 07-14-2008, 08:40 PM I wouldn't be surprised if two or three of the three votes were actually cast by three guys in the age range of 18-25.
I think that is really unfair to males in that age rage. My husband thinks I am gorgeous. not ALL 18-25 year old men think you have to be skinny to look good.. and not all 26+ men think otherwise.
I think it is just as plausible that it was a woman of ANY age.
TylersPootie 07-14-2008, 08:41 PM OH heck yes!!!!!!!!!
To me, weight has nothing to do with the attractiveness of someone, I know and have seen plenty of "bigger" girls who i'd gladly kill for their faces, skin, hair, whatever
Danielleie 07-14-2008, 08:43 PM yes they can!! im a chubby girl lol but my face is damn cute i think!
Theresa 07-14-2008, 08:50 PM I voted yes. However you can also be fat and ugly, skinny and pretty, and skinny and ugly. Depends on who is looking at you and what they think "pretty" looks like.
CrankyDiva 07-14-2008, 08:52 PM I think that is really unfair to males in that age rage. My husband thinks I am gorgeous. not ALL 18-25 year old men think you have to be skinny to look good.. and not all 26+ men think otherwise.

No where did I state anything about your husband or comment that all young men in this age bracket had the same mentality; I only stated that it wouldn't surprise me if they were males between the ages of 18-25 because it has been my experience and observation that younger males tend to have more shallow perceptions of beauty.
SemperFiWife 07-14-2008, 08:56 PM Yes of course! ....thats a silly question! Okay personally I think that beauty doesn't come on the outside but what is on the inside! If you aren't beautiful inside you will NEVER be beautiful on the outside. My mom has said this to me since I was old enough to remember! I truely believe this! Oh also when I was 'overweight' for my height ...DH said I was a hamster and that he thought I was sexier than ever (he always thought I was TO skinny!!) My mom is over weight and I think she is one of the prettiest women ever!
kiwijus 07-14-2008, 08:57 PM Oh, Eelo, it didn't quote you, but I love you. Like whoa. :loveEelo :wubThis is why I dislike anon polls we have a rule on another board all polls must show who votes what. LOL I get jumped on these boards if I make my polls public if they're about "sensitive" subjects.

No shit. I think women have more skewed visions of "beauty" because we're programmed so. My DH thinks I'm SMOKING hot, but me? Not so much. (But secretly? I'm smoking!)
Shannon Marie 07-14-2008, 08:58 PM I know many woman who are overweight but their faces are drop dead gorgeous so YES!
EmeraldEyes 07-14-2008, 09:12 PM Of course!! DH doesn't find thin women attractive at all. Do I think I'm pretty?? Depends on the day:D

ITA! I started putting on weight after I had Ethan but DH can't keep his hands off of me. He does want me to lose some weight but thats so i can walk better not so I look hot.
~shay~ 07-14-2008, 09:24 PM yes ofcorse

yeah, but I was just saying that it is obvi. not "common knowledge" faces and personalities was not the point of the poll :D
ChewiesBaby 07-14-2008, 09:51 PM yeah, but I was just saying that it is obvi. not "common knowledge" faces and personalities was not the point of the poll :D
Maybe the poll should have been "Do you find 'fat' women attractive?" because asking if they CAN be pretty is not really a poll question... of course they CAN be, that should be common knowledge. It's like asking if women can be short and pretty or black and pretty, etc... of course all women CAN be pretty to someone but ARE they to the poll member would be a matter of opinion and might be easier to poll. Just wondered about the wording of the poll.

I worded the poll based on something that was specifically said to me that peaked my curiosity.

It's common knowledge to you and I but suprisingly some people actually think that overweight people cannot possibly be considered pretty, hence the question.

That just baffles me... so a question like "can someone be short AND pretty?" would be considered a valid question? I'm asking in all seriousness. If physical characteristics are so important to whether or not someone CAN be pretty period then how about "can someone be black AND pretty?" Questions like that are just ridiculous IMO. Of course people CAN be pretty or attractive even though SOME may not personally find them aesthetically pleasing or be sexually attracted to a physical characteristic.
Was your conclusion that this ex is a total douche?? :lol I would think that these poll results were overwhelming by more than just a landslide...

The question is rediculous, though if someone had hurt me by saying something equally stupid like 'mixed race people are ugly' I'd probably be seeking reassurance and support too.
Green~Mammy 07-15-2008, 04:31 PM Kiwi I too got jumped on for making *gasp* public poll LOL. I just think it is funny that people don't want to own their thoughts and prefer to remain unknown.
Midge.T 07-15-2008, 04:38 PM Thinking back, I don't think I've ever made a poll here, but other places I browse I typically do make them public. Especially the smaller forums where I know the group a while. It's as important to know who thinks they way they do along with what the majority is. I like being able to tap that person on the shoulder and ask how they've come to think the way they do.
If things can stay civil, it can be pretty enlightening. (Truthfully if they don't stay civil it's even more revealing. lol) But I like seeing what makes people tick and enjoy that sort of brain picking session.
The subject could probably be its own thread with its own contraversy.
Berkley 07-15-2008, 04:40 PM Kiwi I too got jumped on for making *gasp* public poll LOL. I just think it is funny that people don't want to own their thoughts and prefer to remain unknown.
I think a public poll will only garner in most cases the popular answer. Had this been a public poll there more then likely would have been no no's. And really can you imagine how bad it would be if someone got on here and said yep I said no. Oh My Gosh they would be verbally torn limb from limb.

Yep Yep and Yep
kiwijus 07-15-2008, 05:48 PM Then why even vote, though? Just to let people know that there are, in fact, people who believe that heftier women can't be beautiful? That if you weigh more than the doctor says you should, you're ugly by default?
So, they're going to SAY these things by voting, but not have the balls to say, "Hey, this is how I think." All that purpose serves is, it makes people MORE insecure about posting, and pictures at that, because they don't know who thinks they're ugly
i did not realise this poll would get so big. I posted it as an anon. poll intentionally. i too think those that voted no should not announce who they are. they'd be treated like shit.
andrews_wifey 07-15-2008, 07:20 PM exactly, those who speak up shouldn't be afraid but this is a sensitive topic and it's like asking to be burned at the stake simply for having an opinion different than someone else's seen it WAY to many times!
JLeigh 07-15-2008, 07:33 PM Of course people can be both "fat" and pretty. I think some of the prettiest people I've seen are overweight. If a person is really beautiful, it doesn't matter if they have a little extra weight on them.
angies367 07-15-2008, 07:34 PM Yep!
ChewiesBaby 07-15-2008, 07:47 PM Well, I think like all things on here... if they do come out and say they said no then it will blow up but then die out and everyone will get over it and move on. Poor villagers.. no one to burn at the stake! S'mores maybe?? Fatties like s'mores... :giggle Sorry, couldn't resist... I'm a fatty and I LOVE me some s'mores!!! And if some douche ex or anyone else for that matter doesn't think I'm pretty then ladee fuckin'da... awl dat madders is dat me luva tinks me hauwt... :yes (that rape & pillage of the English language was just for you eelo... :wink )

square bear 07-15-2008, 07:51 PM You can most definitely be fat and pretty!
I personally do not feel pretty when I'm overweight though. Some of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen have the most fabulous curves :smitten

HollyJay 07-15-2008, 10:43 PM I don't want to hear from the people who said no because I'm up in arms over their opinion, but because I would love to see someone with the balls to state an opinion they know is against the norm.
I'm fat, and I wouldn't be offended by it.
It doesn't hurt me if someone thinks I'm not pretty because I'm fat. I don't consider it superficial either. Attraction and beauty are a matter of personal preference. For example: I don't think red-headed men are good-looking, and DH isn't attracted to skinny women. I don't consider either of us superficial, because I don't consider red-headed men as lesser people, nor does DH consider skinny women second-class citizens. They're just not physically attractive to us.
A superficial person would say that I am not a good person, or refuse to be friends with me, because I am fat. Not finding me attractive is just a preference issue. I have friends I think are ugly, but they're still good people with wonderful hearts and I love them dearly.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you think someone is worth less because they are fat, that is wrong, but it's completely in your right to find them unattractive. I don't know why physical attractiveness is a required trait in a good person.
kristen524 07-15-2008, 10:44 PM of course!
that's the most ridiculous freakin question i've ever heard.
Purpur 07-15-2008, 10:59 PM I'd like to know who looks at my scale and just automatically thinks I'm ugly. Not to burn them, not to yell at them, just to know that such a person is so totally prejudiced against me because of my weight....
and so I can put them on my ignore list, because anything else they have to say isn't something I care to read.
am I a bitch for that? yep
I don't get why everyone is so upset that people think that way?
I asked this question because I KNOW some people do think that way. And quite honestly, I think a lot more people on this board do but didn't want to be hurtful and say so.
I could not care less who it is that said no. I was just curious the percentage of people on here that thought the same way someone in my real life does.
I realise now that I probably didn't get accurate results and this was probably not worth it.
HollyJay 07-15-2008, 11:16 PM I'd like to know who looks at my scale and just automatically thinks I'm ugly. Not to burn them, not to yell at them, just to know that such a person is so totally prejudiced against me because of my weight....

But I don't think it's "prejudice" to think someone is unattractive because they're fat. It would be prejudice to think they're a bad person because of it, but seriously, you're allowed to think someone is not pretty but still the most amazing person ever...
I'm not saying I feel this way about overweight people, just that if someone else does they are within their rights to do so.
mbfcds119 07-15-2008, 11:16 PM Of course! Being pretty has nothing to do with weight. To me, beauty can come from the inside as well as the outside. Anyone who says differently is not very pretty themself.

ChewiesBaby 07-16-2008, 07:59 AM I don't see why this poll wouldn't be accurate. It's not like anyone is coming out and saying that they voted no and two more people have voted that way since all the uproar about it started. I don't think they are scared to click the second option and walk away... which is what they are doing. Does take much courage to just click and lurk. I would say this is probably fairly accurate to this point.
I think overweight people CAN be pretty... not saying I think ALL are but they absolutely are capable of attractiveness. Anyone who states that overweight people absolutely are incapable of being pretty to anyone has bigger issues than this poll.
NWnavywife 07-16-2008, 11:43 AM In Samao I would be very attractive to the men there . France they would be digusted . Take me to the Middle East and let me be a belly dancer and they would come in throngs to admire me ...the USA ...well depends on who you talk to .
The point is that beauty is a culture concept along with personal preference .Our culture is inundated with the fact that one must be slim to be attractive . Some just dont prefer those with extra on their bodies .
Beauty is subjective , culturally and personally . It doesnt surprise me that some would vote no . The beauty within can show and make the person attractive aswell but those traits usually dont come till we meet a person for a while . First impressions though mean a lot though we wish they wouldnt , we base our inital judgements by outer appearance ...programed to do that or choice to do that ...not sure but it seems to be the way of it .

MsHolda 07-17-2008, 02:17 AM Here's a couple of paintings from the 1600s....voluptuous (they weren't call FAT) women were considered beautiful. I love the Renaissance period in art. It always makes me feel beautiful. :)
This painting is titled "The Three Graces"
