I am trying to decide on which housing I want to live in. When we were there last I was fairly unconcerned about it since it was just elementary school, but we plan to stay there for good after this move and I would prefer my kids went to the better of our options for middle and high school.

So Halsey Terrace has Moanalua middle and high schools. And Catlin Park has Aliamanu Middle and Radford High. I seem to recall Radford not having the greatest rep, but maybe I am wrong.

So where do I want to live ladies? Halsey or Catlin?

Anyone? I guess Ford Island housing is another option too.

I think for Ford Island, they'd go to Radford High School. *I* personally, wouldn't want to live on an island, with there only being one way in and one way out. Occasionally they have bridge closures too between certain hours of the day. That would annoy me....LOL!!!

On greatschools.net Moanalua has a better rating than Radford. When living in Hawaii, I heard more bad things about Radford and never once heard anything bad about Moanalua. :shrug

Also Halsey seems to be more off the main road than Catlin Park. Catlin Park is directly off Nimitz.

I have no clue, I'm on the other side of the mountain. I hope you can get some info from the ladies that live on that side!

I was leaning toward Halsey too just because of the school and the fact that there is a neighbourhood pool there now too.

Now my next mission is to find out whether they carpet the bedrooms or if they are all tile.

I've been into a couple Halsey homes and they are carpeted now! The old ones that were torn down were all linoleum. :)

DO NOT send your child to radford.....it's a nightmare. My son will be entering 7th grade and I am really really glad we'll be moving at the end of next year......I can't envision sending him to high school here....I just can't.

Ford Island Housing is nice, but I wouldn't want to live there either......Halsey is alot nicer. I don't generally like the Pearl Harbor area at all.......I think it's too crowded, but Halsey would be okay.

My son goes to Aiea High, but between Radford and Moanalua High schools, I would definitely go with Moanalua...

Before moving into base housing we lived in Aiea, so we just got a district exception for him to stay there, although we live in the Moanalua district.

Good luck!

That didn't seem like a bad school either. We lived on Hakina St when I first moved to Hawaii in 2003. We were within walking distance of Aiea High. :)

It isn't really any more crowded that the area I live in now. That's what I remember about Radford too! Thanks!

We are moving to Catlin in a few weeks and my kids go to Pearl Harbor Kai and we LOVE it. I did a GE but luckily after the move we'll be zoned for PHK already.

Can't help you w/high schools,etc.

Some areas in Halsey are linoleom (they look like tile) in the downstairs. The homes are very nice in both Halsey and Catlin Park.

Halsey gets more traffic because of the way it's made, and Catlin they figured it out and made most of it "loops" so the homes are all on a big loop so there's no thru traffic. I know my friends in Halsey have issues w/the traffic and speeders and people cutting thru.

I can scan the Catlin neighborhood layout if it's not online and post it for you if you want.

Personally, I'd pick Ford Island 10000% over Halsey and Catlin. Why? Ford Island is totally secure. The neighborhoods in the Salt Lake area have all had problems and now have alarms in the homes.

The only reason I am not wanting Ford Island is because of the sizes of the bedrooms. The master BRs are big, but then the rest of them are like 9x10 or something like that. We are eventually going to have 3 girls in one room and two boys in another and I can't put them in rooms that small. The rooms in Halsey are a little bigger. I did hear about the break-ins in the salt lake homes though.

Traffic I am not too concerned about. I deal with it here. We live on one of the busiest streets that goes through housing.

I am also loving the fact that there is a new pool in the Halsey neighbourhood. :teehee

Wow! That's a lot of kids! Shouldn't you be rating a larger home than a 3 br?

Halsey homes have dens downstairs, which I'm not sure if Catlin or Ford Island do. Or at least some do. I've only been in Halsey homes that are a few years old.

I've already heard of problems w/the Halsey pool too, LOL. I have friends that live in both Radford and Halsey and have all had issues. But, like I said, I'm moving near there just to be closer to base. If I could get new stuff on Ford Island I'd jump at it. Plus there is a pool right there next to the chief and O housing, plus a new community center I believe. It has a "kids zone" in it as well. But it's all in what you are looking for.

Good luck! Won't a lot of it depend on what's available for you when you get here? I know when we PCSed here we had our sights set on one housing but got offered some other choices because we had to take what was open or lose TLA .We couldn't afford to foot our own hotel bill. Love the Navy LOL!

We will get a 4 bedroom. The problem is 2 of the 5 kids are only with us for a total of 2 months per year. We can't agree on how to split them all up so it is just easier to lump them all together and keep the 4th bedroom as a guest room. And the den will be used for a play room for all of them.

And yes it can depend on what is available when we get there, but I can base my move on when a unit will be available. And I must admit we have some pretty sweet hookups.

What are the problems you are hearing about with the pool?
