The video of the 8 year old breastfeeding made me think...children, girls specifically, are maturing earlier and earlier.

Do you cut your female child off from breastfeeding regardless once she starts showing signs of puberty? Or do you still let her self-wean?

I'm sorry... I was a bfing mama... however once my children could form a sentence to speak to me or verbally ASK me for a drink... they were DONE DONE DONE.

Eight years old! Please that's no longer for the benefit of the child, that's to fulfill some disgusting sexual exploration of the mother.

:agree

my child won't be breastfeeding past a year.

[& that's the absolute max]

there's a chance i may start him/her on formula earlier, especially if just my milk isn't filling them up enough.

I mean some girls are forming breasts and starting periods at 8 now. So do you still breastfeed if those things come up?

BTW, I'm not saying this is the case in the Youtube video from the other thread. It just raised the thought in my head.

At 8 years of age they should be drinking from a cup. Once they can hold a cup and drink without spilling, then no more bottle, no more boob. 1 yr is a max for the boob anyway for me.

I wonder what Jamie's thoughts are on this?

:dunno I am certain she hasn't breastfed any of her kids up to puberty either, so no idea what her thoughts are, but I'm sure she'll chime in when she's on later. :)

I hope so. I'm all for self-weaning but with puberty starting earlier and earlier it makes me think. :)

I guess "To each their own" is out of the question:rolleyes

I plan on bf'ing this one as long as we both have a good relationship. I did that with Trent and it ended at 17.5 months.

I totally get that. I guess I'm wondering if the early onset of puberty would change that relationship?

I really dont know. I bet if everyone stop feeding their kids all the process chicken puberty would not come so early:giggle

LOL... I don't think there's anyone on here who could offer a straight answer from experience. I don't think there is a huge population of women out there who thinks about BFing in terms of dealing with a pubescent child................................

Personally, once the kids are old enough to drink from a cup, I pump. I highly doubt I will continue to do that until they are 12, but you never know. :rofl I guess if for some odd reason I do, I'll let you know in 12 years:lol

I wish I could contact that lady and ask her. I mean like if her 8 year old starts developing breasts would she cut her off?

I have no earthly idea I have not breast fed that long and currently have no plan too. I DO know that the biological norm for a human primate would be 2.5 years - 7 years of breastfeeding when compared to other primates along with when we reach the start of sexual maturity and our life span.

For example the lion tailed macaque is breast fed from birth to one year of age the reach sexual maturity around 2.5 - 4 years of age and have a life span in the wild of about 25 - 30 years. They spend one fourth of their youth breastfeeding.

That is looking at it from a pure biology stand point.

Did I kill the thread?

Not for me. You just mostly answered my question. I mean biologically we stop breastfeeding in nature before puberty hits. But with hormones in foods and whatnot, more and more kids (especially) girls are developing sooner. So I guess it'd have to be on a case by case basis?

:lol No idea, the thread was kind of doomed to begin with though since no one here has bf'd their kid that long. :D

yes, I was talking about this with my DH last night. children mature at different rates some children might be emotionally ready to wean at 12 months and just stop nursing slowly. Others might need it for longer as their emotional maturity develops. For me nursing a child that long just will not work because I would be uncomfortable with it, if the mom is uncomfortable then it is time to figure out how to wean. I won't judge other peoples nursing situation though.

Makes sense. I guess it's always just up to the mom to know when to override her kids. I mean with Victoria (from the video) her daughter obviously isn't ready emotionally but how many 8 year olds nowadays are developing breasts or having periods?

I don't think a child needs to BF that long. If you want to continue breastmilk I think that's great just put it in a sippy or cup.
