View Full Version : Fertility medications?
torie. 07-18-2008, 05:02 AM What are your feelings on fertility meds? Perhaps consider both scenarios: Someone who does not need them vs. someone who does.
:edit ETA: A friend and I were discussing what would be the outcome of women who take fertility meds to purposely have multiples. So we began discussing the idea of women who do not need the meds but are trying for med-induced multiples vs. natural multiples. Sorry about not clarifying my debate question!
Debate away! :D
kittieb 07-18-2008, 05:03 AM Why would someone who can get pregnant need fertility treatment?
Isn't that a waste of money?
**don't want to be rude but just wondering**
Berkley 07-18-2008, 05:05 AM If they don't need it then it's pointless IMO
If they do then I hope they can get it :)
SIMMYBABEZ 07-18-2008, 05:05 AM I don't see why anyone would take them if they were not needed at all.. but I do think if by taking them, it's going to help you in some way, no matter how big or small, then I can't see any problem with it.
Now if you were a guy taking woman's fertility pills.. than yeah, I'd probably say it's not the best idea :yes

Yah but my friend and I were talking about it and I said "so basically if you don't really need them but want multiples, it might be worth the money?" And so that's why I threw that in there because I started thinking about natural multiples vs. fertility med-induced multiples.
I'm going to edit my opening post. Sorry for the lack of clarification!
kittieb 07-18-2008, 05:09 AM well I guess if you really wanted multiples then it would be okay.
lol but it isn't a guarantee

Oh, well I was thinking about this the other day. I am not sure where I stand with it.. but I know for me, I'd want it to be natural. I wouldn't want "designer babies" in any form of fashion.
Aurora 07-18-2008, 05:47 AM Fertility meds are awesome for people who need them but I think it is kind of ridiculous to pay all that money to get multiples when you can have a healthy baby on your own. If they're trying for things like sextuplets, they're just asking for a complicated pregnancy and a difficult first few weeks of life for their babies, not to mention all the struggles they may face in the future, and that doesn't seem fair. Even twins or triplets increase the risk to mom and baby. I don't think it is the best decision ever, if they can afford it and they want to do it, more power to 'em I guess.
Green~Mammy 07-18-2008, 11:51 AM I don't care really if their insurance covers it and their DR is fine with it then why am I concerned? Or if they are paying out of pocket it is not my job to be worried about it.
We are going to try to either have my tubes untied or if that won't work IVF. If we do IVF since we will already be paying out of pocket we plan to have the sperm spun to try and up the odds for a girl. If we get twins to boot it would just be a perk.
torie. 07-18-2008, 11:57 AM I personally love the idea of twins... I don't know about triplets. I've never been pregnant so I'm cautious in my thoughts. I personally would love if it were natural because my sister and I think that one of the two of us is up for twins if we get pregnant. I personally would be too scared of any complications that could occur if I ended up being pregnant with multiples, so I don't believe I would purposely want to induce something like that.
What other women choose to do is fine. If I had to take fertility meds, then by all means, I'll take them and trust that my doctors could take care of me if things got complicated. But I don't believe at that time I would insist on trying for multiples if I didn't need fertility meds.

I think that's an abuse of the medication.
sandykay 07-18-2008, 11:59 AM If you can fall preggo naturally then you should not be taking fertility drugs even if it is to get multiples. When taking the drugs there is no garantee thet you will get multiples, so with that it is a waist of money.
I say if you don't need them, don't use them, but each to their own opinion
JustBreathe 07-18-2008, 12:06 PM If there are medications out there to make a man get an erection, there should be medications out there that are supposed to help a woman conceive a baby.
rosebud* 07-18-2008, 12:09 PM i think what someone does with their body is their issues and I have no right to say yay or nay to them. If you want to spend money to get multiples more power to you, makes no difference to me.
LittleMsSunshine 07-18-2008, 08:55 PM If it's not an absolute necessity.... I think they should have to pay out of pocket.
I don't think it's right to take advantage of the insurance company.
EmeraldEyes 07-18-2008, 09:26 PM See, I come from a totally different view. I didn't need them, was told I was infertile anyway, and shouldn't even think about having kids because of medical issues. I was cool with that. I take Metformin for my PCOS induced type 2. It's main side effect is that it's a fertility pill. I was on BC to counteract it and I got pregnant anyway. At the dosage I'm on, the OB/GYN said it was a wonder I didn't have twins!!
I Heart My LT 07-18-2008, 10:20 PM I think they should be used to have a baby... I don't know about all this multiples business.... But I never want children, so I am not sure or clear about the issue.
