I Heart My LT 07-19-2008, 02:06 PM :yay for finding out where you are going! SD is gorgeous.
snowhite634 07-19-2008, 03:07 PM oohh ur lucky! if db would decide to stay in and not get out of the usmc...i'd wanna go to cali too!
i cant offer advice as id never been! but yay!!!!!! thats so cool you get to go there!! im jealous!!
mitziebella 07-19-2008, 03:13 PM I lived in Murphy Canyon housing when we were there, its very nice and calm there. I lived on the canyon side and it was a beautiful view from my backyard. I love it there and it just seems surreal most days. I miss it very much!
Congrats on finally getting orders!
wcchick712 07-19-2008, 03:15 PM Hey, im in SD! I know a lot of people decide to buy or rent out in poway, or caramel mountain area to save money on housing but you're making up what you're saving in your commute.
Also I know people rent in chula vista and that might actually be a choice for you because the naval bases are close to there. Just FYI, its pretty much mexi-cali. Take from that what you will.
I'm not navy, so I don't know too much about the bay area, which is a lot of where you will be probably looking (maybe!?)
But I'm in Santo Terrace/Murphy Canyon housing, 15 mins from downtown.
I know someone else just posted a vent about base housing being a good 6 month wait, but (no offense to her) you just gotta keep calling and calling and asking what your position is, they'll get sick of you and give you a house.
I know a lot of USMC housing is offered to navy as well, which in that case there are TERRIBLE WAITS HERE!!
Um, do you have pets or kids? Pets will place you in very limited housing. if you dont, omg you have free rein.
i would definitely stay away from the large plex's of apartment (monte vista, potifino etc) They're (no offense) OUT OF EVERYONES PRICE RANGE THANK YOU. They're like 1800/mo and there still you have to make 3x that in a month to be qualified for an apartment. oh and they're like 600-800 sq ft. no!
Pebbles 07-19-2008, 03:17 PM Congratulations on the orders :woot
chellekay 07-19-2008, 03:25 PM I use to live in Santo Terrace (http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/sandiego/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=41&Itemid=)/Murphy Canyon housing and I loved it there. I love the layout of the house. they are 4plexs, but I still loved the house. In fact when dh gets back from deployment we will moving back there again! I am not a fan of Orleck Heights (http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/sandiego/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34&Itemid=42) and Aero Ridge (http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/sandiego/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=) but I have friends in both neighborhoods and they like them. What I don't like about them is you have to go down a long hall way just to get to your front room. And then it is not really a front room it is more like a great room.
I also lived in La Mesa area and loved it there too.
lacy+chk 07-19-2008, 03:29 PM we're north of san diego by camp pendleton, but definitely enjoy living off base more than on because we get a break from military life!
:goodluck with housing and the move!
square bear 07-19-2008, 03:30 PM OMG I'm so jealous! SD is so pretty! DB never lived on base but he showed me the on-base housing at NAS North Island and it was so nice! Which of he two is your man getting orders for? Either way Coronado (the most delightful neighborhood) ever is near by for nights out and mini-adventures. When the time comes I'm going to have to tell you a list of my favorite restaurants :D
MelissaMc424 07-19-2008, 03:47 PM Congrats... we live in Lofgren Terrace housing, and it's fairly nice.. It's also usually on the "hot sheet" that housing has.. which means there are usually units available immediately.
Places like Serra Mesa, Murphy Canyon, NTC and Silver Strand are going to have the longest wait times...
JustMrsJoann 07-19-2008, 07:10 PM We know that we want A/C where ever we live. And, I was reading that some of the military housing does not have A/C. I mean, it's Cali, where it gets 100 degrees, how can you NOT have air?
I'll look into those places.
And, the only thing he's told me so far is that it's the San Diego Navy Base..
And, we do have 1 child, a son, who's 9 months old now.

Is the Lincoln one called Regents Court?
exsNohs 07-19-2008, 07:23 PM chula vista is pretty much the nicest, prettiest area in SD near naval bases. its really beautiful and clean. lofgren terrace is housing in that area. we lived there for 2 years and liked it. we needed a 3 bedroom once i got pregnant, but the wait time for 3 bedrooms are really long there. [2 bedrooms are not] we now live in cholloas heights. very close to 32nd street base, not so much traffic. after looking at all the navy housing, this is the biggest, most spacious, and i love it. theyre beautiful homes. if i could only have this house in the chula vista area, itd be perfect! lol. were moving to japan in 2 months though! oh, also, since you have a baby. these also have tons of playgrounds all around the community. for every 5-10 homes. our back yard patio gate opens up to a gated playground with swings and everything. my kids are the only ones that use it too, its nice. its right in our backyard! lol.
good luck!

most places here in SD dont have A/C. its difficult to find a place you like, in a location you like, without a long wait time, with A/C. it sucks but were doing fine. we bought a window ac unit for upstairs and an indoor one. and we have a few fans.
JustMrsJoann 07-19-2008, 07:37 PM wow. I guess I've just never lived in a place that didn't have A/C. I'm from FL.
So, I guess check out Chula Vista then?
I didn't know there were other bases besides the SD one??!!
Gillian_Angela 07-19-2008, 07:38 PM WOW you are lucky! There are tons of awesome women out there!! :D goodluck!!
butterflykiss 07-19-2008, 07:49 PM grats, good luck
thistooshallpass 07-19-2008, 07:54 PM wow. I guess I've just never lived in a place that didn't have A/C. I'm from FL.

i never turn my a/c on here! it doesn't get that hot because it is a coastal climate. it's been around 75 every day recently. and there is practically no humidity in the summer, so it feels much cooler than other places with the same temp (i lived in pensacola for a year so i know what florida summer humidity is like!)
we live in downtown SD, and i love it (if you like a more urban setting). DF runs two miles to work every day (when he's not deployed, haha), so the location has been great for him.
good luck finding a place to live!
JustMrsJoann 07-19-2008, 07:56 PM Thank you ladies!
We're pretty excited to be moving here and can't WAIT!!! Can Feb. come soon enough?
Ariel 07-19-2008, 09:01 PM we just moved to San Diego in March. When we got here we got offered a house in Serra Mesa w/Central Air. I like it, its nice! Even though it does say there's a wait... some times there isn't :)

Most places that don't have A/C allow you to install your own window units. We went without our first year here (couldn't afford a unit) and got one this spring.. It works great for the main living area. :wink
NB San Diego is 32nd. St. Is he going to be on sea or shore?

Not necessarily.. the area where housing is in Chula, is very nice. Eastlake, Otay Ranch, San Miguel, Rolling Hills, and Bonita are all great areas.
OP, if you rent down here, stay East of 805 if you're going to live in Chula.. West of 805 is the "mexi cali" side.
RunAwayLove 07-19-2008, 09:21 PM i LOVE it here:D
housing that ive been to that i like is Tierrasanta which is nice
and Lofgren Terrace which i LOVE i live in chula vista which is where lofgren is and i love it SO much more then when i lived in SD its got a smaller town feeling and i can get to 32nd st and coronado in 15 minutes:D
aubrey 07-19-2008, 09:28 PM We live at the Village at NTC, and we have central A/C. We love it here, the housing is really nice. It's newer, in a nice area (Point Loma), and it's a nice community. I don't know what the wait is now for housing here, but it was kinda long when we were getting into them. You might want to check it out.
chellekay 07-19-2008, 10:10 PM right before I left SD they were installing A/C unit in all the house in Santo. In fact the house I moved into Aug of 2007 just has A/C (I really regret moving out of it, but plan to move back in to the neighborhood).

Well [despite my "jealousy"] Congratulations! :yes I'm excited for you!!

kathy6504 07-24-2008, 03:08 PM you'll love it here, i promise :]
Ma*Becca 07-24-2008, 03:41 PM We live in Murphy Canyon (santo district) we love it there, and now they are giving everyone central A/C units so when you move it you have AC yay!! lol We had to wait over a year for our AC to be installed but it came right on time. The wait wasnt long at all, we went to housing and told them the date we wanted to move and they had the place ready for us, a whole 2 weeks notice...that was all....all the houses have back yards for pets but you have to maintain the yard yourself.....good luck on the move hope to see you around.
JustMrsJoann 07-24-2008, 04:04 PM How far is Murphy Canon from 32nd St base?
