B/c I know my other posts will turn into a debate if I don't put an actual debate up.. :rofl
Should have thought about this first and combined the poll with this..lol
Anyway Do you agree with illegally downloading music??

I think you should have to pay for the download. That artist created the music and should get the royalties for it. Otherwise, to me it is stealing.

With that said, we have downloaded other music but made sure we had a copy of the cd somewhere. We already owned it.

My BIL is a HUGH downloader of videos and I feel he is stealing all the time. But it is ok.

I kinda do. :lol i mean I borrow CD's from friends and copy music that way as well. To me its no different then when I would record from the radio ( yes i'm dating myself) or other cassette tapes.

Whether you morally should or not...I don't know. I personally think it only hurts the record company not the actual person. I download music but I go to concerts if I like the artist and that's where they make their money.

I'm hooked up with Rhapsody - I love it! I have my computer plugged into my stereo and it's just awesome. I often don't ened to take any music when I drive to the grocery store so it suits my needs...just 12.00/month and I'm candy.

Though I find it pointless to try to control what people will and will not pay for when it comes to music/movies.
If someone is happy with a downloaded rip off or a substandard hocked version then they would never pay for it full, anyway.
Like my Rhapsody - sure, it's just over $100.00/year - however - it would cost me a heck of a lot more than that if I wanted to buy all the albums that my huge variety of music can be found on.

If they were truly up in arms they would shut down all the radio stations - that's free. And they would stop the sale of VCR's and DVR players - that's free, too...well, you get my point.

:agree too. but to anyone who says that not paying for CD's hurts the artist... the majority of the money goes to the record company execs. I wish there was a way to get it directly to the artist (which i think will be coming up next as we move into a more digital age and the need for promotion and distribution wanes).

artists only make money via CD sales when they produce the CD's themselves. they mainly make their money thru tours and concerts things like that.
I know lots of artists HATE the idea of iTunes and napster, because you can buy per song rather then the whole CD. Garth Brooks refuses to allow his music on any pay site. Metallic just recently within a few years started letting iTunes sell their CD's but only as album only.

I think that artists need to realize that the world is changing, we used to have singles once upon a time we don't have those anymore. They trick you into buying a whole cd which sometimes really sucks minus a song or two. No wonder people started downloading things via limewire and bearshare.

I use iTunes (somewhat) but honestly I have over 10,000 songs on my iPod....I love all kinds of music but I don't have $10,000 to shell out for every song....so I use limewire or I'll borrow from friends an upload them that way. That's just me though :dunno

Ooooh, consider me thoroughly intrigued.

Brief background: I work in the music industry. I'm part of a big, bad major company.

One point I will say, is that downloading music illegally (the way the industry is right now), hurts many, many people, not just the "execs." Things of this nature are putting jobs like mine on the line, and I passionately love music and love the work I do. Not paying for music hurts distributors, retailers, publishing companies, and everyone from the big execs to someone fresh out of college who comes to LA or NY trying to get a job in the industry they love.

I don't blame it all on illegal downloading, but music is crazy right now. Thousands of jobs are being lost this year in an industry that is not really all that big. Just keep in mind that it hurts a LOT of average people when you don't pay for things. It's pretty much like shoplifting.

On that note, I don't think the solution is lawsuits and whining, like many of the companies and organizations are resorting to right now. I think we need to find a new medium to survive.

Did you know when radio first began playing recorded music instead of live performances, there was a HUGE movement to stop it claiming that it would take down the industry. Instead it turned out to be one of the greatest promotional vehicles we have available. I think downloading will do something similar, though I don't know how yet. Perhaps it is something like the Rhapsody model, maybe it will turn out like radio where it will all be free and supported through advertising. Who knows? But right now I am working my booty off to try to prove myself because I know that if my company jumps on to the lay-off ship, my job will be one of the first in line to be cut. And that is a pretty nerve-wracking existence.

I guess I have waxed philosophical enough on this, but just wanted to give my perspective. Downloading illegally affects many people, and I would encourage you to purchase music or use legal downloading until a happy medium is reached by everyone.

I think that digital music will do to CD's what CD's did to cassette tapes. The iPod and other digital music players are making CD's pretty much obsolete.

Indeed. But unless we find a way to monetize it that makes everyone happy, a lot of music will no longer be available to the masses as the companies all close down.

I don't pay for downloading. I do, however, go to concerts to support bands/artists that I like.

Hell no.

A large number of my friends are artists, producers, people who make their living off those songs and some of them, despite gold albums, can barely scrape together a tour with gas prices and people downloading versus buying...it's ridiculous.

Selfish people steal, and I try my damndest never to be selfish.

I think that with Ipods that can hold 10,000 plus songs that theres no way that companies can actually expect every person to pay .99 x 10,000 to fill those Ipods up...

I don't care one way or another. I download off LimeWire what I like and if I like the music a whole lot buy the cd for the car and also go to concerts quite frequently. However, some one said that they don't get royalties when things are downloaded. They do, they may or may not get as much, but they still get something, at least when dl'd off of Limewire.

I buy music too, I use itunes (sometimes), I purchase cd's....but if there is a song I want to hear RIGHT NOW....I'm certainly not going to run to Best Buy :shrug

Actually, even making a copy of a CD that you own is copyright infringement.
