View Full Version : Birth Control, Plan B and Abortion

When I was reading through the Plan B thread, I saw a good deal of defense of the use of birth control and Plan B where users were lauded for their self-awareness in not wanting or be capable of supporting a baby at the time. A similar argument can be used with respect to abortion, except that its at a later stage. I was just curious if the same people who supported tradition birth control, Plan B were for or against abortion. If they drew a line for one reason or another. So I'm just doing a little poll to check the spread. I thought it might be interesting to see.

ETA: In the poll, if you support the use of any of these even in only specific circumstances (rape, incest, accidental breakage), then consider yourself supportive of its practice, please. (Example, even if you only support abortion in cases or rape or incest, then you would still check "traditional bc, plan b, and abortion). I'm making the poll black and white for simplicity sake.

Birth Control, Plan B, but not Abortion.

Birth control and Plan B prevent women from becoming pregnant. Abortion is stopping a pregnancy.

I voted for birth control and plan b, but not for abortion. Plan b is there for rape and accidental breakage. My main problem with abortion is that too many people use it as birth control. I believe that life begins at conception. However, I would never try to force my beliefs on someone else just because I disagree with it.

Pro-Choice in EVERYTHING to do with a woman's reproduction from birth control, abortion, to how she gives birth.

I am for methods of birthcontrol that are only effective pre conception. I am against methods of birth control that are effective after conception.

Completely pro-choice. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one. If you don't believe in birth control, don't use it.

In my perfect world, abortion would be safe, legal, and rare.

I am Pro-Choice, but I don't think that Abortions should be used as birth control (In example, a woman my mother worked with had FOUR abortions in less than a year because she didnt want to be pregnant but wouldn't take birth control- thats just irresponsible IMHO). If there are extenuating circumstances, (rape, incest, etc) then I support it. But its each individual womans right to decide what is right for her, although I may not always agree.

That means you are pro-choice, ie. you agree with the right for individuals to choose for themselves. You don't have to think that abortion will ever be the right choice for you in order to be pro-choice. It's about the rights of every individual.

:puzz Do you have reliable sources proving the bolded? I've never seen anything that has proven that. I've also read plan b packets and I'm pretty sure I recall it stating something to the effect that it has not been proven to have any affect if conception has already taken place.

It doesn't "kill" the egg. It prevents it from implanting in the uterine wall.

Not all that different than birth control.

I believe you're thinking of the ru-486 or whatever it is. Plan B is taken long before spermies ever reach the egg.

I believe you're thinking of the ru-486 or whatever it is. Plan B is taken long before spermies ever reach the egg.

RU-486 is basically a synthetic steroid that blocks the production of progesterone, which is the hormone required to maintain the uterine lining during pregnancy. The lack of hormones causes the uterine lining to shed.... causing an abortion.

there are plenty of unwanted children in the world, let alone the country, for them to adopt. if you truly believe everything happens for a reason then you would agree that someone choosing to take a plan B pill is an event that happens for a reason.

whether others can or can not have children is not my fault nor my problem. Just because I happen to have no fertility issues doesn't mean I should have a child I'm not ready for. Also being hispanic with a tan it would be hard to find someone to adopt my child.
There are plenty of children that need homes that people won't adopt because they want an infant...

I'm pro-choice the right for YOU to choose what is best for YOU. not what someone else says is best for you.

I strongly support a woman's right to birth control, Plan B (which does not cause abortion, simply prevents conception), and abortion. I do not feel as though I need to make exceptions or judge any woman's reasons for any of the above. If she wants to use BC, take plan B, or have an abortion, more power to her. It's none of my business getting involved in something so personal.

I chose option 1. I am thoroughly against abortion, and I haven't read enough about Plan B to make a decision, so I'm erring on the side of caution.

That means you are pro-choice, ie. you agree with the right for individuals to choose for themselves. You don't have to think that abortion will ever be the right choice for you in order to be pro-choice. It's about the rights of every individual.

I respectfully disagree. She just said she wouldn't judge someone else for having an abortion. I know lots of people that do things that I think they shouldn't do, but I still love them. That was more the essence than thinking it was ok for them to choose it.

I am very much against abortion, but have never stopped loving and supporting women who have had them.

Most people looking to adopt don't necessarily want to adopt outside their race. They want kids that look like them. and lets face it most people who can afford the expensive private adoption route are white people.

Ok, that is true, I guess people would like to adopt a baby that would eventually look like family. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I thought about adopting also and I guess I did not care what color or nationality my baby would have been as long as I had one.

It is not harder to adopt a non-white child; however, there are many more non-white children who remain in the foster care system because people are not adopting them.

I can support the woman and not the practice. I don't think it should be legal, but I love people who do it anyway. Actions do not define the person. I am not pro-choice, but I love people. Thus, pro-life (I don't like that term much, but I'll use it here).

I'm actually in support of all three. A woman should be able to choose whether or not she becomes a mother. I think that women have many different reasons for having an abortion that varies from a bad decision when voluntarily sleeping with someone, to rape, and I think that Plan B just helps out before it gets to the point of having an abortion. If you can take a pill before you even know you're pregnant, it would cut cost, worry, and a lot of heartache, I think.
