View Full Version : Yet another... GI Bill question.... HELP! MrsKola 07-22-2008, 11:26 PM How long does DH have to be active under the new rules for his GI Bill to be able to be used for me to go to school? He thinks 10, I thought I heard 6. HELP please! Rileysmom 07-22-2008, 11:30 PM If they have served 6, and then promise/enlist for four more (totaling 10), then they can transfer it. :) Merri 07-23-2008, 01:42 AM Do you mean the Montgomery GI bill, or the post 911 GI bill? My understanding was that it was up to the individual services for the post 911 GI bill, and they have yet to issue official policy on that. http://www.gibill.va.gov/S22/Transfer.htm On another website, http://www.gibill2008.org/about.html , I read that it would be allowed based on time in service, something like at least 6 years active duty to transfer to spouses, and 10 years to transfer to children, but I didn't see that info anywhere on the VA website. I just went back and looked at the second website, and I don't see it on there now. Maybe they took it off because there is nothing official? If you are talking about the Montgomery GI Bill, here is the link: http://www.gibill.va.gov/documents/Army_Transferability_to_Dependents.pdf The eligibility is on page two of the above link. MissJasmin25 07-25-2008, 01:53 AM okay wait wait... so post 911 GI Bill can be transferred regardless of service time? (thats what the website made it sound like) Victoria 07-25-2008, 01:55 AM It's also explained in the Navy Times. Rileysmom 07-25-2008, 02:05 AM okay wait wait... so post 911 GI Bill can be transferred regardless of service time? (thats what the website made it sound like) No. Post 9/11, as of the latest info, explains that they have to either have ten years, or have served 6 years, with a promise (I am assuming enlistment) to serve 4 more. |
