I have a friend who is dating a guy who just finished basic and is going into AIT. She has been told that after they get married if there is base housing available they will not receive BAH to live out in town. I told her this was untrue to my knowledge but would check with ya'll.

I don't think that's true... we never looked into base housing at all, just got an apartment. But I really don't know much about it.

You can choose to live on base or off, it has nothing to do with whether there is housing available on post :)

The guys are alotted a certain amount of BAH no matter where they live. My family just PCSed to Fort Bliss and We are living off base whereas a friend of ours is living ON base. We both get an alotted BAH. However, living on base they live in a duplex and it takes ALL their housing allowance but includes water gas and electric, but we moved into a house where no utilities are included and still are NOT over our BAH. It's a personal preference. They won't take it away. If you live on base, get ready to be held up and learn alternate routes, because they shut down certain roads and areas for PT in the morning. You have to stop NO MATTER where you are and yield to troops crossing and so on and so on. We like living off base. It is much nicer then having to deal with the politics in the base communities.
