View Full Version : Question about medical..
elizabethb883 08-06-2008, 05:02 PM I haven't been put on DF's medical insurance yet, now when I get on it what will I be able to recieve?
I have a cracked tooth (it doesn't hurt) and my current insurance won't even touch it :sigh Would they cover it?
sandykay 08-06-2008, 05:05 PM You won't be put on tricare until you are married and he enrolls you in deers and then tricare. Tricare is only for medical when you are stateside? It does cover dental when OCONUS, but while you are stateside dental is separate. It does cost a littl ebit as well, but not as much as it would from other insurance companies. I know the dental covers 2 check ups anually, but I am not sure what else.
rosebud* 08-06-2008, 05:07 PM you will have to be put on Dental which is separate from the Medical. No they usually don't cover things like that fully. You would have a co-pay anywhere from 40-60% i can't remember off the top of my head ( maybe less like i said i'm not familiar with dental)

Good info. I know a lot of places don't cover dental work if it's consider cosmetic.
and you can't get on his insurance until your married.
elizabethb883 08-06-2008, 05:45 PM Its not considered cosmetic- its gonna come down to a root canal.

Regardless- you're not married, so you're not an elible beneficiary. He can't just "put you on his insurance."
Once you're married, you'll be eligible for medical coverage and dental coverage if he selects that. Even if he does, a root canal is considered a Dental procedure and it isn't covered like a medical procedure would be. You'll still have to pay quite a bit, usually 40-60%.
bailliesbags 08-06-2008, 06:35 PM Once you guys get married, you can go online and get on the insurance do it right away after being put on Deers b/c it takes a bit to activate, depending on the part of the month it may be the 1st of the next mo. or the 1st of the month after that.
I don't know the coverage, I haven't used it for anything other then cleanings, but it will cover part of a root canal.
FYI: if you are overseas continue to carry the dental insurance, this way you can go to approved dentist off post. A. Some post are very hard for family members to get into, B. The quailty of the care on post is not quailty C. Don't plan on taking little ones to watch you get teeth cleaned, they won't have it.
elizabethb883 08-06-2008, 06:54 PM I realize I wouldnt be on it for another 2 month

That depends on where you are overseas. Most military overseas facilities have dentists, orthodontists, and other dental specialists (pros, max-facial, OS, etc) so that nobody will have to be referred out in town. In fact, very few places will allow military insurance benefits to be used at a civilian facility unless the military facility specifically refers the patient there, which is highly unlikely unless by "Overseas" you mean Canada, Australia, or some parts of Germany. Medical and dental care in these countries is considered comparable to US standards; in other countries, it's not.
The "quality of care on post" is exactly what you will get by civilian practitioners. Military health care providers are subject to the same educational, licensing and credentialing laws that civilians are subject to. I can not think of ANY overseas dental facility where I would take my family, rather than get them care in a US military dental facility. (((shudder)))
Navgirl 08-06-2008, 10:50 PM Here in Yongsan, Seoul Korea, they pretty much encourage you to go out in town but will take care of you on post if you prefer that, you just have to wait a long time sometimes. The hospital and dental clinics on post are so undermanned now. On post we are authorized one cleaning a year, off post we get out 2 a year and it's covered.

I stand corrected. Being stationed in Korea has changed considerably since I was in that part of the world.
I'm still not sure I'd want to go to an off-post dentist there, though.

Yeah it's changed. I read somewhere before we moved that we weren't allowed to go to any medical facility off post but when we got here and was debriefed they said we had that choice. Plenty of families go to dentists off post and love it. I have had 2 dental clinics referred to me, One is called New York Dentists, I can't remember the other. I have yet to call. I am told they all speak great english though.

I hope it works out for you.
Navgirl 08-06-2008, 11:09 PM I should add that this is just for dependents. I think AD members have to stick with base medical and dental unless they need special care that can not be provided on base and have to be referred. We have that choice because the medical and dental slots have to go to AD members and then we can get the leftovers, LOL! I had to wait a month when I made an appointment to get a filling.
