View Full Version : self soothing question
Lilithdrff 12-27-2005, 12:32 PM Cadence has started sucking on her hand quite a bit. She does this when she's not hungry (I know because I often mistake it as a hunger sign, and when I try to feed her she gets ticked off).
She just turned 2 months old, and refuses a pacifier. Do you guys think this is her form of self-soothing? So far all our attempts to introduce a pacifier have ended up in the pacifier getting spit back up at us.
My mom said she may not like the pacifier, and may never take to it. I never had that issue with Katryvna (lord knows she won't let go of the stupid thing).
Any thoughts? should I just let her be, and let her suck on her hand until she finds her thumb, or should we continue to try and give her a pacifier?
IgglesmumX2 12-27-2005, 12:34 PM Bradley does the exact same thing. We have tried absolutely ever pacifier out there and he doesn't like them. He is quite content sucking on his hand so we let him. Yesterday he finally was able to get his thumb out and into his mouth (he's 3 1/2 months old).
Frankie Lee 12-27-2005, 12:36 PM I would let her suck on her hand, she will [probably stop soon anyway...that has been my experience anyway! If it doesn't stop before too long I would do something because it really messes up their teeth, I know!! After 6 grand in orthodontics for my 13 year old!
mara_jade81 12-27-2005, 12:36 PM madison wouldn't ever take a pacifier either and would want to suck on me and sometimes her hand. i would just let her be if she hates the pacifier. some kids just don't like it!
Lilithdrff 12-27-2005, 12:40 PM Well, at least she can't loose her hand, roflmao! and I don't have to go digging through a bag to get a binkie, on the freeway, with a kiddo crying. I am a little worried that she'll become a thumb-sucker, and screw her teeth later on in life though.

Ethan never took a pacifier either and doesn't suck his thumbs or fingers. He likes to chew on his lil teddy tho :hehe
Donna 12-27-2005, 02:17 PM Chris started out by sucking on his hand. he has been sucking on his thumb since he was about 4 months old. i tried and tried to get him to take a pacifer but he didnt want it. so now, he sucks on his thumb when he is going to sleep.
Caimbrie 12-27-2005, 04:23 PM I'd just let her be. Cameron used a paci for a few months then refused it and sucked on his hand.. now he doesn't use anything and he isn't even 13 months.
MichelleB 12-27-2005, 07:29 PM I guess it depends on whether you want to her to suck her thumb or the pacifer. Taylor wanted to be a thumb sucker so bad, but everything she would start sucking on her hand I would put the binkie in her mouth. Since she is still tiny you can be persistant with the pacifer if you want to be. It might get spit out at first, but if you keep giving it to her, she will eventually take it.
Sarah 12-27-2005, 07:54 PM I would just let her be. Emily never took the pacifier , but Noah did. The pacifier can screw up their teeth too.
Sounds like she's content with just using her hand ;)
RockstarMom 12-28-2005, 01:20 AM Aiden LOVED his binkie. Gwen sucked her hand until she was 3-4 months old. Then it stopped. She'll be fine. I'd just let her go. ;)
Heather 12-29-2005, 01:38 AM i agree with the just let it be's. my Lily is thumb sucker and always has been we tried the binkies but she just didn't like them. Shes almost three and sucks her thumb only when shes tired or watching tv with her blanket. most kids grow out of anyhow.
