View Full Version : USAA
sharonbury 08-19-2008, 12:39 AM I'm not just a customer of USAA, I am an employee.. and all the problems posted on this particular board.. USAA can help with... auto ins, homeowners, renters, free financial advice, life insurance, banking (they rebate atm fees and you can deposit checks from home simply by scanning the check into your computer), credit cards (and they reduce the rate to something like 4% while on deployment.. and without having to send them crap like enlistment papers)... just an fyi..I've worked there over 6 yrs and I'm pleased. The CEO is a Ret Army General who was the commander of the Big Red One at one time... take that Geico!
kellsies_mom 08-19-2008, 10:41 AM I thought you couldnt deposit checks by scanning unless you have a credit card with them? They wont let us do that cause they wont give us a card.
luvmysailor96 08-19-2008, 11:05 AM Yeah, you have to have a credit card to deposit checks. I dont have one with USAA so I cant deposit my checks at home and it sucks, but I still prefer USAA over any other bank. And I have had there insurance since I was 15 years old and Im about to turn 30 and I love them. I also had home owners insurance when we owned a house and now I have renters since we live in base housing. I would recommend them to anyone.
Brandi 08-19-2008, 11:07 AM Its so weird that so many people talk about having to have credit cards to use the home deposit. We don't have ANY lines of credit of any kind (no personal loans, no car loans, no credit cards) and we have always used the home deposit with no problems at all. The only time we couldn't use it was to deposit our income tax check b/c it was over the daily limit of $5,000. Other than that, we have used it often since it first became available and I absolutely LOOOOVE the convenience of it! (L)

They must have changed their policies, because I have called about 12 times, hoping I would get a different answer... :giggle They have told me everytime that I have to have some sort of line of credit, whether it be an auto loan, a credit card.. etc.. AND insurance through them.

Do you have any insurance policies with them?
Shaky 08-19-2008, 11:20 AM But if they did change the policy I would think Brandi would not even have the option to do it anymore :dunno
I don't know we are able to deposit from home but we have everything through them.

She told me that they would have grandfathered in the people who already had it.
Brandi 08-19-2008, 11:24 AM Yes, we do have two lines of insurance through them... auto and renters. Just not lines of credit. But we've been with them for YEARS now, so it's possible that we got grandfathered in since their policy changed. That would make sense b/c we've had the home deposit since they first came out with it. We banked with them for a really long time before they even offered that service. I am just SOOOOOOOOO glad that it's available b/c I HATED having to mail in the deposits. :lol
militaryprincess 08-19-2008, 11:25 AM I thought you couldnt deposit checks by scanning unless you have a credit card with them? They wont let us do that cause they wont give us a card.
:agree
ilovekale 08-19-2008, 11:33 AM i personally love USAA...we have two of our cars financed through them, as well as a credit card. i have never had a problem with them and the loan rate is great during deployment.
militaryprincess 08-19-2008, 11:34 AM i was dissappointed to find out after opening an account that i had to have the line of credit to use the deposit at home. i applied for a cc and they wouldn't give us one. my question is why didn't they make the requirements known from the start? that is what upset me. they sell it like everyone can use it.
Navgirl 08-19-2008, 11:40 AM We can't use D@H because we are overseas and also we had applied for a CC through them and they said we couldn't get one because we are overseas. Dh and I applied for separate CC's through Navy Fed and they approved and sent us CC's no problem overseas. So the being overseas part kind of irkes me because I specifically got USAA before moving overseas because my brother highly recommended them since he was in Germany.
I do plan on using USAA for our auto loan when we buy a car when we return to the states.
Meghann 08-19-2008, 11:50 AM We can't use the deposit at home either because we don't have any lines of credit with them and the manager I spoke to told me it was required to have something in order to use that feature. It is frustrating. I don't understand how some people are able to do it without any lines of credit but others aren't. :dunno Brandi's just special like that. :giggle :wink

That's so weird that they wont approve it cause you guys are overseas! :thinking
kellsies_mom 08-19-2008, 01:09 PM how long do you have to be with them to have the grandfathered thing? dh has been with them since 1995. we have all our insurance through them. we have a bank of america acct still active just in case we need to cash a check. i dont want to have to wait forever to send in a check to have it deposited. maybe once i get a job they will give me a credit card. dh cant get one cause of a bankruptcy in 02.
I don't have a credit card with them either and ever since I opened my own account seperate of ex-dh's I could use deposit at home. He never could do it from his account though.
AG2Wife 08-19-2008, 08:42 PM if you have an acct with USAA, why not just get a credit card (so you can make the deposits) and NOT use the credit card?? They approve almost anyone who has an account with them
J.Ski 08-20-2008, 01:48 AM I loooooove USAA. We don't use D@H because we use our local credit union for bill paying and our USAA checking accounts for spending money. Our car insurance is 1/3 of the quote GEICO gave us.:fu to GEICO!
ProudArmyWifeD 08-20-2008, 07:05 AM We don't have a credit card through them and can deposit checks at home with our scanner. And ps, we're overseas too.

Yeah... We're overseas and have no problems.
Jennifer 08-20-2008, 07:16 AM We can't get a CC through them because we are applying while overseas. It sucks that we are being screwed like that. If I'd known that before we opened the account, it would have made me think again. It's a hgue PITA to mail my checks stateside to get them deposited and takes forever.

That's so weird. My husband applied for a CC with them a couple months ago and we're in Germany. He didn't have any problems. Did you talk to them on the phone?

My husband did. Our mailing address and everything is overseas too, so who knows. We're not in need of another CC right now so we are just going to apply again when we get home.

That's strange. I don't know. They took both of our addresses, our APO and our German one (we live off base). I wonder why they let some people but not others.

No clue. Our account with them was brand new at the time too, that may have affected it as well. We've got excellent credit, so I know it is not that. We also like at an FPO, so that may affect it.

That could affect it. We have an APO but they allow us to have insurance and such. I know that we can't have a credit card because DF's credit is sh*t and I'm not eligible until our marital status is married. :) I can't wait to apply for credit with them because I could use the 12.99% that they usually offer.
ProudArmyWifeD 08-20-2008, 09:14 AM Well, we live in Germany, USAA has our German address and our APO.
We have a 529 savings account (for our daughter's college), two checking accts, and a savings acct through them, as well as our car insurance.
I use deposit at home, with no problems.

odd. my brother is a vet & has USAA- hes currently DoD in Germany - he applied for a CC & a mortgage recently - had no problems.
I'm sure since USAA has many people overseas, they can figure that out. Maybe the lady on the board that works for USAA can help you out with that.

Ive been told thier credit card is one of the hardest cards out there to get, to quilify for.:dunno I know they wouldnt approve us for one when we applied.

:thinking :dunno
we had a CC through them before we even had a checking or savings acct...
hopefully things can get figured out

Yeah... We're overseas and have no problems.
I think it's because we were already overseas plus not having a CC
That's so weird. My husband applied for a CC with them a couple months ago and we're in Germany. He didn't have any problems. Did you talk to them on the phone?
No, we tried applying online so that could have something to do with it but we applied for NFCU CC online and was approved within minutes and had our cards in 2 weeks. Oh well. We got the new CC's to get lower rates to pay off our debt. Then after getting new cards we found out about the balance transfer rate of 5.9% for the life of the loan and that was a BONUS. Our CC's are 10.9% and 7.9% for the regular APR.
But we do have auto insurance through USAA for our Korean hooptie and we pay $11 a month. CHEAP!
sharonbury 08-21-2008, 09:36 AM I dont work in the bank but I can go and ask for the fyi while I am @ work.
instant_oatmeal 08-21-2008, 11:05 AM Thats fine and dandy but I just did insurance quotes for our 2 cars and USAA was double the cost of geico. So...take that! ;)
sharonbury 08-21-2008, 12:22 PM does geico cover you if you pcs overseas? does geico have homeowners insurance, life insurance, banking....ha..no...one stop shopping but I understand the desire to go with the lower cost

gieco can cover you overseas, they also have renters insurance. They don't have banking, but some people prefer other banks/credit unions to USAA. USAA is not a perfect fit for everyone. I like USAA but if they couldn't give me the lowest price I would jump ship.
I got a credit card through them before we got checking/savings. I got a preapproval offer in the mail from them.

No clue about overseas but since its not an issue right now I don't care. I don't need homeowner's insurance but we do have their renter's insurance. I don't care if I have to have 5 different companies, if its cheaper thats where I'm going. :dunno
soldi3rs 4ng3l 08-22-2008, 03:09 PM I'm kinda spoiled with USAA..My dad as been an employee with USAA since I was 6 years old and I'm now 30..He's the one that had told me about insurance through them since I started driving..I've also had them for checking/savings as well..As far as depositing checks, I have mine direct deposited..Other checks we receive, we just send in the mail & have no problems with them being deposited in a timly matter..I will never drop any services I have through them & now I have the dh spoiled with them as well. :cp
I've never had a problem with USAA. They are always friendly and willing to help with ANYTHING. We have insurance, renters insurance, savings, checking. The vehicle insurance is the cheapest we have ever found. We use deposit at home with no problems (and we don't have credit cards with them) and we don't send checks in the mail because last time we did that it took a month for it to get from Illinois to Texas (that was due to the christmas season and the mail, not USAA)
goldilockz 08-28-2008, 01:12 PM I was depositing checks online well before I had a credit card with them.
They have fantastic customer service too. Go to them BEFORE deciding on what car you want, and they'll help.
goldilockz 08-28-2008, 01:13 PM The ONLY issue I had from USAA was trying to get a VA loan. They wouldn't approve a VA loan for a mortgage because my "job description" changed in the last 2 years. Other than that, no problems. I could still get a mortgage, just not VA... which really made no sense to me considering they are a military bank :dunno

What kind of loan? Conventional then? My only complaint is that they don't do FHA loans. Other than that, I am in LOVE with them! Every time I call they are so wonderful! (L)
petsparkle 08-28-2008, 01:17 PM I love USAA. I talked to them about the CC thing for home deposit and I was told you just have to be "approved" for a line of credit. You don't actually have to use it. So you could get approved for a car loan, or a credit card and then let it expire and never actually open it. That's what I was told about 6 weeks ago anyway.
The only thing I don't have with USAA is banking right now, but we're seriously considering it.
The only issue I've ever had with USAA is when we were in FL and had a renters policy and separate homeowners insurance for our home (that we put renters in). We had a minor claim from one of the hurricanes ($300 for contents of the fridge) which the lady said she would give us straight away (we thought our house was flattened but it turned out 2 weeks later that it was one of the few that was okay so we didn't need to put in a full claim). She knew we had a homeowners policy too because i had all the paper work with me. Well, 2.5 years later we moved back to WA and back into our house and converted the policy back to being a proper homeowners policy. Our rates skyrocketed because although the $300 claim doesn't affect renters policies, it does count as a claim on a homeowners policy. So when we converted it our rates went up $600. I was very unhappy, but thankfully it was only for 6 months, but that would have been really bad had we just put in that claim.
However, USAA has been great for everything else. And we had USAA overseas too.
NC@SEA 08-30-2008, 07:33 PM We have USAA and love them. We don't have a cc with them and we can stil deposit with them via scanner. Also, they have the absolute best customer service.
Elizabeth 08-30-2008, 07:53 PM That's so weird that they wont approve it cause you guys are overseas! :thinking
It drives me crazy! We can't open up anything new while overseas. We got our car loan through NFCU because of that.
amandalaine 09-02-2008, 08:14 PM I think the new homeowner's policy USAA has with the FL 2002 Retrofit standards WHATEVER thing is BS! The home we are buying is insured by them right now, but since it will be written up as a new policy and they haven't redone the roofs and bolted walls to the foundation, as of Aug 1, we can't get insured with USAA on the house.
OneBoyOneGirl 09-02-2008, 09:29 PM i have usaa for renters and car insurance thier rates are awesome excellent cust service! only prob i had they put the wrong bank account for direct deposit, fixed it easily and rebated the fees accured b/c of it.
