View Full Version : Navy "A" School
ShandyPierre 06-22-2006, 08:39 PM My husband is headed into the Navy, and I was wondering if after he is done with bootcamp and goes to his "A" School, will we be able to live together? or will we still have to be apart until he completes "A" School?
I think it might depend on what rate he is, what A school he's going to, etc. One of the more seasoned ladies on here probably can tell you! :)
BLBnJVB3 06-22-2006, 08:47 PM I'm not sure but he is going to be an AT, right? I can ask my hubby when he gets home. We weren't together when he went to A school. When John went through 2 of his schools since we have been married, CAST and some other one I can't remember for what, we didn't. I'm not sure if we were allowed to but the Navy wouldn't have paid for Breanna and I to move there since the one was just 6 weeks and the other 10 weeks long.
Nicole1788 06-22-2006, 09:15 PM I think it depends how long it is :shrug im not really sure mine was only in for like 3 weeks.
ValGal 06-22-2006, 09:21 PM K...I got the scoop! My hubby is an instructor at the Prototype at NWS Charleston. You CAN live together as long as you are married. He will still haveto wear his uniform all the time when he's not at school but you CAN live togther. If you're coming to Charleston there is no waiting list for housing as well :)
PS...my DH seems to think you can ONLY live in housing, that you won't be able to move off the base until after he's finished prototype.
Caimbrie 06-22-2006, 10:00 PM It depends on his A school if it's a short school then no but if it's a long school then because you are married you can :)
ValGal 06-22-2006, 10:11 PM OOOOOOh, ok, i was assuming your hubby was a nuc & going into a nuc A school. I'm not sure about any of the other A schools but if your hubby is going to nuc A school then the above answer applies,LOL

Yah my husband is a nuke so his A school was long and they went straight to proto type after that which was right there in SC too. I wasn't with him then though.
If your husband is an AT you "can" live together but depending on how long he is in A school (whether he is O level or I level) whether the Navy will pay to move you with him. Also, depending on the situation, the base CO has to approve him living off base. He will get BAH while in bootcamp and A school. So, if it's that important to you, then save the BAH money from boot camp and move down to Pensacola, FL with him. That is where AT school is. It's beautiful and a great place to make memories together. He will wear his uniform on base until he's allowed to wear civi's but that doesn't stop him from wearing civilian clothes off base. Good luck. I would just call NATTC on NAS Pensacola to find out their procedures. That is the school he will be going to in Pensacola. Maybe even contact family services for more information.
PrincessBlue505 06-22-2006, 10:47 PM If the school is longer than 6 months then the Navy will pay for you to move to be with him at the school. If it is shorter than that, then the move will come out of your pocket. If the school is shorter than 6 months, I believe they'll let you live together but he'll have to wear his uniform all the time and stuff and I believe he has to get special permission to do so but I'm not sure about this last sentence....
BigTexsGirl 06-23-2006, 11:21 AM hey. my husband just finished his A school in Pensacola, it was 6months long.he's an AT too i think. i was able to move down there, of course we paid for the move, which was no big deal. It's "recommended" that you don't move with him, too many distractions :P Once you're husband gets to PNS, he can request brown bagger status, which means he can live off base with you. I suggest you stay away from the apartments near the base... not the best neighborhoods, and the mall is like 30 minutes away.
instant_oatmeal 06-23-2006, 02:27 PM I could have moved to be with dh while he was at a school but they wouldn't pay for it. Plus Great Lakes was only 2 hours from home so I just drove down there all the time.
BLBnJVB3 06-23-2006, 02:32 PM Ok, I talked to my hubby and he said you can move with him and live with him while he is there. I'm not sure how long the school is now, when John went it was 8 months. If it is shorter than 6 months then the Navy won't pay for you to move with him and you'll be getting BAH for the area you are getting it for now. If it is longer than 6 months then the Navy will pay for you to move and you can get BAH for the new area.

Hey, my brother is going to school there right now. I wonder if my brother was in his class? That'd be funny....
