:woohoo this means my dad can be a member now. :woot

here is the article
USAA has long been working toward serving the entire military community. Since our founding in 1922, we've expanded eligibility as we've grown our financial strength and built the operational capacity to accommodate additional groups of members. Today, USAA is stronger than at any time in our 86-year history, which enables us to offer the benefits of USAA membership to more military families than ever before.
I am very pleased to announce that USAA is opening membership to include the following:

Military retirees who served honorably, regardless of when they retired
Military personnel honorably discharged on or after Jan. 1, 1996
Widows and widowers of military members killed in action while eligible

After they join, spouses and children of the above may also be eligible to enjoy the benefits of membership.
And, USAA membership (https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=become_member_eligibility&offerName=2008_08_Email_CEO_Membership) remains open to active-duty servicemembers, National Guard, Selected Reserve, and officer candidates, as well as members' spouses and children.
Having served as an Army Private and many ranks along the way to Major General, it gives me great personal satisfaction to know that another 3 million former servicemembers and their families now have access to all that USAA offers. Traditional public companies gauge success by profits and tend to grow by acquisition. USAA is here for no other reason than to help facilitate the financial security of military families. It’s more than a mission statement. We care about our members and their families.
If you are serving or have served, or are part of a military family, I invite you to discover the benefits of USAA membership (https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=become_member_eligibility&offerName=2008_08_Email_CEO_Discover_Membership) and see if you are eligible.

Our association was founded by military for military and is among the most highly regarded financial service providers. Especially in today's turbulent economy, we're proud that more military families can depend on USAA to be a safe harbor.

Sincerely,

YES! :D I just chatted with USAA a few months ago 'cos I want renters insurance.... But, since stupid (kidding, I :wub him) DB won't marry me, and my dad was medically retired in the 60s, it wasn't gonna happen.

Now I gotta go tell my daddy to sign his butt up!

If she had USAA before she retired then it would carry over.
Back in the day USAA used to be for Officers only, like when my dad was in. So he was never eligble and they didn't open membership up to retirees you had to be active when you joined or join within 3 months of discharge or something like that.
