View Full Version : Star Jones-Reynolds fires back at ABC
Becca 06-30-2006, 08:09 AM Is it just me, or was ABC giving her the opportunity to go gracefully?? What a way to blow it.
Ok Star, you can go now.
Reynolds: ABC Said to 'Make Up a Story'

NEW YORK - Ousted cast member Star Jones Reynolds said Thursday she was told she could "make up a story" about why she was leaving "The View" and her colleagues would have gone along with it.
The news that Reynolds wouldn't have her contract renewed for a 10th year on the daytime talk show exploded this week into a bitter war of words involving show creator Barbara Walters.
Reynolds, appearing Thursday on CNN's "Larry King Live," said she'd been told in April that she wasn't coming back but kept it secret. She revealed it on Tuesday's show, taking Walters and ABC by surprise with the timing.
The truth _ that Reynolds' ABC bosses didn't want her back because her personal popularity was plummeting _ might never have been known without the fight.
"They said you can make up a story," Reynolds said. "The audience didn't deserve for me to make up a story. That's not fair."
Longtime ABC newswoman Walters has confirmed the intended deception, but said it was done to protect Reynolds' reputation and feelings.
ABC said it canned Reynolds immediately after Tuesday's show because her announcement, and an interview with People magazine, took the network by surprise. Walters told The Associated Press that she felt betrayed and ABC said it couldn't trust Reynolds to tell the truth if she remained on the air.
Reynolds said she was "having trouble reconciling" ABC's statement with being told earlier that she could lie about her exit.
cyndilou 06-30-2006, 08:13 AM She was on the "Today Show" today too. I just feel like she is really trying to hid something. Something was said about the show was upset because she would not be honest about her weight loss. Does anybody know how she dropped so much weight?
Becca 06-30-2006, 08:18 AM They let her go because her popularity went south, and quickly. I'm sure that had something to do with the fact that she wouldn't come clean about her weight loss. I could speculate on how she lost the weight - but I won't, because I don't have any facts. I WILL however say that if she did it the old fashioned way, she wouldn't be ashamed to admit it.
:dunno Personally I could really care less. I just think her fans were disappointed when she refused to share her methods.
Kaymara 06-30-2006, 08:41 AM From CNN.com
Reynolds' departure closely follows Meredith Vieira leaving the show for NBC's "Today" show. Vieira will be replaced by comedian Rosie O'Donnell, and rumors have circulated that the Reynolds was not thrilled by the addition of O'Donnell. The comedian has criticized Reynolds' 100-pound weight loss, alleging she had gastric bypass surgery.
On Thursday, Reynolds said she did, in fact, have "medical intervention" for her weight and that O'Donnell had misinterpreted how she had lost the weight.
Becca 06-30-2006, 08:44 AM Too bad she'd already lost so much of her fan base, you know?
caligirlnjapan 06-30-2006, 08:45 AM I thought she had gystro-bypass, and if so what's the crime in that? It helped Ricky Lake & the Wilson chick's career out! Unless she did Trim-Spa (baby) or starved herself why hide your secrets?
I'm glad she's gone and think with this news and her behavior her "popularity" is only going to plumit even further...wouldn't be surprised if in a few years she'll be on one of VH1's "Where are they Now" or "The Surreal Life" :giggle
PS: the Trim-Spa thing is more of a joke about Anna Nicole than being their spokesperson, btw, nothing against the product...
Becca 06-30-2006, 08:47 AM I don't think anyone particularly cared HOW she lost the weight - the problem was that she wasn't willing to share whatever method with her fans. There were people that looked up to her (believe it or not :giggle), and it came across like "See how successful I am?? But I'm not going to tell you how I did it."
ETA: Of course the FANS cared how, that was my point, but when I said "I don't think anyone particularly cared..." I was referring to her critics ;) Sorry to confuse.
Ms_Rogerthat 06-30-2006, 08:53 AM I am SO glad she's gone....I can NOT stand her:pukey

The weight loss thing is part of why Rosie has issues with her.
kathy 06-30-2006, 09:22 AM I dont think you can go 9 years proclaming almost every day that your proud of your body and you love yourself then loose a bunch of weight and become silent about how you did it..why you did it and expect people to just accept it and move on:yes
CoffeeGirl 06-30-2006, 09:46 AM I am SO glad she's gone....I can NOT stand her:pukey
:yes :thumbsup :yes

:yes Me too! I have higher respect for people like Oprah, Ricky Lake, and Tracy Gold...and so many others who come out and talk about their stuggles & their accomplishments with their fans & the public. Sure it's a private thing...I know that for DARN sure...but when you're in the public eye like that - you have a fan base who looks up to you. You have someone sitting at home who is obese watching you every day losing weight wondering "How's she doing it? Maybe I can do it too!" Who knows...oh well...sayonara to her though...I'm not missing her on the show. Everytime I watched it, it seemed more like the Joy & Star debate show...

Right - it just goes to show that they're real people.
iLuvKev 06-30-2006, 10:09 AM she doesnt look heathly and her personality is not there anymore. i can understand why. whenever someone in hollywood makes a drastic change it either really helps or drops them like a bad habit! i persanly dont like her skinny.
Diamond 06-30-2006, 11:03 AM I actually don't care for her....and NOT over the weight loss thing.....that I could care less about....
I don't care for her because when she was getting married she was requesting sponsors for her wedding. Various companies provided her with FREE things because she was on the VIEW mentioning the companies.
To me that was pathetic.....here she and her husband make damn good money and you are out there BEGGING...........HELL NO
sdshorty 06-30-2006, 11:11 AM God! I'm so sick of Star Jones!!
Amber V 06-30-2006, 11:12 AM I have never really watched the show. But I really thought she was quite a piece of work to say weight loss is personal and I am not telling how I lost my weight. While it is personal there are not that many different ways to do it. I have always thought she had by pass.
Caimbrie 06-30-2006, 11:40 AM I actually don't care for her....and NOT over the weight loss thing.....that I could care less about....

That pissed me off when she did that crap.
Aundi 06-30-2006, 11:43 AM As much as I didn't agree with her at times and sometimes didn't share the same opinion as her, she was part of what made the View a good show to watch. Who wants a show where it's all people you like:P
I'm watching a pre-recorded episode and can't believe they sat and talked about what's it feel like to "get fired" in front of her in hot topics. You could tell that she looked absolutely miserable! That was just BEYOND tacky! I've had issues with Star Jones in the past but have a LOT of respect for the fact that she came forward and was honest with the viewers! Barbara Walters actually suggested that she should have looked for something else, once she knew her contract wasn't going to be renewed and leave with dignity. I'm glad Star was honest! If anything I've lost A LOT of respect for Barbara Walters and intend to write to her and tell her so:yes I don't believe that she didn't have the final decision on a show she created in the first place.......can we say lying :rolleyes
I am an obese person and have never cared once that she didn't share how she lost weight. she always said a medical intervention was used. The people who need that much details from a tv personality need help, and not from gastric bypass:tired
i dont think i have seen the show so i think i know who you all are talking about , but like everyone else why should it matter how she lost the weight but why does she feel the need to hide it.
oh on a side note i dont really like Barbara Walters either.
Aundi 06-30-2006, 11:52 AM Oh yeah and Barbara Walters told Larry King that they had planned an hour long tribute show for Star, to allow her to go out appreciated.
Now if you were Star Jones would you really want to sit through an hour long show like that knowing the whole time that you are being forced to leave. I would have left how she did, rather than play some game with the audience. I feel it was so tacky for them not to think of how that would be for her to sit through:(
That was really mean of them to do that to her. the network was trying to make her lie about why she was leaving and trying to be underhanded about. that in itself is just wrong. they should have just let her tell the truth as it really was and i guess she did. i bet that show will either lose viewers or unless most people are glad star jones is gone. since i never watch the show since i work and i dont know star jones personally it doesnt affect me but its the way they went about doing that was wrong in my opinion.
luvmysailor2001 06-30-2006, 12:34 PM I have never cared for Star Jones overall but she did bring a unique "view" to The View. Unless they have someone really good pegged to take her spot (I'm sure they do since they've known they were going to not bring her back) that show is going to go down hill. The whole ideas was that there were 4 distinct points of view plus BW. Mededith was the mother, gave the family side of things often, then you always have the younger girl representing the newer generation side of things, Star was the legal "experienced" view I guess you could say and then Joy was the comedian. Now you have Joy and Rosie who will pretty much have the same "view" as far as the comedic side of things. They may be brining Rosie in for the homosexual viewers but honestly I think Meredith will take alot of "The View" viewers to NBC with her when she goes.
I think what "The View" and ABC did to Star was tacky. To fire someone and says "tell whatever story you want" but sit here and deal with it is just tacky and very unprofessional IMO.
I could care less why the weight loss issue. Apparently she had reasons for not wanting to share the details. Maybe ABC wanted to make a big deal of out if...you know follow her thru the process, surgery, etc. and she didn't want to do that (I don't know that, just speculation on my part) She has the right to do something like that in privacy.
Aundi 06-30-2006, 12:48 PM I can't believe that some people (not anyone here) feel she HAD to share that information just because she was in the public eye. If people haven't noticed society is not too friendly when it comes to the morbidly obese. Maybe she didn't want a circus act made out of something so emotional and painful. She had EVERY right to not say a damn thing! I can't believe people feel let down over that of all things!
Also after what she said on Larry king last night, I don't have a lot of respect left for Rosie anymore either......and I've always loved Rosie :yes
sunshyne 06-30-2006, 12:51 PM I didn't see the larry king show, what was said that made you lose respect for Rosie?
Amber V 06-30-2006, 12:57 PM The one show I watched with Star after losing weight rubbed me raw. To me it was like, "I lost all of this weight and I look great and I am hiding things". I felt like she was being very tacky about how she put things out there. And I imagine that is how other people who view the show regularly felt as well. Again I do not really get to watch those shows in the morning.

LKL will be reairing the Star Jones interview on Monday.
Also there is a clip available (about 6 minutes long) online.
Aundi 06-30-2006, 01:57 PM The jist was this and I have not done ANY checking of facts so i'm only going on Star's side. She said that she and rosie had always been friends and that they had even worked on some projects together, so she was really saddened by the fact that Rosie started talking about her and her family in a mean way.
I have lost respect for Rosie because wasn't it Rosie that kept her being gay a secret, except to those closest to her. The ONLY reason Rosie ever came out was to be an advocate for adoption rights for gay parents. Seems there are personal things in life that we may not feel the whole world needs to know, even Rosie:yes Yet she treats Star like that because she did the same thing :rolleyes
Callie 07-01-2006, 01:28 PM I am SO glad she's gone....I can NOT stand her:pukey
Ditto!!! I have never been able to stand her!!!! maybe now I will watch the show. Is that mean?
