How do you feel about taking normal names and changing the spellings to something more unique?
I ask because the girls name we have picked out is Emily Jade but I want to call her "Emma" So, I came up with a variations of "Emily" that I really like what do ya'll think? Am I off my rocker here?!? :lol
Emmaleigh Jayde H*ll
I really like it. . . I haven't ran it passed Joshua yet but he loves unique names. If we have "another" girl other than Emmaleigh he wants to name her Fayte *Fate*
And if we have a boy we are naming him Alexander Daniel but thats pretty cut and dry :P

I knew a girl named Emma Lee, as her first name. I love the way you have spelt it, but this is another option. I am the same way. I don't want a plain jane name.. it has to have a little uniqueness to it. Makes it special.

I probably be out of the norm on this but I don't spelling variations on names. I also am one to not like nicknames and such. I am not against anybody that has a unique name/nickname or people that do that their children. Don't flame me it's just my opinion.

I think uniqueness is great, but I don't like names that are going to cause people to dread trying to pronounce it correctly. Unique spellings, as long as it isn't TOO confusing, are okay. I took Jackson and made it Jaxon because I didn't want him to always be known as "Jack" and I knew that would happen if we left the "jack" in his name. Shelby's middle name is Karalin which is a nontraditional way of spelling Carolyn, but I spelled it that way to honor my mother and Jason's mother since the name is a mixture of both. People may ask her how to spell her middle name and Jaxon may have to spell his out to people also, but people have trouble spelling even the most common names like kristi or christy or christi or anne or ann or rachael or rachel or even things like Renee. So, it's just one of those things that some people will have to live with. It'd be a pretty boring world if everyone used very common names with only one spelling just for the sake of making things easy. :D I say give the name a little flare and uniqueness, but don't go too overboard.

I think EmmaLeigh is pretty but I can't say I'm a fan of Fayte.

Unique names are great but definatly dont go overboard. ANd keep in mind (from someone who grew up with a unique spelling to her name (Kristene) ) It SUCKED not being able to buy pens, pencils, cups etc that had names personalized on them. I remember crying to my parents about that alot because I would really want one but could only ever find Kristine or Kristen...

I have to agree. I think a little variation is one thing, but I think people go a little overboard sometimes.

I think the different spellings are ok but not the over the top ones. My best friend named her girls Hailie and Rielei (Riley). I think most people will get Hailies name when they read it but not Rielies. Rieleis middle name is Danielle but its spelled differently too. I like the names that you know what they are. Emmaleigh is cute

The one thing that kinda sucks about giving your kids an "original or unique" name is that you can never find their names on personalized stuff.. Even with my daughter, Camryn, (which is a popular name right now) nobody stocks things with her name on them. We find tons of things with Cameron on them which could be a boy or a girl's name.. Some souvenir places offer items that you can have personalized while you wait, so it's not always so bad.. We're going to have to customize Camryn's license plates for her bike and things like that.

We went traditional and named Camryn after my great grandmother. Her name was Mae, so Camryn's middle name is Mae.

For those of you who can't find the personalized things, I have seen TONS and TONS of VERY cute things on ebay that are really super affordable and these people do wonderful jobs with personalization... everything from toothbrushes to wall plaques to name plates for bikes, stationary, pencils, you name it. A long time ago they didn't have that kind of stuff but now the options are endless! So, I don't think that should be a factor at all!

As long as you when you see the name you can still pronounce it. Do remember though that even though Emmaleigh is cute and pretty looking, it might be hard for her to write out once she get's to Kindergarten.

The original spelling for Ashtin's name is Ashton. But Ashton is Pron. ASH-TIN or ASH-TEN.

Unless the spelling is so far out there you can't figure it out...I think it is creative. Had I named my daughter Brianna, it would've been Briauna.

Thats true. And back then when I was a kid you COULD find places to do it special. But it was kinda a let down going to disneyland, or knotts berry farm, or wherever and seeing the neat stuff there and never finding my name

Tell me about it! My name is spelled Ericka and everyone spells it with either a "c" or a "k" but never "ck". Now I'm running into that problem with Bri's name because I spelled it with only one n.

Walter wanted Gabe's name to be unique. So while i was out of hit, he did the birth cert paper. well, i didnt even notice till he was 4 weeks old!!! he spelled it Gabreil instead of Gabriel. talk about a hassle!!! Gabe has 2 sets of medical records!! one with each spelling.

Josh took one look at it and says...
Why would you want her name to be (I KID YOU NOT... )
EMMA LAY ? :freakout
I was like "ITS LEE YOU DOOF!!! :duh Thats the way alot of girls spell Lee so they are different than a guys spelling" He was like... Ooooo :loser
Never got an answer outah that one.
I just like the feminine version of the spelling of Lee...
I guess Emmalee works too though or something like that works too! ;)
My Mom loves it cause she wanted to name me Emma "JO" After my PawPaw who passed away before I was born but Dad liked freeking Cori :refuse
I would have been Southern to a "T" with that name, hair, and Southern drawl I sport! :lmao

I was going to name my daughter Emma Leigh but with Leigh as the middle name. I love that name! We ended up naming her Ericka which is kind of a unique spelling of Erica. There's no real reason why we spell it that way except we couldn't decide on whether to spell it with a c or a k so we did both :)

Thats fine when you give someone a unique spelling but dont get upset when people cant spell the name right. I have to say that is one thing that drives me insane is people (im talking in general) give their kids crazy names and then complain that people never spell them right. I dont have a weird spelled name but a different name: Lara (not LaUra there is no U in my name) and people can never get it right.

I like unique spellings, but i don't like making names longer. we made our girl's name shorter. rhiannon is the traditional spelling, rhianen is how we spell it. no one can say or spell it. oh well. :D

i like original names & i don't like common names..

my name is alyson.. my name has one L & one Y in it and whenever i go to souvenier shops to find my name labeled on something like ornaments for example they won't have that spelling there.. they will have.. ALLISON, ALISON & ALLYSON..
rarely will they carry my spelling of my name & that kinda bugged me.

We have Bayleigh Elizabeth and Kaytlynn Mae. I thought bailey spelling looked tooooo boyish for me.

And Kaytlynn===was because I thought caitlin--looked too much like a cat lin--So DH made it so she could go by Kayt.

We like nicknames--my opnion, I think it works if it works for you, I agree with Kristi it was really hard at first buying things for the boys--(both have common spelling and names, but like Brandi said things have changed.

I like the name EmmaLee very cute.

Kaitlyn's middle name is Ashleigh, but that's as far as I went. Now Kaitlyn is way too common, but I didn't know that when she was born. I prefer original over common.

I'm like orginal over common, I've always said if I have a little girl I'm going to take the name Mckenzie and spell is Macynzi. I don't know if I'll actually do it when the time comes b/c i know people will mess up the pronunciation of it but as of right nows its my first choice

I like original... but I don't know how much I'd want to give my future child a totally crazy name that would get him/her made fun of.... zoe's middle name is "leigh" and ppl get it wrong allll the time.... i personally like shorter, cute names that are easy for kids to spell. hell, zoe has been able to spell her name since 18 months :)

Cori, just heads up, but I have really long name. I have 2 letters more than the alphabet. :screwy and doing school registration cards each year was a real biotch. I hate filling out paper work that require my legal name. Seriously, those that know my full name know what I am talking about. Just keep in mind that your child will be writing his/her name for the rest of their lives. So if you are going to give him/her a long name I can guarantee they are going to go with a nick name to make it easier.

But don't get me wrong. I love what each name in my name stands for, it's just sucks writing it all out. ;)

(that's why I don't mind people knowing me on here as Joy Morris, because Joy Morris won't get you crap if you are really lookin for me. :giggle)

I changed the spelling of my dd name her name is Adalyna Renay(Adalina)But we call her Addy most days. But I wanted the spelling to be unique. My dad put a Y in my first name and changed a letter in my middle name(Aymber Elisabeth) ,so I thought I would carry on the tradition. If we had another dd we would have named her Rebekah Lynne or Anne (and called her Bekah). My ds is original though cause he is a Jr.

I like unique names. I have a unique name and everyone in the class knew who the sub teachers came to my name:giggle My mom bought me personalized stuff through Lillian Vernon. You can get anything they make personalized. My kids all have unique names as well. Doesn't bother me when it's pornounced wrong, just correct it. Even people with common names have them mispronounced at times.
