when someone sends you a gift, what are the little icons next to it for? I think one was a red X and another one an eye or something.

The eye means it is visible to other members. When you buy a gift, you have the option to set it as a private gift that only you and the person you send it to can view it. The X is how you would delete a gift if you wanted to delete one :)
