View Full Version : Cloth diapers and diaper rashes...
PrincessBlue505 07-10-2006, 11:32 PM Ok, DD has VERY sensitive skin. Like Pampers wipes are all too rough and make her red and rashy as soon as they touch her skin, and after a while she developed a sensitivity to Huggies Naturals so I had to switch to Huggies Sensitive. She gets rashy very easy when she has certain types of bowl movements (pretty much as soon as it touches her skin), and once she starts a rash, it gets bad very quickly especially if she has more than one of those types of bowl movements the day the rash starts (like BM's from too much fruit or too acidy food). I alternate rash ointments (Boudreaux's butt paste, A&D oinment, Desitin) until I find what works best on that particular rash (it varies depending on the rash).
I also try to let her air out as much as possible but she usually pees on stuff (my poor couch usually..lol). This rash she has now, she had 3 of those types of bowel movements today within a few hours of eachother that started the rash and then turned it into the worst one she's ever had. It's VERY angry and red with raised bumps-poor thing, and it's painful for her too. Especially with this rash, I'd like to let her air out more often without getting pee all over the place.
So my questions are:
Are cloth diapers good for airing out diaper rashes? Or do cloth diapers make rashes worse and it's better to let them be "free?" If you've used regular diapers before, which do you find makes rashes worse the most: cloth or regular? Anyone else have any diaper rash advice?
RockstarMom 07-10-2006, 11:46 PM I know that my parents used cloth on us because we were very rashy kids, but disposables were very different back then. I plan on using cloth with the new baby. Do you have a fenced in yard she can run around naked in? We did that with our kids when they had rashes like that. They seem to get worse in the summertime. :( I hope you can find an answer!

Yes. That's a GREAT idea! She doesn't walk yet and doesn't like the feel of the prickly grass on her hands/feet/knees, but we have a blanket I don't care about that she could pee all over....I'm going to do this tomorrow. Thanks!
RockstarMom 07-10-2006, 11:54 PM Your welcome. :) We have been fortunate enough to have yards they can be naked in! Also, they are kids, so who cares if they are running around naked!
Oh and Aveno Oatmeal baths-they work well also. ;)
Debra 07-11-2006, 12:09 AM I used 'sposies with my DS. With DD we used 'sposies briefly before switching to cloth. She too was very rashy & had super sensitive skin...until we switched to cloth. After that, I think in 2 years she maybe had 2 rashes. We also used cloth wipes with her a lot, which helped.
I would definately do cloth!
PrincessBlue505 07-11-2006, 12:32 AM How do cloth wipes work?
Scarlett 07-11-2006, 10:01 AM i do cloth and my son has never had a rash.
the cloth wipes i put in a old wipe box with water and a squirt of baby wash. after i use them I roll them up in the cloth diapers and wash all together.
if you are serious about cloth let me know. I have a ton of knowledge and info, links ect.
MelissaMc424 07-11-2006, 10:06 AM My DD had a horrible diaper rash after a bout of the stomach virus. Her's actually bled, so I took her to the dr. He recommended letting her air out and stay naked as much as possible, and she spent 3 days alternating between naked and wearing cotton panties. (keep your steam cleaner handy..LOL) We also spent over a week applying hydrocortisone cream& antifungal cream mixed together and then a layer of A&D over top of that to her diaper area.
Dr. also recommended using baby wash cloths and water to clean her diaper area when I changed her.. that helped a ton.
Cornstarch or oatmeal baths soothe the burning, and Dr. said it was fine to do this once a day.
Amber V 07-11-2006, 10:11 AM I have found that for really bad rashes using a cornstarch baby powder was the best. I did not have to touch the area and aggrivate it more and it would start to clear up after about 2 diaper changes. Good luck.
*Dawn* 07-11-2006, 10:26 AM Aarons Dr. had me use Lanolin on his behind because it heals quickly. I get my lanolin at Wal-Mart and now they have come up with Lanolin Wipes and I love that. I would of never thought of using Lanolin on his rash because I used it on my nipples during breast feeding, but it works better on rashes than anything else I have tried so I don't use anything else anymore.

I used lanolin on my babies butt too. I think it works better than rash cream.
Also I use cloth too. My ds also has bowel issues, due to lactose problems and other foods just not agreeing with him. The cloth does help. Cloth is nice because you will change them more often. I never used cloth wipes, but you can easily do it. There are so many cloth diapers out there. www.diaperpin.com is a great place for reviews and stuff. There is tons of info out there.

the best stuff ever! You can get it at walmart. I think Jaxon only ever had maybe one or two rashes which were after a stomach virus and Shelby hasn't ever had one. It worked like a CHARM though. Cleared it up in less than 2 days. We've always used disposables and haven't ever had any problems with them. I just change frequently and use the extra soft pampers wipes. They are like silk!
Traci 07-11-2006, 10:47 PM Do your own cloth wipes. That and A&D ointment worked well. It's a pain in the ass but having them go around naked is one of the best things you can do for a rash.
trevsnavywife 07-11-2006, 10:55 PM I'm pro Lanolin too!!! And letting them run free. Also one doc told me to let her soak in a warm tub and then dry her off really well and let her run free for like 30 min...

I let her do that this afternoon in the living room since it was raining all day today so I couldn't take her in the backyard like I'd wanted. DD peed on the floor like 3 times, peed on the couch twice, and poo'd twice. The second time we didn't see her poo, DH looked at her and she had a hand full of poo! lol She must've poo'd on the floor and then picked it up. She squished it in her hands and everything. lol After that, DH made me put a diaper back on her. lol
I really think we'll start doing cloth diapers, at least when she has a rash anyway. I'm a little nervous because of all the work it seems to clean them, and I hate doing laundry-always put it off until the last minute. Until I get some though, I think I'll do some cloth wipes to help her out.....

I have that paste and it's doing nothing for this particular rash. Also, Pampers wipes r too rough for her. This seems to be a tie between A&D/Desitin responsive rash, although neither of them are making it better fast enough. I'm trying the lanolin tomorrow. I'd given away all the tubes except one since I stopped breast feeding, and the only reason I had this one is I kept forgetting to give it away. I wish I knew about it being good for rashes before I'd given all those other tubes away-that stuff is kind of expensive!
trevsnavywife 07-12-2006, 01:13 AM Ok, I know little in the pediatric department...but if nothing is kicking this rash and you've tried alot...it might be a yeast infection...I know so sad to imagine your little one with that...but it's possible.
I once had someone tell me to try equal parts of Desitin (any diaper rash cream should work) Mylanta and Vasaline...It sounds strange, but if you mix it make a paste it suppose to be the best diaper rash stuff ever...
But if nothing is clearing it up, and she has what might look like pimples and she screams if you chang her...I would call peds and get her in...If it's Yeast no amount of trying will help you if she needs something stronger.
Good luck.
*Dawn* 07-12-2006, 03:10 AM Hope the lanolin works Nessa...let us know..it works wonders on Aar
Caimbrie 07-12-2006, 09:30 AM Cameron is the SAME way. He egts rashes all the time. i tried cloth diapers and for him it didn't make a difference I just use sensitive skin EVERYTHING for him. When he has a red raw rash I use Desitine and then powder on it and it seams to really help.
Traci 07-12-2006, 11:50 AM How old is your DD? If she is young enough maybe you can put her in the crib or playpen so you can contain the mess. A small amount of water in the tub and letting her play in it may work to.

:agree
It could be a yeast infection. Gwen had one and it looked scaley. I used Monistat on it and it went away quickly after that.

I've had to do Monistat for Cameron twice and it cleared it right up as well.

The Buttpaste didn't work on my daughter.. neither did the Johnson and Johnson 3 in 1... What worked best when she was an infant was Dr. Smith's... it's awesome!! Every child is different, and sometimes trial and error is the only way. Now I use A& D original on her and it's working wonderfully!

Is your son lactose intolerant? I am, and I take a supplement available at Walmart, and they have a children's version. It's put out by a company named Ganeden Biotech. Their website is http://www.ganedenbiotech.com (http://ganedenbiotech.com). They also have supplements for IBS and other gastro-intestional problems.

My mom is an ER nurse and told me during DD's last rash that if it gets really bad I should try Mylanta on it, but I completely forgot about it until you just mentioned it.
I'll remember the Monistat and the possibility of yeast infection for further rashes.
The Lanolin is working WONDERS on this rash-the rash is almost gone having used the lanolin all day today (and that's even with more acidy poos today that increased irritation but quickly went away with the lanolin). I have it on my list to buy the lanolin wipes for future rashes.
RockstarMom 07-12-2006, 10:36 PM I'm glad she's doing better! :D
trevsnavywife 07-12-2006, 10:55 PM I'm glad we could be of help...that is what's awesome about mom's forums, we all have crazy ideas and sometimes they work!!!
PrincessBlue505 07-12-2006, 11:51 PM I think I'd be going nuts right now if it hadn't been for a lot of these ideas. And DD would still be in a LOT of pain. I'd probably be taking her to the dr. tomorrow if I hadn't had these ideas to try/that worked....Thanks so much everyone! And DD thanks u too! :)
Brooke 07-12-2006, 11:54 PM I ALWAYS use cloths! I love them. just run them in warm water and wipe them and it feels great for them and your not leaving a residue on them!
