I have no clue if I could find this info out somewhere or not... I decided this was the best place to check first!!!
Does anyone know how to figure out what tax would be on an SRB of $60g?
Christopher will be deployed to a tax free zone, somewhere round his reenlistment, but no schedule is exact as you all know... so the reenlistment might be done at Sig where it would be taxed. I'm just curious! It just went up, lil excited, great jumpstart to a future house, and a new car for us.
They raised it I guess trying to attract future and retain EOD techs... so on that note, anyone's hub want to be EOD? :D Mine might be home a lil more if they ever get some new guys!

Ok, this is what we found out when DH got his SRB back in '01. Unless he re-enlists in a tax free area, your SRB can be taxed up to 33%. You do get a portion of that tax back when you file your Federal Income taxes. (On another note, if he's deployed to a tax free area and is receiving tax free pay, he'll still have to pay tax on the SRB installments, because the initial SRB was issued in a taxable area.)
You'll get 1/2 of the SRB upfront, (after taxes) and then the rest is paid out over the next few years (depending on how long he re-enlists for).. DH re-enlisted for 6, so ours was paid over 5.
Don't be surprised if he re-enlists before the end of the fiscal year if y'all have a little extra in the bank account one day.. We were shocked and couldn't figure it out.. (even thought they screwed up on his SRB) We got the yearly installment before we got the big lump sum payment.

Dh was interested in EOD. They were recruiting for it when he was in HI. He doesn't have security clearance so he can't even start the process. He is working on getting his security clearnace and going to SWCC. I'm happier with that, even if they don't get big SRB's. That way he can train where we live.

Thanks Melissa!!! That's a lot of tax. He would be reenlisting for 4 years... does it take long after reenlistment to receive the funds?
Yeah, training near your home is great! I can't say I would recommend EOD to people with children already. They lead a crazy busy lifestyle; that would change though if there were more techs... not quite sure how it's ever going to change really.

The SRB usually comes no later than a couple weeks after the ceremony. It's usually in by the next payday. There have been quite a few put off until the beginning of the fiscal year because the Navy's run out of money before... I hope yours comes in soon after he signs that contract! DH's re-enlisting for 6 more years next year... I wish they'd let him sign for the full 8 that he has left but they'll only let ya sign on for 6 at a time..

Thanks! Lil clearer now! This is her first reenlistment after serving 4 years, and they will always be for 4 years so he can hit all 3 zones (?) and get 3 bonuses. I dunno, I try to understand but sometimes I just say ok!

No problem, I had some ????s about it all when DH re-enlisted... he'd already been through it once, so he knew all about it and walked me through.
I'm always happy to help when I can!
Hope it turns out the way you want Elizabeth! :hugs
