I dont know what he is gonna do. He is trying so hard to get himself into shape so he can pass all these monthly PRT's and then the one in November and he has been working out almost every day during the week and then twice a week his friend is helping him try to do his run and to increase his speed and time. He keeps having problems. first his breathing is not good when he runs and then today he said his shins were hurting. so i told him he might have to consider doing the swim if he cant pass this run. i told him he needs to talk to a professional trainer.

can anyone give me some advice for what he can do that is into running. he is 41 years old.

I am not into running...my husband did just come off recruiting duty, so he was always helping guys get into shape, and for himself, he would just practice running a mile or two a week and maybe one workout a week. If he over exercises...especially the day or two before, he might not have as much energy for the test. As far as his shins..that might have something to do with his shoes...Brent can only run in certain types of shoes and they have to be made a certain way or his knees feels like it is going to bust on him. So, he wears a shoe that is best for him and a knee brace. As far as the breathing, my husband has tried to teach me, I think that is something some of us never learn....I can't figure out how to breath and run right, at the same time. I can't do it.

I hope your husband figures out what works best for him, those PRT test are very important for their career, and like you said, the swimming test may be better for him. But I agree, if he is having that much trouble, then he should talk to a professional trainer, he may not be doing the right workouts...even though he is working hard...maybe they aren't the best workouts for his needs...

I hope he gets it all worked out...I know those test are important and mean alot.

Well he just bought a new pair of shoes and he does wear a knee brace because he had knee surgery last year. he said his knees werent bothering him but his shins were this time. i hadnt thought about the shoes that might be it. he is also flat footed to so i dont think that helps either.

Sorry, I don't really have any advice but my db is/has been having problems with his PRT's too so I feel your pain there. He has bad knees and he sort of suffers through it I guess. I just wanted to send :goodvibes your way. I hope he can get through it. Has he seen a doctor since the surgery?

well my hubby said he checked with the trainer at the base gym and he told him that it was normal cause he is trying to make his body do things its not used to yet. and he also told him his shoes were fine. so he just has to keep going and not quit.

I was about to tell you that that sounded like shin splints, and the only thing to do for them is make sure that you are warmed up properly before trying to run. They aren't anything to worry about. Just make sure he gets a lot of water after his runs to rinse out the lactic acid that is building in his muscles when he runs. As he exercises more and more, the muscles will stretch and the shin splints will go away.

You will also get bad shin splints if your stride is not long enough. If he slows his pace a bit and lengthens his stride it might help. I know my husband had issues with shin splints last year during transition because he had to shorten his stride so much to run in formation.

Does he have shin splints? They're very common and the best treatment is alternating heat/ice in 30 min. intervals. There's also a way to tape his lower legs to help support them. I hope he's feeling better. Maybe he should make an appointment with one of the trainers there at the gym on the base.
