The bond between mother and child is the first relationship that human beings form, making it fundamental to all aspects of the individual's future growth and development. Essential as it is, the bond can be threatened by a variety of emotional conditions which can beset either party, from colic in the newborn infant to postpartum depression in the mother. Now, according to a study published in the Archives of Diseases in Childhood, some researchers think that the two conditions may be linked. The study, conducted by researchers at Turkey's Marmara University, concludes that mothers with postpartum depression are more likely to have infants who suffer from colic. Researchers also found that the combination of postpartum depression in the mother and a colicky baby can deeply hinder the formation of strong bonds between the two.
